I got a lovely surprise at work today. :) Michelle was at the reception desk and all of sudden I hear "Sandy, could you please come out here for a minute?"... and with the tone of her voice I thought I was going to get in shit for something, so my mind is racing trying to figure out what I could have done wrong...but then I walked out, and there was a flower delivery man :)
So, I take the flowers, and Donna & Floyd come out of their offices to see, and I open up the card, and get a very confused look on my face when the card says "Congratulations - it's a boy!" and just has "Hi =)" written on it. They were trying to figure out if it was some inside joke...and then I got teased all afternoon for knocking him up haha...but yeah, it was very sweet :) he's certainly impressed the other girls in the office =oP
and that reminded me that I never wrote about Valentines day. Yeah, we didn't do anything exciting. We ordered some Chinese food, wanted to watch "Dirty Dancing" (okay *I* did lol) but then I couldn't find the damn DVD (the time before we went to watch it, we couldn't find the DVD remote, and there is no play on the front of the DVD player, crappy thing!) so, that sort of sucked. We finally watched it last night though, I love that movie :)
anyways, but I did get Valentines presents at work! when I walked in, there was a little teddy bear with a heart on him & some hershey's kisses sitting on my desk from Michelle. She got Donna a plant, but the poor thing died on the way to the office hehe, we tried to revive it all day, but it was toast! and then one of the painters came in & gave me a thing of ferraro rochers mmmm
so yes, that's it I think.

well, this is a massive gift to me - i've just looked at this week's tute work, a series of thermodynamics questions. trivial, trivial, trivial, all but one which i can look up a formula for easily anyway! just what i needed :D
note: no, this doesn't happen often. usually it takes a fair bit of reading and srawling on rough paper to hammer something out.

Wahey, my essay on Tom Paine is finished! I'm well fucking chuffed with it too... I'm not normally a fan of my own essays right after writing them, so I hope this bodes well (no, I don't reckon I've "jinxed" myself). The only thing that annoys me is that right as I was editing the essay and referencing the last few quotes, I found the title to a book which was JUST what I needed and JUST what I had to do without... fuck! But the essay was slightly over the maximum word count (+10% of 2000 words - essay was 2250 excluding footnotes and bibliography) so I've decided just to leave it... pfeh. Hopefully this is first standard stuff. I need to up my average (fuckin' first year... cue more ranting on guntrip's journal about students, haha).
Anyway. I'll post it to hollowwords as soon as anyone apart from lightisfading comments on EITHER of the LAST TWO ENTRIES which I posted AGES ago and have mentioned here at least THREE times in the hope that SOMEONE out of the 25-odd people who SPECIFICALLY ASKED to be able TO read my STUFF might ACTUALLY evenTUALLY YUNno just MAYBE respond to IT. Hahahaha. You bastards. In case you haven't gotten the subtle hint, this means that it would be neat if you went to the journal itself, because nothing else is going to appear on anyone's friendlist so long as I'm sulking about this, hahaha. lightisfading is a star and the rest of you are all tossers, you tossers!
Anyway, time to start work on that dissertation plan... but first... macaroni cheese for dinner and perhaps some relaxation blowing the shit out of things on Quake.
Fuck dance, let's art, woo woo!

Universities face week of protest UK universities are being hit by a week of disruption, as academic staff strike over pay and students hold further protests against top-up fees. (link)
So, some students are on strike. Someone care to point out the difference in output between striking students and normal students?
See, I'd have move sympathy for the strikers and be more opposed to University fees if I knew more than one student who actually made an effort to attend all their classes, and didn't just seem to view them as an obstacle to sleeping in late..

So. 12.30am Sunday morning there was a powercut or according to my flatmate "It's a sign from God telling you to go offline and sleep, Rachel."
Well. I slept after we saw the fire engines and went "oooh fire engines"
I have no idea if my net connection in my room is working as I left before 9am this morning and of course... no one was going to fix it yesterday.
No matter. I'll just move into the Comp Sci building if it comes to it.
I am so tired. I don't know what I did yesterday to make my legs ache so much today.
Anyway, helped paint Matt's election banners and then went to Mass at SFH.
Bishop Sentamu is a very interesting guy.
I still ache. This thought is almost as overriding as the "I am hungry" one. Hmm.
Got a trim. I will be able to hold off on the hacking at my hair with scissors so it looks like ( the guy from the human league's hair )
Next on the agenda... somehow find time to dye it.
I am so busy. This is crazy. How the hell did I get so busy? It's not as if I actually search out things to do. Tonight... Cathsoc committee changeover dinner... as my last lecture finishes at oh... 7pm I don't think I'll be much help with any of this cooking business. Perhaps I could... set the table or something. Tomorrow... tell Debbie about publicity stuff. Wednesday... Sci-fi at lunchtime has been replaced with going to Mass but Sci-fi in the evening has not. Because you know... going to Mass at lunchtime instead of in the evening. Cunning isn't it. Thursday... I'm sure there's something I am supposed to do but I've just forgotten what it is. Hmmm. Thursday yes. Mentor Pancake night.
Friday... I might possibly be able to not do anything...except no. I am going to some Youth Forum thing with Emily. ACK.
I guess this is a good time to leave a note for all you MESPT folk: I am uber busy this week and therefore... if you catch me online and need me for anything right then and there I might be able to do it, but chances are... you won't catch me online.
Also. Matt, tell me when you need me to help you with campaigning stuff. because yeah. need to know sooner rather than later or I will become busy when you need help.

i've had quite a productive morning, so far - considering i didn't get back from caving party until 4 yesterday, when all the kebab vans had packed up, i'm pretty pleased. one question sheet finished, and my room now looks messy, as opposed to a horrific dump. i have a load of handouts on my bed to file away, and possibly even read through and try to remember what the lecture was about. they're actually coving an entire bed, to the depth of about 10 sheets. eeek, i really have been slack this term!
there's plenty still to get through, but i'm not procrastinating, which is the main thing :)

Delirious on the telly |
] |
Jess and I went to Lago di Como last night with Lindsay. I had a really good night, I was so glad it wasn't weird - a distinct possibility whenever you're meeting 'internet people' in real life. Turns out, Lindsay is really cool and nice, so it was all good.
This morning Jessy and I went and got some videos, and went to the Subiaco markets. We got pretty much all the fruit and veges we need for the week for about $25, plus some cool stuff like fresh rocket and some kaffir lime leaves. Tonight I'm going to cook a rocket risotto; if it turns out nice I'll post a recipe.
Now Jessy is watching Eddie Murphy: Delirious, and we're relaxing for the afternoon. Any Perth people who want to come for a visit, please do... just message me on 0421 461 475.

Quiz Questions |
[21 Feb 2004|08:28pm] |
Ok so I'm making a quiz. The questions go from easy to hard its sort of a survivor style quiz with many rounds. It has 3 sections one is pop culture the second is on ani difranco, the third is on a game that i'm guessing not many of you play. The quiz is aimed to range from no ani exposure to fans, so the easier question will be basic and easy to find. Politics and sexual orientation must be excluded from the questions. Anyone have any suggestions for good questions (I need help on the ani related ones, but if you have some good pop cultures ones post them too)?

*giggles* only one more thing, and I quote:
"John Cage was always critical of bad performances of his work, and 4'33" was no exception."
*giggles more* it's from a website about the piece. it's a silent piece, if you didn't know. *strokes beard* or... not silent... but noteless! or somesuch. hehe. anyway, it has three movements, and you have to get them right. heheheh.

*whimpers* I just finished marguerite duras' blue eyes, black hair. in an evening! *whimpers more* it's... emotionally weighty. wa! pip said 'intense' and he was right. I also finished 'the bloody chamber' by lovely ms carter this morning which was all super and nice. in a somewhat twisted way. hehe. next up is 'the planetarium' by nathailie sarraute, I think.. whee! I hardly know anything about her but I found it in my mum's french books collection and it looks interesting. we shall see! but possibly not tonight, as I might.. um.. go to bed now. hehe I'm so feeble! bah! I'm also listening to elgar's cello concerto. BUT I'M NOT ENJOYING IT VERY MUCH! no! well, it's ok.
in fact apart from the aforementioned female novelist (not duras or sarraute), benjamin britten, david mackenzie [1] and a handful of supergreat noise bands (jesus and mary chain... yumyum), british culture is just about the worst in the world. teeeheehee! well, that might be a trifle harsh. or if not harsh then at least, more than I can justly claim with my knowledge at the moment, but still!! in philosophy (political or otherwise), in literature, orrrr in really interesting music, what have britons actually contributed to the grand stock of our species' culture? :) little more than a lot of mediocre pleasantries, I say. MUAHAHA!
so there's also wuthering heights and graham greene and herbert read and clockwork orange. hm. ;) but while I'm in hyper-pretension mode anyway: can you imagine an experience remotely equivalent to reading ionesco whilst listening to boulez's second piano sonata relying exclusively on artists from these fair shores? ;) I THINK YOU CAN NOT. this is why france wins. oh yes.
of course, this isn't to say that boulez's piano sonatas don't sound just like my piano playing after getting sick of practicing grade 1 peices and going 'rar rar rar' whilst hitting keys at random (though not where rhythm is concerned), because they do, but then maybe his making a career out of that is precisely the root of his genius. ;) heeeeeeheeeeee.
mm. atonal. john cage's 'suite for toy piano' is almost as good as 4'33"..... hehehehe... I wish I'd thought of it first though. teeee.
ok, I suck. but, you know, it's not my fault if I happen to be really interested in the sorts of things that as a rule only intolerably arrogant people want to discuss :P just pretend I'm talking about football technique, if it bothers you. or cars, or horrendous bbc comedies, or WHEE it's anna! :D say hello anna. 'hello anaa ha ha ha oops i spelt my name wrong. i suck'. awwwww! I love anna. hehe! she came in to see me when I was being antisocial. well, I still am, kind of, in fact, I'm still writing on livejournal while she's here, but hey! I'm sure you see what I mean. hehe she says she doesn't care. right! byebye people. hehe she and shiv are going running tomorrow. shiv aches, apparently. her sides ache! yes. *waves and smiles* tarah!
[1] AND young adam was dissapointing. if worth it for the custard, still. heehee. *pang of heart-ache* last great wilderness was so gorgeous though! sigh. :)
