Battleground Ohio
If there was any doubt about the importance of Ohio in this year’s presidential race I think yesterday’s Bush rally here in Columbus erased it. After all, the campaign wouldn’t make Columbus the final stop before Bush’s acceptance speech unless Ohio was a high priority.

No, after visiting the state three times in eight days (23 times in total this year)and with more visits lined up later this week, it is clear Ohio is going to be a serious battleground, if not the battleground, for the next sixty days. As they say, read on . . .

iTunes And The RNC
With approximately 80% market share, Apple Computer's iTunes Music Store is consistently rated the best online music store. Plus, you can use it with the iPod.

Performing a public service, Apple is offering, free of charge, downloads of the speeches from this weeks Republican National Convention. You can keep them on your computer, burn them to CD, or download them to your iPod.

You can download a free copy of iTunes here. Once you install the program, go to the Music Store and click on the Republican National Convention link.

For those of you looking to punish yourselves in some sick way, the Democratic National Convention speeches are also available.

Fear And Loathing At The RNC
I am no pollster, but I was interested in what my undecided friends – I have a few – thought of last night’s convention. This pool of undecideds are all leaning towards John Kerry because they are ready for a change and have had various opinions about George Bush, all of which were unfavorable. Based on my twenty conversations, by phone, email, and in person, I think the anti-Zell Miller pundits are wrong. Zell had one hell of an impact.

Florida looks good for a Senator Martinez
Martinez won by a suprisingly large margin yesterday, beating former Rep. Bill McCollum by 45-31 percent, with the rest going to other candidates. I'm optimistic about Secretary Martinez's chances for a variety of reasons. Which are below. Print This Story

The Swift Boat Attack Pays Off
Last week when the Swift Boat ads became major news I advanced the theory that the entire Swift Boat campaign was in fact a strategic assault designed to evoke a response.  I argued that while yes it was a well planned attack on one of the cornerstones of the Kerry campaign, the primary goal of the attack was to provoke John Kerry into saying or doing something detrimental to his own efforts.  I argued that in essence, by responding to the Swifties in the way he did, Kerry was charging headlong into a trap.  Today it appears as though the battle is won and the desired effects have all been achieved.

  • Kerry's standing with Veterans has gone down dramatically.
  • His Vietnam service is no longer an effective inoculant against `weak on defense' attacks.
  • A non-trivial portion of the electorate now doubts his honesty about his service.
  • The public has been duly reminded of Kerry's anti-war activities.
  • The President has gained a slight lead in the polls going into his convention, thus giving his campaign the initiative, and maximizing the possible positive impact of the convention itself on his polling numbers.

And now the piece-de-resistance, the desired response: The Kerry campaign has overreacted to the assault and committed a gross strategic error by reorganizing his campaign staff at the start of the last leg of the race.

Hope Comes To The GOP
He started out as mayor of Young Harris, Georgia. At least that was Zell Miller's elected beginning. He was actually shaped in the North Georgia mountains, where Georgia reaches up to heaven and feels the breath of God. Those mountains breed men of character through hard work and, when Senator Miller was growing up, in poor conditions.

Thune Pulls Ahead

The excellent Daschle v. Thune blog has the results of a NRSC poll showing John Thune pulling ahead of Tom Daschle. The poll of 500 likely South Dakota voters shows Thune leading Daschle 50% to 48%, with a MOE of 4.4%.

And meanwhile, Daschle is running an ad showing him hugging President Bush and showing how much he supports the President. Naturally, the far-left base that's support Daschle should be livid - we'll see how this effects his Hamptons fundraisers.

Thune has a ways to go against the slippery incumbant, but Daschle is in the race for his life, and if anyone can end the reign of the Lizard King of the Senate, John Thune is the man to do it.

UPDATE: And don't miss jannelson's link-filled roundup on the Daschle v. Thune race.

A Rush for Bush
The president had a great interview with the leading radio personality. He is, as everyone knows, a subpar public speaker, and he oftens struggles in hostile question-and-answer settings. But, whenever he talks to sympathizers, he usually excels -- perhaps even more than other politicians do. Today was no different.... Print This Story

Heel of the Hunt: The final days of Florida's GOP Senate Primary
Today, the long strange race comes to an end as voters head to the polls. Here's a look at the tumlutuous final days of the Republican primary campaign for Florida's U.S. Senate Seat in which a newspaper withdrew its endorsement, the Governor asked for a television ad to be pulled, and the long-time leader in the polls appeared to fall to second. "A Nation of Courage"
I watched Senator McCain and Rudy Giuliani address the RNC. What a great first night. It is important that McCain endorse President Bush, especially because McCain was Kerry's first choice for Kerry's running mate. McCain's speech was good. He reminded us the stakes in the war against terror: Print This Story

Waitasecond. Whatabout Bill?
(Crossposted to Obsidian Wings)

That was my rather belated reaction to the secondhand recounting of whatever it was that Mary Anne Marsh said last week on Hannity and Colmes. I say secondhand because I originally got it from Jeff Goldstein: for that matter, the show hasn't posted a transcript. Jay Nordlinger noted it later on: no transcript there, either, so for all I know there's a context* issue.

Florida remains a must-win state for President Bush, and two weeks ago I said that Florida was trending for Kerry.

I'm pleased to report that no longer appears to be the case.

What McCain Giveth, McCain Taketh Away

Opponents of the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth are fond of quoting John McCain's disapproval of the ads questioning John Kerry's medals. I've said before and I'll say again that I am fully prepared to give Kerry the benefit of the doubt on his service--especially because I think that plans for the future matter more than actions of the past, especially when those actions were undertaken by people in their 20s.

There is another aspect of Kerry's youthful record that the Swift Boat veterans have attacked, however--Kerry's antiwar protests upon coming home from Vietnam. And here, it appears that John McCain is an ally of the Swift Boat veterans.

Martinez pulls even, sorta, in Florida
Tuesday is the Florida primary, and in the Republican contest for the soon-to-be-vacant Senate seat, former HUD Secretary and Bush paladin Mel Martinez has staged a late run to pull into a statistical tie with former congressman Bill McCollum. But many are undecided, and things are turning ugly.

Ach, things are always turning ugly in the prism through which the media view campaigns. And now that I look at it, how in the world could the St. Petersburg Times and Miami Herald commission a poll with a 5.7 percent margin of error? What were they thinking?

Sun Tzu At Work?
A great maneuver in politics and war is to surprise your opponent by appearing to attack on one front and, once the opponent has turned his attention to that front, surprise him by launching the major and planned assault on the newly weakened front.

See e.g. the opening scene in Gladiator and the maneuvering outside the Black Gate in "Return of the King."
