Blogger Bowl Update

Last week, the Highlanders won their first game of the season to move to a 1-3-0 record.

This week we face off against the unbeaten Fire Ants, managed by King of Fools.

Let's hope my record will continue to improve, but it is always hard going against an undefeated opponent. We will give it 110%, and the Good Lord willing, we will come out on top. We just have to take it one day at a time. (hat tip to the movie Bull Durham)

Man Planning on "Going Jihad" Arrested

From Yahoo News:

Federal authorities arrested an Iraqi-born man on illegal weapons charges during a sting operation prompted by the man's alleged threat about jihad.

Ahmed Hassan Al-Uqaily, 33, allegedly paid $1,000 for two disassembled machine guns, four disassembled hand grenades and hundreds of rounds of ammunition supplied by an undercover agent working with the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force, authorities said Friday.

The investigation began in August after an acquaintance of Al-Uqaily told federal authorities Al-Uqaily wanted to buy weapons. The affadavit said Al-Uqaily told the informant he was angry about the state of affairs in Iraq, was "going jihad" and planned to blow up something.

During conversations with the informant, Al-Uqaily "expressed animosity towards the Jewish community" and discussed "two Jewish facilities in the Nashville area," but made no specific threats, according to a release from the Justice Department.

Phishing Could Land You In Jail

From CNN:

It would add penalties of up to five years in prison for people convicted of installing such programs without a computer user's permission.

The bill, known as the "Internet Spyware Prevention Act," passed 415-0. It would give the Justice Department $10 million to crack down on companies and others that secretly install spyware and those who attempt to trick victims into disclosing personal details and financial information in e-mail scams popularly known as "phishing."

Offenders under the bill would be sentenced for up to five years for secretly installing spyware to break into someone's computer and commiting another federal crime.

The House on Tuesday voted 399-1 to pass the "Spy Act," sponsored by Rep. Mary Bono, R-California, which would add hefty civil penalties over the use of spyware.

al-Sadr Agrees to a Semi-Ceasefire Maybe

From Namibian World News:

Followers of renegade Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr have agreed a cease-fire with Iraq's interim government aimed at ending weeks of fighting in the vast Baghdad slum of Sadr City, a mediator said yesterday.

However, key members of the cleric's movement insisted terms of the deal had not been finalised.

Under Tuesday's plan, militia fighters loyal to the influential cleric would turn in their weapons in exchange for cash payments and immunity from prosecution for most of his followers, al-Bakhatti said.

Iraqi police would take over security responsibilities in Sadr City and American forces would only enter the district with the approval of Iraqi authorities, he said.

Landsford Canal

Landsford Canal

I took another hiking trip, this time to Landsford Canal. I took some pictures as I walked along and uploaded them here.

For those of you that are history buffs, here is a little information on Landsford Canal:

Landsford Canal, the best preserved of numerous 19th-century South Carolina river canals, has remnants of all its major structural features. It is the uppermost of four canals constructed on the Catawba Wateree river system during the period 1820-1835. Boats used the canals to bypass the rapids while carrying goods to and from the coast.

The 250-acre park includes the remnants of 1820 canal-culverts, stone bridges, locks, historic mill site and a lockkeeper's house which contains interpretive exhibits about the canal system in South Carolina.

The rocky shoals on the Catawba River are home to one of the world's largest populations of rocky shoals spider lilies. The spider lily can best be seen in full bloom in May. The shoals also provide excellent fishing opportunities for striped bass and bream.

Janet Leigh Dies at 77

Janet Leigh

Janet Leigh, the wholesome beauty whose shocking murder in the classic Alfred Hitchcock thriller "Psycho" was credited with making generations of film fans think twice about stepping into a motel room shower, has died. She was 77.

The stunning blonde enjoyed a long and distinguished career, appearing in such films as the 1962 political thriller "The Manchurian Candidate" and in Orson Welles' 1958 film noir classic "Touch of Evil."

But she gained her most lasting fame in "Psycho" as the embezzling office worker who is stabbed to death in the shower by cross-dressing madman Anthony Perkins. The role earned her an Oscar nomination as best supporting actress.

She often said she hadn't been able to take a shower since the movie. "It's not a hype, not something I thought would be good for publicity," she insisted. "Honest to gosh, it's true."
