4:30 am - feeble mind o' mine ...
i'd obviously forgotten that i HAD previously reproduced a Degas painting. but it was in acrylics. happens to be one of my favorite repro's too [i no longer have it, but [info]cattchan does]:

The Bath

the original, in pastels

2:15 am - the dancers [update progression]

colors are a bit off. i'll have to wait till it dries a little more before i do more work on it. everything becomes muddy if i add much more color.

10:53 pm - edgar degas ...
... has always been one of my favorite painters. i've never tried reproducing any of his work, though, but i did learn a lot from visually studying his pieces. his work is balanced in complex ways, it's fascinating. i wrote a report on his piece entitled "the four dancers" in my art appreciation class. one of these days, i'll post it. but for now, i decided i'd try my hand at reproducing a portion of that piece. [a portion, because i don't have the gigantic canvas i'd rather work with in which he used for his piece. so here are the beginnings of three of the four dancers. not doing justice to degas at all:

7:43 pm - nike [update]
i filled in all the spaces that needed filling. now i've begun filling in the background in vandyke brown. it's at a very awkward stage at the moment and i don't have pix of that part yet. considering adding some drabbish green just to counteract all the red hues.

1:40 pm - nike ...
i haven't felt this excited about a painting in a while. i really like this one. takes a lot for me to say that. could be the size, could be the energy or the colors. i don't know. it's just nifty. i tried updating this morning at 5:00, but lj was on the blitz.

2:26 am - it's proving to be "interesting" ....
the black oil stick ... i like it. but, needs getting used to. goes on very pastel like. filling in the areas with wet oil colors is tricky, as the black lines tend to smudge. so i took to just filling in as close to the line as possible, then going over and smudging the two together with a brush. the effect is lush, i really like it. it's just quite different than what i'm used to. .... )

this is pretty large [24" x 48"]. just sketched this out. let's see how the oil stick handles these lines. i'm sure it'll be thinned down quite a bit [i.e. not as much detail]... )

4:31 pm - acrylic application ....
i applied the acrylic base colors last night. this gives me an idea of color preparation. these broad colors will be covered in oil, hopefully with better results, more refined, etc.

12:43 am - in the works ...
my fascination with women in men's suits has always existed. when i first saw this photo of frida kahlo, i felt the my hangups regarding my conventional upbringing fall by the wayside. here was my hero ... in drag:

and this was one of her paintings that i felt so drawn to:

which i reproduced with my tablet:

ever intrigued by that painting of hers, so powerful, especiall with its scrawl at the top in spanish, i find it haunting me, calling me to take it to another dimemsion in homage of this fascinating woman . . . .  )
