It appears from looking at my server logs that the venerable
University of Houston finally got good internet connections in
the dorms. (Well, probably years ago, but I only now have evidence...)
In my day, we didn't need broadband connections coming into our rooms...
We dialed in with 2400 baud modems, and we liked it! We loved it...

Wow, I'm taking a look at the
stats, and it looks like there have been quite a few people watching
the show. That's
pretty cool. For the month to today, Show 5 has been viewed 13 times,
Show 3 has been
viewed 8 times, Show 2 viewed 10 times, and Shows
4 and 1 around
6 times. And over 230 Megabytes of pure comedy have been sent this
month. Hooray. |

David Lynch is making a new

I've never heard of coin-operated lights at an outdoor tennis court,
but what the heck... $0.50 for 30 minutes of extra tennis in the evening
will be nice tonight. Don't we get daylight savings time next week?
Steve Martin is cool.

Yesterday, John Phillips of
The Mamas And The Papas
died of heart failure.
My parents had a couple of their CD's, and I always did like their
music. |

Ow ow ow... I thought the light exercise would help my injury, but
it did not. I'm such a wuss.
A couple of nights ago, I had a dream that I was at work and received
a memo stating that all employees would be required to keep a list
of their top ten favorite bands posted under their names on the outside
of their cubicles. I don't remember what I picked for mine, but as
I walked around the office, I noticed that every single cube's list
started with:
1. TMBG
2. ...
3. ...
I don't know why, but it was somewhat unsettling. |

It's
a sad state when you're happy about weighing 264 pounds, but it is
a new low since I've been weighing myself. I played tennis today.
I'm not entirely sure what injury I sustained on Tuesday... I was
hoping that it was just a bruise of some sort and maybe some motion
would do it some good. It didn't work, unfortunately. The tennis matches
went poorly for me, but at least I got in another day's worth. However,
there is an extremely sore spot just above my Pyloric
Stenosis scar that seems to be worse since the game today. I'm
going to lay off until Saturday, but it'll be a nice full day of racquet
sports then. |

No racquetball or tennis today as my racquet-swinging arm hurts just
driving my car. One day off isn't going to kill me, but be prepared
for a nice spike on the weight chart. I'm looking forward to it. I'm
playing tomorrow definitely.
I have a tendency to talk about music a lot on this site. Usually
just Big
Smith, but I've mentioned Radiohead
and the Steve
Kimock Band on here several times as well.
I wasn't cool enough to like a lot of bands when I was young. I didn't
really get into Jane's Addiction until after they were broken up.
(I did catch their little reunion tour, though.) Another band that
I was never cool enough to like is Camper
Van Beethoven. Though I never really got into them, after that
band's demise I did really get into Cracker.
Teen Angst (What The World Needs Now) from their first self-titled
album got a lot of play on the
radio station I used to listen to in California. I snatched up
that album and used to listen to it often.
When their second album Kerosene
Hat came out, I purchased it as well. Low and Get Off This got
a fair amount of radio play as well. That remains an all-around good
album.
1996 brought The
Golden Age, and these guys just kept improving. The title track
of this album is amazing and the rest of it is great as well. One
of my favorites is "How Can I Live Without You" (chorus:
How can I live without you... When that means I've gotta get a job.)
When I first left Houston for Arkansas, I really didn't know what
to expect. I was surprised my second week in town to see that Cracker
was playing at a club in Fayetteville. It was a great show at a small
club.
After a while, I lost my copy of Kerosene Hat. While heading over
to grab a new copy, I noticed that they had a new album, 1999's Gentleman's
Blues. This CD is firmly in my road trip library, and it usually
gets a listen at least once a week. The guys seem truly happy to be
recording, and seem to be really enjoy this music, and it shows. On
"My Life Is Totally Boring Without You", Lowery sings "So
we started a band, owe it all to our fans, went somewhere near the
top..."
Well, Cracker is back in the studio right now working on a new album
for a possible summer release. I'm looking forward to new music from
this consistently good band. I'd say that these guys remain one of
the most underappreciated bands around today, and the tracks from
the new album that they've posted on their
website sound like the new album will once again not be a disappointment.

Played
Tennis and Racquetball again today. Lost a game of tennis, lost two
games of racquetball, but not nearly as badly as I lost on Sunday.
I've decided to make the weight
chart a normal feature. I'll try to keep it at least as updated
as I keep the rest of the site updated... The cigarettes will make
it onto the chart soon, I hope. The windows machine is having severe
problems, so still no webcam.
When I was playing racquetball earlier today, I twisted my knee and
I ran into a wall. The knee feels fine, but the entire right side
of my body hurts now. I think I'm taking the day off from tennis and
racquetball tomorrow. As my father told me, "The wall doesn't
give."
I also got a good start on my Telephone
Advertising Hall of Shame. I know there are more, but I'll get
to them soon enough.
I own this
poster, but I haven't hung it up because I can't ever seem to
get around to getting a frame for it. That would be much less funny
if it wasn't entirely true. I've had it for three full months now.

Won both of my games of tennis yesterday. I've apparently dropped
around ten pounds or so in the last month. Don't believe me? Check
the chart.
I hope to add to that chart soon the number of cigarettes I smoke
every day. See you all at Big
Smith at Chester's in Fayetteville tonight. |

Well,
I now know two people in Kansas City. (Three, actually...) A good
friend of mine from school in Arkansas just moved up here after tiring
of work for flaky dot-coms in San Francisco. He and his fiancee just
moved in last Saturday. I think the best thing about the whole situation
is that he actually has me on a fairly regular exercise schedule.
We've been playing tennis fairly often, and we'll be switching over
to raquetball soon. God knows I can use the exercise. It's nice to
have someone around so we can keep each other on track. I haven't
won a game yet, but I've given him a run for his money every time.
Guess I need to quit
smoking now. Anyone else who wants to play tennis or raquetball
in the Kansas City area, email
me...
Just what the hell is this?
Big Smith
in Fayetteville this weekend. Two nights at Chester's. See you there.
Also, I'll be getting my tickets for the Steve
Kimock Band at Chester's in May. Be sure to get your tickets soon.
The New Orleans show sold out in a couple hours.
In other music news, I just got an email from Jambase,
and a band called The
New Deal is going to be in Lawrence, KS next tuesday. It sounds
interesting, and I'm thinking about going. I am broke, though. I'm
listening to some mp3s from their site now. On the pro side, the music
sounds decent. On the con side, they're Canadian.
We'll see how I'm doing for money. I've been spending too much lately.
I'm not entirely sure why, but I've always liked the song 88
Lines About 44 Women by The
Nails. |

There is nothing more odious than telephone commercials. Long distance,
collect service it's all the same. On principle, I have to hate anyone
who lets themselves drop so low as to do a telephone commercial. Chris
Rock hurt. He was a good guy. It was painful to see him pimp himself
out for the promise of hundreds of thousands of dollars. Dennis Miller
hurt worse. I had (and to a lesser extent, still do) a lot of respect
for that man. He seemed intelligent. His talk show is the only one
I've seen that can get into a conversation about the existence and
nature of God with guests. It pained me to no end to see him doing
commercials for 1-900-Collect or whoever he endorsed. But what just
happened has crushed my soul.
I just received a call from a good friend. I thank this friend for
having the guts to call me and prepare me for what I was about to
endure. I haven't seen the commercial yet, but apparently, my idol
Mr.
T is doing commercials for 1-800 COLLECT. I've been saying I'm
going to do it for a while, but I haven't yet. I think it's time for
the Telephone Advertisement Hall of Shame. Please email
me with your stories of disappointment in your stars who have
sunk to the level of doing Telephone commercials. I shall compile
the stories and put them up here whenever I get around to it.
I now refer to Gimp Gimpson's Guide to Web Page Design Rule #321:
Don't update your web page when you're drunk.
I'm going out now to drown my sorrows in Scotch and a band that apparently
plays a lot of Dave Matthews Band covers. Have a good night, y'all. |
