03:28 pm - LJ make a wish I saw this on mizemm's LJ. Neat idea, I thought, so hear it be. Step One Make a post (public, friendslocked, filtered... whatever you're comfortable with) to your LJ. The post should contain your list of 10 holiday wishes. The wishes can be anything at all, from simple and fandom-related ("I'd love a Snape/Hermione icon that's just for me") to medium ("I wish for _____ on DVD") to really big ("All I want for Christmas is a new car/computer/house/TV.") The important thing is, make sure these wishes are things you really, truly want.
Also, make sure you post some version of these guidelines in your LJ so that the holiday joy will spread.
Step Two Surf around your friendslist (or friendsfriends, or just random journals) to see who has posted their list. And now here's the important part:
If you see a wish you can grant, and it's in your heart to do so, make someone's wish come true. Sometimes someone's trash is another's treasure, and if you have a leather jacket you don't want or a gift certificate you won't use--or even know where you could get someone's dream purebred Basset Hound for free--do it.
You needn't spend money on these wishes unless you want to. The point isn't to put people out, it's to provide everyone a chance to be someone else's holiday elf (or fairy) -- to spread the joy. Gifts can be made anonymously or not -- it's your call.
There are no rules with this project, no guarantees, and no strings attached. Just...wish, and it might come true. Give, and you might receive. And you'll have the joy of knowing you made someone's holiday special. ( Read more... ) Current Mood: content

03:44 pm - damiana_swan is a witch! If you know me, you probably realize that saying "damiana_swan is a witch!" is highly complimentary. I think of her as the modern version of what embodies witchitudinousness. Of course that is a word, be quiet. She is able to move in many, many different social circles. She is concerned with the healing and welfare of others, whether she can help by judicious application of herbs, by listening or by snuggling someone senseless. Other important witchy qualities she has are motherliness, a sex-positive attitude and introspection. She also cares about the planet and the puny humans on it as a macrocosm.
She is well known for Having a Spine (tm). She is musical and creative in a variety of ways and irresistably hug-worthy.
That is all. :)

03:20 pm - whirlwind of sensuality I met the luscious sirenscry in 1999. The universe brought us together in a time of Great Change for all of us. I'd like to think we were all good supports for each other during the universe's high stakes poker tournament, at whcih we were fellow blue chips. She is as inquisitive as she is dynamic. She’s a whirlwind of sensuality, that is the best summary of her I can give. In fact, if I hacked her LJ user info I would change her name to Whirlwind of Sensuality. :)
sirenscry is always challenging herself to be better, stronger, smarter. I admire the way she reaches out for new ideas and mastery of new frontiers. She is the embodiment of what it means to be open-minded. Even though she is already a really cool chick, she doesn’t rest on her laurels. She seems to be always journeying forward. I am so glad to know her, and pleased to have dragged her on to LJ.

10:58 am - tylik Renaissance Woman! I don't know tylik that well, but I know enough to think "Wow". In fact, almost anyone who'd ever been in a room with her for more than five minutes probably has that impression. She has a serious charisma leak. She's one of those people who makes the room vibrate with her essence upon entering it. I can't say why exactly, she is just Very Alive and broadcasting on a resonant frequency or something. If she is at a party, I'm listening to her. Not because she's the loudest, just because she's enthralling. tylik is probably one of the most self-disciplined people I have ever known.k SHe sets high goals for herself, and sticks to their pursuit. She does all sorts of martial arts and other fitness things. This kind of dedication is something I utterly lack, so I read about hers, in hopes I will pick some up by osmosis.
Not only is her body limber, but her brain is too. She knows about esoteric (to me) topics such as speaking Chinese and technical aspects of music. She bakes bread in her brick wood-burning oven. Yum! She gardens! She geeks! Thanks to my description she now sounds like a circus act... oops. OK, she's just quite intense about her areas of interest. She's also tall and willowy and sexy as can be. She could sweep just about anyone off their feet if she so chose. Thus ends my take on tylik. Current Music: Poe - Control.mp3

10:35 am - tikva is even hotter than Peppermint Patty tikva is an inspiration to me. Forget What would Jesus do I think What would tikva post?
Even though I have never met her in person, I’ve "known" her for 12 years. She is one of the few people that I’m not shtupping who always makes it on my highest priority to read filter. This is because she is my own personal Dorothy Parker and Susie Bright, all rolled into one delicious strumpet. We are a pair of bi, blind, poly, cuddly, passionate, brazen, hair worshipping, pervy geek fanciers. How many of THOSE do you know?
She is fascinating to read because she is witty and unafraid to express her feelings, no matter what they are. I admire her integrity mightily! It’s not that she has had an uneventful life, she’s had her share of ups and downs (heh!) but that is what makes for an captivating personality. Seriously, people on easy street, who never had to work for their happiness tend to be boring. She is a gimp rights advocate, which is one of those activities I’d like to spend more of my time doing, but so far I don’t. Oo! Oo! She also introduced me to katybeth, for which my entire friend group is eternally grateful.
Someday, when we manage to coincide in the same location, we shall undoubtedly paint the town red! Even if we end up painting it green because the paint we bought was in a can with a red label that said GREEN in small print. She should visit Seattle so that silenceleigh and I can snuggle her in a Goddess Sandwich.
tikva is a sexy, funny and kind. What more? Current Mood: pleased Current Music: Melissa Etheridge - 06 - All American Girl.mp3

11:28 am - blind-friendly PDA (not Public Display of Affection, which have always been blind-friendly!) Finally! I had been wanting one of these for years. Read about the blind-friendly PDA called Maestro. I have my VoiceNote QT and this new one is not much cheaper, but it looks to be smaller and does more things. Oh Well, I need to just buckle down and use my Voicenore more. It is Very Cool too. Current Mood: geek envy Current Music: Boston Camerata - Laudate Dominum

10:25 am - I wonder if anyone will bite. I have not been posting much lately. I worked 8 hours yesterday, and that is relatively representative of my last week or so. To cheer me up, I shall offer the following meme.
Reply to this post if you want/need me to tell you how cool you are! Watch my journal over the next few days for a post just about you and why I think you rock my socks. Post these instructions in your journal and give your friends a much needed dose of love and adoration! Current Mood: tired Current Music: Holly Cole - I've Just Seen A Face

11:21 am - cool NPR story about part of my job I have spent a lot of time recently at work on this project "Individual Development Accounts". I just heard that on Friday morning, November 19th, NPR’s Morning Edition will nationally broadcast a 7 and a half minute story on asset building for the working poor, with a focus on Individual Development Accounts in particular. On Friday morning, web broadcasts can also be found at: http://www.npr.org/programs/morning/ So, if you listen to NPR, pay attention and hear about this cool part of my job! No, I'm not on the story :) Current Music: Depeche Mode - Master and servant

09:40 am - knowing me, knowing you Since I did thankful thursday on Monday, I'm doing this instead. I stole it from cassielsander who stole it from loopygirl
The problem with LJ is that we all *think* we are close, yet we know nothing about each other. I'd like to rectify that. I want you to ask me something you think you should know about me - something that should be obvious, but you don't have any knowledge of it.
Then, if you want, post this in your LJ and find out what people don't know about you.

09:26 am - EDIT: show me your lists! OK, I posted this yesterday, but now the link works. Let's see if changing the date on this works too.
I love looking at people's wish lists, be they amazon or otherwhere. Even if you don't expect that I'll want to buy you a present, comment me your wish list link if you are willing, and if I do not already have you listed as an amazon friend, so that I obviouisly know where to find it. I often get ideas from you clever people's wish lists. Being a self agrandizing Leo, here is mine.

01:29 pm - adopt a family This is just a quick PSA to say that if you are interested in adopting a homeless (in emergency shelter or transitional housing, usually) family for the holidays, the YWCA is ready for you. :) I have done this a couple of times, and it is fun to shop for them. You get a short wish list from the kids and mom, and you can just pick stuff up for them while you are doing your regular holiday shopping if you do that. I know that materialism is icky and stuff, but damn, the kids get SO HAPPY to get presents, and the parent is often even happier because they can gift their kids possibly for the first time in a few years. If you are not in to shopping, you can also donate some money or grocery gift certificates. Anyway, here's a link if you are interested. Current Mood: happy Current Music: Vienna Teng - Anna Rose

06:13 pm - Monday I missed my thankful Thursday, so I'm doing it today. Seems like a lot of people I know have been depressed lately, and if not that, then had bad things happen to them. So, I am going to post some things I am thankful for before I dwell on that more than I should.
- duckdaring did not get seriously injured in his car wreck, though sorry for the car. :(
- mholmesiv is such a sweet, sweet boy. Fun to Xmas shop with too.
- samvimes got a new job! and without even missing a beat.
- silenceleigh the gardening goddess
- beelzenomen who does not give himself enough credit for being damned cool to know.
- my job
- that we can bring Kilians over for the holidays
- that a civil war has not yet broken out in this country. I don't like war. I don't like the current mood of the nation, but I like getting shot even less. *sigh* Hmm, that did not turn out to be VERY thankful, did it?

01:14 pm - audio match
This thing has the potential to be cool. It is still a little rough around the edges. It keeps track of the last 50 songs I have played in winamp (or will, once I play 50 songs!) and will recommend new artists to me. I splurged and spent $7 on a one year subscription. I put this little image in my profile here, and it will show what I am listening to, on an ongoing basis. I will try to figure out how to get the invite code to get you a free 30 day trial if you are interested. Just felt like doing something light-hearted.

You Are a Liberal for Life |
You've got a bleeding heart - and you're proud of it.
For you, liberal means being compassionate, pro-government, and anti-business.
You believe in equality for every person, and you consider yourself universally empathetic.
Helping others is not just political for you ... it's very personal too.

10:37 am - Being a playful kitten can have its drawbacks Stupidest Injury EVAR.
mholmesiv and I were descending the stairs to go to work this morning. He usually thunders down the stairs fairly energetically. I was in front of him this time, and for some Strange Reason, I thought it would be funny to stop.
It was not.
I said "You think you can just run down the... Arrrrrrggggh!" I got a bony knee, with all his weight behind it right on my coccyx. IT BURNS! OW OW OW!
Edit: I am finding that as long as I lean forward in my chair, it is not so bad. Current Mood: amused and agonized
