Let's go to the movies! |

Cross-posted to damn_portlanders
Alright, so I'm pretty new in town and have basically no friends yet (hey - I'm a nanny, it's hard to make friends at work!), and I love watching movies/films/flicks what-have-you. Now I can see them alone, but it's also fun to go with people. So if anyone wants to see any of these movies any time this weekend (including later tonight) e-mail jennifer@inalienable.net and we'll see if we can work something out. Note - I'm not looking for romantic attachments, just acquaintances, friends, movie-going fun!
Here are the films I'd be interested in seeing, but if you have another suggestion, I might be game (locations specified because I don't have a car; if you have one and want to drive, other locations will work, too):
Suspiria (Fifth Avenue Cinemas Fri-Sat 9:30) Supersize Me (Fox Tower 10: 12, 1250, 220, 315, 440, 535, 7, 8, 930, 1030) Hidalgo (yeah, it probably sucks, but hey - Viggo! Laurelhurst 850) Osama (Laurelhurst 720) Dawn of the Dead (already seen, but really cool and $3! Avalon: 1005) Return of the King (ditto already seen, ditto really cool, ditto $3 Avalon: 320) Evil Cult (see review in the Mercury - Sabala's Mt Tabor Theatre 5 & 7)
Alright. Let's see if there are any other lonely movie geeks out there!

Forrest Grove |
[21 Apr 2004|10:58pm] |
Does anyone know anything more about the Forest Grove Film Festival that was talked about in Willamette Week's "Rogue of the Week" column? It sounds pretty horrible, but i wondered if there was anything more to it. I would certainly not want to support that festival if that article was true.

Next Tuesday, April 20th, Overthought Productions will be screening thier debut 35 minute film, "Through the Fall". It will take place at Nocturnal, located at 1800 E Burnside at 8:00 pm. The film will probably roll at 8:30. It will play downstairs in the bar area so it is a 21+ showing. For more information, and to watch a trailer, visit our website at http://www.overthought.net

Counting Crows - "Carriage" |
] |
Went to Spike & Mike's Sick & Twisted Festival of Animation last night. It was okay. There were only two or three shorts that I laughed out loud to. You can find information on the best ones at www.breehnburns.com".
They showed a Don Hertzfeldt animation, "Billy's Balloon" and I wonder if it's legal that they showed it because I know that Hertzfeldt mentioned something about disliking the way that Spike or Mike or whomever is still alive, is handling things and he decided to pull his animations from the Sick & Twisted festival. Curious.
I wouldn't really recommend paying $8.50 to watch the short animations. The majority of them were mediocre. The program is only playing at Cinema 21 for another month of something anyway (only on Friday and Saturday nights at 11:30). If you do want to catch them though, you should go soon.

Portland Internation Film Festival |
[27 Feb 2004|10:54am] |
Has anyone gone to any of the films that are being shown at the International Film Festival? I saw I'm Not Scared from Italy and Sexual Dependency from Bolivia. I'm Not Scared was alright. It had a very interesting place setting and I thought the young star did a very good job. But, I didn't like the ending as it was too upbeat for me. I would have preferred a more depressive, realistic ending, I think. Sexual Dependency on the other hand, was superb. I loved nearly every minute of it. We travel through 5 or 6 vignettes that center on a number of different characters from both Bolivia and the United States. They are mostly unrelated characters, though there is some connection or otherwise the plot wouldn't flow well. I really, really enjoyed it and my favorite section was "Mirrors" in which a black female college student recites directly into a camera during the majority of the vignette. If this one comes out again, for an encore screening. I highly suggest it.
I'm interested in seeing the Shorts IV and Italy's Good Morning, Night. Has anyone seen either of these? They were both shown on Thursday. I doubt I will be able to make either of these but I plan on putting them on my list for when they are released on video.
I hope that you guys were able to enjoy some of the films that came around to Portland. There are still 3 days left of the festival, so be sure to check some out. *grin*

Parkdale Film Festival |
[11 Feb 2004|12:18pm] |
The 2nd Annual Parkdale Film Festival is accepting submissions from indie filmmakers.
There will be three showings this year: One in Parkdale (near Hood River, Oregon), one in White Salmon, Washington and one in The Dalles. We've tried to focus on filmmakers from the Mid-Columbia region, but we'll accept submissions from anyone.
The festival is mostly made of shorts, but if you have a feature, e-mail the organizer, Jess Caudill.
Deadline for prize jury is March 1.
For more info, e-mail Jess Caudill: hrfilms@hotmail.com

Brother of Oklahoma Bombing Conspirator Sues Michael Moore
James Nichols, the brother of Terry Nichols, who was convicted on charges of acting as Timothy McVeigh's assistant in the Oklahoma City bombing, has filed a libel suit against Oscar-winning documentary maker Michael Moore. In the suit, Nichols claims that Moore misled him about the purposes of the his film, Bowling for Columbine, which, he said, "maliciously portrays him as the poster child for what is wrong with America today and falsely accuses him of being one of the perpetrators in the second-worst act of terrorism in the history of the United States." Nichols is seeking damages of from $10-20 million on each count.
