spelunking, cable, etc... here's an interesting log from a guy exploring a cave that everyone should read. It's long but interesting. Got it from someone earlier today, forget who. Do people really pay $50/mo for cable? It seems so unlikely, but I thought I'd check it out to see if getting cable+cable internet was cheaper than getting DSL in the new place. I might just be choosing the wrong options or something, because it looks like cable+internet is $100/mo. after the introductory offers. What's up with that? In comparision, you can get speakeasy DSL + VOIP for $85 a month, so you get phone services and everything. (I wasn't planning on getting their phone service.) You don't get television, though. I've never had cable before, I was mainly just thinking about getting it as a social experiment, and I'm not sure that this is a point at which I want to do that social experiment. |

sweet monkey budong Last night was one of those times when only frenetic activity would do. I started off at Charlies, hanging with various Chrises, and then went to the Garage, the Mercury, and then back to the Lower Level for Decibel Festival stuff. I then proceeded to hang at the Lower Level until more than a little past closing. Good times were had all around, and as a bonus, I got to see agent00orange and aurifex. Actually, I saw lots of people last night that I really haven't been seeing enough of of late. Tremendous amounts of fun was had overall. Moving was quite hysterical, the crack team of people hired to do the moving were completely useless, so not as much got done as I would have hoped. I did get everything out of the house, but the attempt to haev them clear out my storage container was thwarted by them going to the wrong pubilc storage and sitting in front of it for an hour or two. Also, they were supposed to bring a panel truck and brought a beat up pickup. So, back to square 2.5 on that one. The sort of warmup to grad school has been going well. All the fun starts monday morning with the all-day (dis)orientation meeting. |

People Die I read People Die by Kevin Wignall this morning before starting my day. It was a very good book, largely about connections between people, love, and that sort of end-of-20s doldrums with a tight contract killer plot laid over it. It's a very good book, with lots of really tight writing and good insight into people's behavior. The insight into human nature in the book is a lot better than the description of the contract killing, although this is an insanely well written book. What distinguishes this from the rest of the action field is the non-trivial introspection that goes on during it. I heartily recommend it. |

fish, barrel, barrel, barrel, mushroom, mushroom long day on the open prairie today, i was going to go to the gym this morning but one thing after another happened and then suddenly it was about 5:30. I have a meeting at 6, and then I am probably going to drop by a birthday party for a while at least. My new music classification system is that everything is either IDM or Bluegrass. This makes a lot of things easier when picking what genre to listen to. Yesterday, I went to the iSchool tech boot camp, reviewed the slides, and then decided to take off after talking to my friend G- who said she was suprised I showed up for it. Since she was teaching, I left. I'm sort of finishing up the sale of the house for the next week or so and trying to get some other things done. Current Mood: (better than exsanguinated) |

frankenocchio returns Frankenocchio is back in town for another run. Anyone interested? I remember a bunch of people wanted to see it last time and had to cancel. |

tragicomedy of nothing I didn't get much actual moving into the apartment done this weekend. I got a load or two in, but that's about it. Instead, I spend the weekend in a mish-mash of random activity where I caught up with a lot of friends. I spent Saturday night hanging out at the lower level waiting for something to happen at a nearby venue. Eventually, some people came down from the big comedy event upstairs. A bar full of comedians is less funny than you think. At one point, this guy kept telling me a joke over and over again about someone falling down a flight of stairs. He kept saying, "You just had to watch and feel sorry for the guy!" I then told him, "I'm apparently less compassionate and more disinterested than you are." He just turned and walked away to the sound of the bartender laughing at him. feh. damn unfunny comics. This weekend was interesting because I ended up spending a lot of it on my own. I needed a lot of time to think about various things that are going on. Still feels like I'm making all the right choices. We'll see what happens when classes start, which is 8 days from now, more or less. Also, I spent a lot of time pondering the underlying issue about the relativity of human experience as described by the movie hero. |

hero Last night, after a couple of go-rounds with changing plans, marjoriebaldwin and I went to see Hero at the Pacific Place. It was one of the most impressively cinematographic movies i've seen in a long time. ( spoilers ) |

note so, i'm not expounding on the power of the internet for a while just as we make sure something will happen or not. |

the power of the internet wow, the internet is a strange and powerful thing. the world really is a strange place. |

me vs. sidekick, round 3 in my current battle in getting the sidekick working, Skye and I drilled out the screw in the back, and then i disassembled the phone so I could get to the faulty power parts. I then resoldered it back together with a massively too powerful soldering gun that should never be used on electronic equiprment. It now appears to be recharging, but I have to get some zipties or something of the right size to get the case to lock closed. |

tonight, this weekend... Anyone want to have a pre-xentropic dinner tonight? I'm going to be on the hill until then. Say, the elysian at 8pm? |
|
|||||
hmmmm.... my house passed the slope inspection today or yesterday, so now it looks like it will almost definitely sell real soon now. Current goal for a closing date is 10/1. had three plans for tonight which cancelled, now i've got a new one. trala. |
|

oh, yeah, and... I got an apartment this morning, subject only to the application being accepted. It's on the north side of capitol hill in the same building as xythen and only a couple of blocks from ziptie. It isn't in one of the neighborhood cores that I was looking at, but it is conveniently accessible to all of them. I guess I'm moving in this weekend on sunday if all goes well. might move the trip to portland to next weekend. |

more bm "well, i had two wheels off the ground, but they were both on the same axle so i assume everything's okay." |
|

also... i got a full-price offer for my house on Friday. The real estate agent got in touch with me yesterday, and we went over the paperwork. The people buying it want to do an inspection and an inspection of the underlying land. Assuming that goes well, the whole process will close on October 11th or so. |

more burning man quotes It seems like every year, some quote or other from rocky horror gets picked up and spread all over my BM friends. This year, it was 'antici.... pation.' Usual use: 'We're all just sitting here quivering with antici.... pation' or the like. |
|
|||||
getting back. i feel strangely disconnected from a lot of non-burners this year while i'm readjusting. I think that the pre-event-fu carried me all the way through the event this year. It's making a lot of people seem like glaring idiots, especially when i'm in deep verbal aikido ranger mode, which i seem to be drifting in and out of at random at this point. ah, life. how we bend ourselves around you. also, randomly: decided to try wearing my hair down again and see how that goes. vanity! |

today's mispelterating 5http. I just can't stop laughing. I also saw 'flamable' on a sign in the UD today instead of the more customary 'flammable.' |
