Bio:Jewel Blackfeather grew up a mixed-breed wild-child with a penchant for creating in as many ways as was possible. Her father is mostly Blackfoot with a little Norse, while her mother is Swiss and Dutch with a dash of Central Cherokee, making her a genetic dichotomy. Plains raiders and Vikings fill one side of her lineage, while the other is populated with peacemakers. She’s a little of both and admits that she likes to claw and bite at convention because it makes her a stronger person. Some people have claimed she’s scary, while others have said she’s the fiercest thing they’ve ever seen. As with everything, she is all of these things and more.

Her father was a highly decorated officer in the Army and a bit of a road warrior besides, so Jewel spent most of her childhood bouncing from one place to the next in her dad’s beat-up Ford truck. She's lived in more places than she has letters in all of her names combined (and that's a lot!). Language fascinates her, and she knows how to talk with various accents: Southern, Northern, Eastern, Western, and New Yorkese, as well as a bunch of languages. Her parents owned a ceramics shop in Virginia for a while. At this humble establishment, she learned (through the trial and error of putting different glazes in her hair) the art of camouflage and colour. Her hair is still like Joseph’s multicoloured coat.

By the time she was five, she was a truck-stop trickster, midnight dreamer, sofa-screamer, playwright, writer, finger-painter, musician, lover of life, dancer, master flirt, storyteller, folk heroine, and potter. By six, she moved on to concocting mysterious potions from mud and making little boys cry with her kisses and punches. A bit of a child prodigy, she had a habit of reading anything she could get her tiny hands upon. She still carries this trait. Scholastic aptitude tests determined her IQ too high for her to ever be cool. Jewel was cool anyway because she didn’t care.

During her tumultuous adolescence, she snarled at the patriarchy, played too many instruments in too many bands, drew pictures of spirit animals, prayed for rain and sunshine at many a powwow, dreamed of angel-boys and faery-girls to make love to, and braided feathers into her hair everywhere she went. A private Catholic school was no match for her brains or determination, and she ended up graduating early. By sixteen, she was legally emancipated as a minor and trying to make a living on her own. Throughout her first firefly days, she lived with a flamboyantly adorable gay man who insisted he was the king of all gays. Drag queens often performed scenes from Mommie Dearest in her living room.

At an old/young twenty, she received a Bachelor’s degree. Soon thereafter, she worked for state government in her home-state, where she gained fine insights on the world of politics, a place that caused her to feel stressed and her eyes to squint. By twenty-four, she was snarling her way through law school and an assured future. Oddly, after getting her master’s degree, she hit the brakes on the direction her future was taking and decided to test her skills as an artist. Since then, she’s been homeless, hopped trains, relied on the mercies of strangers, lived in a commune, played her cello on street corners, had wine and conversation with prominent filmmakers, met angels disguised as regular people, written bratty letters to rockstars, exchanged secrets with everyone's mamas, been all over the world, and burned trails wherever she's gone. Her life has been beautifully strange, and she likes it that way. She's been arrested a few times, and is known for lewd acts in public that sometimes involve nakedness. That's how anti-cowgirls live.

Currently, she’s a writer for her beloved Numb Magazine. For Numb, Jewel has covered topics from eating disorders to Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and poems, such as an elegy for Gwendolyn Brooks. She also conducts interviews. Some of her recent subjects have been Isabel Allende, Ernie Barnes, Noam Chomsky, Fatboy Slim, Janeane Garofalo, Spike Lee, David Scott Moyer, Yoko Ono, and Floria Sigismondi. Numb was nominated in the Utne Reader under the "Best New Title" category for Utne's independent press and media awards. Some of Numb's other features have been on Christian Bök, Nelly Furtado, Ben Harper, Derrick Jensen, Sarah Jones, Stephen Marshall (of the Guerilla News Network), Graph Nobel, Joss Stone, Dr. Cornel West, and Women in Black. Numb sometimes also gets her into shows as a press-person, where she’s gotten hugs and purrs from Daniel Lanois and Lucinda Williams. She’s impossibly drunk on life and music.

Aside of working for Numb, she freelances as a widely published writer, poet, musician, and painter. Some of her recently published pieces include "Spiders: My Friends, My Foes" essay at Personal Journaling Magazine (put out by the editors of Writer's Digest), "It's a Drag" essay at Ruby Slipper, "A Prayer for Mary" essay at Soapbox Girls, and "When We Were Fourteen" as an introduction to the Youth Writings section at V.O.I.C.E.. In addition, she’s been a panelist for the Diarist Awards and featured in J-Log's Media Diet and at the Bisexual Resource Center and A Bi-Friendly Place, where her essay "Kiss the Girl" simultaneously appears. Some of her other pursuits include printing of her "Mandala to Mandala" essay in the December 2003 issue of The Chrysalis Reader and inclusion of her short story "Carving a Woman" in the print anthology, Best Lesbian Erotica 2004 in November of 2003 by Cleis Press.

Currently, she’s preparing for a reprinting of her chapbook, Discoloured Confessions; a desert novel, These Silent Deaths; and a book of nonfiction life-vignettes, Twenty-eight Ghosts of Twenty-eight Girls. Her online journal, which has been in existence since 2000, is a monster spawning hate mail and wonderfully weird gifts of tarot card refrigerator magnets and blues music.

Presently, she resides at Arcosanti, an urban laboratory begun by the world-renowned architect Paolo Soleri. Here, she is Dr. Soleri’s editor. In November 2003, she was instrumental in the release of two printed texts, Eros and Concrete Earthcasting. More will follow in the following year. In addition to editing, she has posed as one of the models in the Nudes project.

While she is here in the desert, learning and absorbing everything, she has begun to learn knitting, studying photography with a trusty Nikon Cool Pix 950 Digital Camera as her companion. Jewel's also making semiprecious stone beaded jewelry to sell at markets, galleries, and a website she’s developing. She's a bad-ass welder chick, and wants to know more about blacksmithing. Another of her many, strange projects will involve her touring the country in a van (summer 2005*), serving as a muse and the embodiment of many people’s ghosts on a photographic journey. This trip will conclude in Mexico during Dia De Los Muertos.

In what spare time she has, she makes additions to her list of Ultimate Badasses of All Time with her pal Erik, misses her redheaded cinnamon girl Mirelle, exchanges curbside philosophies with her chum Lynn, draws with pencils and puts leaves in her hair with her lovely Monica, goes on walks with the marvelous Siobhan, visits her homegirl Ali, huddles near a phone to tell secrets to her sweet Kashi, blows finger-kisses to her twin Jeremy, yearns to see the valley of the butterflies in Mexico with her amigo Carlos, tells secrets with her former housemate Haley, whirls like a dervish with her roommate Selvam, plots poems and revolutions with her heroine Eva, and does a whole lot of other things that are sometimes illegal and death-defying but always fun. Sometimes, sleeping fits into this whole life thing, too.

Being a mother is one of the only things she’s ever known she would be. She decided this at the age of twelve when she read a book on Josephine Baker. Following Josephine’s lead, she began keeping a series of journals for her future children, a practice she continues to present day. She doesn’t need anyone else to complete her, but she has secret, soft aspirations of making a tangle-haired angel-boy ache for her so much that he thinks of her while showering at truck-stops and playing with the silverware at greasy spoon diners. She’ll be his backwoods Nefirtiti, sitting on barges of wheat and wood violets, and he’ll be her hooved Pan, playing songs for her everywhere they roam. He’ll know how beautiful he is by the look in her eyes as she watches him. She will marry him on a beach in Hawai'i, weeping because it’s been such a long time of waiting for him. They’ll make poems and babies, lead remarkable lives together, always innovate however they may, and never slow down. "Marry me, some nice boy," should be her mantra if she ever meets this person. This is but one of her many dreams.

Who Jewel is, these whorls of blood and spirit upon paper, is not for consumption, thievery, slander, or malice. She is as she breathes: open. Make her laugh and you've a loyal friend for life. Earn her scorn with false boasts and claims. She will be your personal thunderstorm, private Mary Magdalene, and favourite mistake. She bites with badger-teeth and sleeps like an August monsoon. Let her live. Her skin is made of rain and sometimes, she dreams ghosts. Her tongue is tempered by kindness, but sometimes too fierce for its own good. Be gentle. She's got a crush on everyone she meets and thinks life likes her, too. Also, she doesn't usually talk about herself in the third person, but this is a bio, so she'll do it while she can.

* If you’d like to host Jewel and her companions on a leg of her tour, meet with her, or know of resources she can use for this artistic odyssey, E-mail her at astreetfaery@aol.com.
