The Euro 2004 football tournament kicks off (literally) on Saturday. England should get through their group, probably as runners up to France.
I think Italy will win the tournament.
As usual, I've entered a *dream team* competition run by one of our daily newspapers for the duration of the tournament, &, as usual, I'll probably do crap. :p

I know which I'd rather choose in a fight. :p
It's here! The Bridport Prize writing contest has come around again. I've entered something in this, on & off, for the past 25 years or so, mainly for my own amusement.
The deadline is the end of this month &, as is usual for me, I've started late. The piece I'm working on is, provisionally, titled 'ANGEL'.
I don't really know where it's leading because I'm typing it straight out on my wordprocessor rather than scribbling notes & ideas down first. I actually find that I can be more creative when writing it out as I'm thinking it.
This story, like the one I entered last year, is also in a genre I'm not used to writing in. I'm much more comfortable in a science fiction/fantasy world. :)
Anyway, without further ado, this is what I've written so far.....I give you.... ( ANGEL )

While I was off work for ten days, I checked the local papers & online to see what jobs were on offer. Nothing stood out.
Today was my first day back at work. Wednesday is also jobs day in the Telegraph & Argus. There were 3 jobs that appealed. Where were they last frickin' week?
Anyway, I've written an application out for one of them & I'll post it on the way to work in the morning. It's for a picker/packer on nights at a fresh produce warehouse on the outskirts of the city centre so I'd only have to catch one bus there.
I've had it with the United Co-operative Society. It's like working in a slave-labour camp & they've just turned our warehouse upside down. It's like a tip at the moment.
One thing that I can guarantee is this. The old Yorkshire Co-operative Society always made a good profit. Our warehouse always kept our stores well serviced. Questions will be asked soon in the boardroom as to why this is all starting to change & it'll all fall on the head of the current GM who is from the other depot.
Shame I won't be around to see it.

I sent Jacqui a text message from my mobile phone to hers. I wasn't sure if I'd be able to do that but my phone is a TriBand one, which means I can use it in the US. Anyway, she phoned me in the early hours this morning to say that she'd got it & had sent me one back. Because she'd never used her phone for sending texts before though, she wasn't sure if I'd get it or not. I did. :D
I checked my account on the Virgin website to see how much it had cost me to send a text to the US. Turns out it was only 20p. :D

This morning I had a phonecall from someone at the licensing office.
Now let's just paper over the fact that ma received a letter from them a couple of months ago. That shouldn't have happened because she has a TV licence. Let's put it down to just one of those things.
Following that letter she had a visit from someone who took down all the details of her licence. She received another letter very much like the first & that's what prompted me to get in touch with them.
Onto this morning's conversation. For some inexplicable reason, the chap who took down the details of ma's licence, informed his department that her address wanted changing also to No 33A! WTF!! Was this person on drugs?
Anyway, now everything is back how it was & she shouldn't, & I stress again, SHOULDN'T be hearing from them again for a looooooooooooong time.
I won't be holding my breath that's for sure.

When I went to visit ma yesterday morning, she showed me a letter she’d received from TV Licensing, informing her that their officers would be in her neighbourhood shortly, visiting people who, according to their records, don’t have a TV licence to watch their TV’s with. Ma would be one that they’re definitely going to drop in on.
Okay, that’s fine, but....... SHE HAS A FRICKIN’ TV LICENCE; SHE’S ALWAYS HAD A FRICKIN’ TV LICENCE BECAUSE I PAY FOR IT EVERY MONTH BY DIRECT DEBIT, SOMETHING I’VE BEEN DOING SINCE WHEN MY DAD WAS STILL ALIVE.
Want to know the best thing. This is the second letter that she’s received in as many months. After the first one, someone DID visit her & he couldn’t understand why their records were showing that there wasn’t one for her address. He wrote down all the details of her licence & took them away with him.
So........ WHY THE FRICKIN’ HELL IS SHE STILL GETTING LETTERS SAYING THAT SHE DOESN’T HAVE A LICENCE WHEN ONE OF THEIR OWN FRICKIN’ PEOPLE HELD THE FRICKIN’ THING IN HIS OWN FRICKIN’ HAND?
The letter that she showed me is addressed to “The Present Occupier". People do this when they have no records of who lives at a particular address.
So...... EVEN AFTER SOMEONE FRICKIN’ VISITED HER & WROTE DOWN ALL HER FRICKIN’ DETAILS THEY STILL DON’T HAVE HER NAME ON THEIR RECORDS NEVER FRICKIN’ MIND THAT SHE HAS A TV FRICKIN’ LICENCE.
I sent them a polite but strong email this morning, informing them that my ma did in fact have a TV licence, something she’s had for many years & could they kindly update their records to show this.
I hate this kind of crap. I’ve had it myself in the past with TV Licensing. Although I have a TV, I don’t watch TV channels on it, just DVD’s & games, so I don’t need a licence. That took a while to sort out. It’s not just them though. All the Utilities operators are like that & local government.
I’m expected to do my job right, otherwise I’d probably get dismissed (no bad thing at the moment, trust me) yet, these kind of inept people seem to get away with it.

This morning I had an 8:30 appointment with the Nurse at my GP's surgery, to have my blood pressure taken. It was 130/7, which means nothing to me but she said it was excellent so I wasn't going to argue with her. We also had a little chat about my asthma, diet & exercise. She said I might as well get weighed while I was there so I did. Now let me tell you about my weight.
I eat like an horse. No, not out of a trough. :p I can eat ANYTHING, ALL DAY, & I still won't pile on the pounds. I always hover around the 9st mark. I think the heaviest I've ever been was 9st4lbs & I didn't like that. I FELT too heavy. Anyway, at the moment I weigh a little over 8st9lbs & she said that was okay.
At the end of it all she gave me a clean bill of health. :)
Should I worry?

Well, my 5 day weekend is over & I'm back at the madhouse tomorrow. I only have a one-day weekend this week to look forward to as well.
I have no idea what I'll be going back to. Monday was the day we were supposed to *officially* transfer over to the computerised TRICEPS operating system. All you heard from management last week was....
"It's the big switch on on Monday!" "Monday's the day we go *live*!"
Personally, I hope it's fucked up.
