FAQ Question #162

» Why am I being logged out of LiveJournal? What can I do to solve this problem?

If you are having problems staying logged into LiveJournal -- for instance, if you are randomly logged out when moving from page to page -- it is most likely a problem with your browser or Internet connection. There are several steps you can take that may solve this problem.

First, clear your web browser's cache files. Information on how to do this can be found here: http://www.livejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=160. This will make sure you are actually being logged out, instead of viewing a saved version of the page.

Then, log out of LiveJournal, delete all LiveJournal cookies in your browser, and make sure that your browser is properly accepting cookies. Information on deleting cookies can be found at http://www.livejournal.com/users/howto/19563.html, provided as a courtesy by support volunteers. Information on making sure that your browser is accepting cookies can be found in your browser's help files.

You will also need to make sure that your computer's date, time, and timezone settings are correct. If your computer's clock is ahead of or behind the correct time by more than a few days, you won't be able to remain logged in.

Using the "Bind to IP Address" option does not work if your IP address changes regularly (such as every time you make a new connection to your ISP). If you have selected this option and cannot remain logged in, unselecting it may help.

Also, you should be aware that if you select the "When Browser Closes" option, your session will expire after 24 hours of inactivity whether you have closed your browser or not. You will have to log in again. Likewise, if you select the "Never Expire" option, your session will expire after 60 days of inactivity. Activity includes loading any page on LiveJournal.

If none of this helps you, you will need to contact your Internet provider and let them know that you cannot remain logged into a website that uses cookies for authentication, and ask them for help troubleshooting the problem. We have found that some Internet providers use proxy servers which interfere with cookie settings.

If you receive an error message while logging into LiveJournal, please see http://www.livejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=211.
