Quite apt for today.
In Flanders Fields

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

John McCrae (1872 - 1918)

They shall not grow old,
As we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them,
Nor the years condemn,
At the going down of the sun
And in the morning
We will remember them

How very sad.. I still used to listen to his show at night sometime.. his unique voice will be sorely missed. I saw him at glastonbury last year.. he seemed so sprightly too.. :-(

So V festival then.. we didn't get there until about 3 ish.. we had missed Athlete by then :-( and Pink was on stage..we moved through the crowd and got quite close to the front.. she was surprisingly good actually.. better than I expected. She's what I call "prock" .. pop rock. She's not quite credible, but at least her support band had guitars.. and a black drummer.. that's quite unusual.. not something you see every day.. well, at least not over here. After she was done, looking actually quite fit, we decided to go for a walk and get a drink.. managed to get a rip off programme and lanyard/neck show time thing.. went to the bar and kate bought me a pint a strongbow.. that went down extra well in the sun.. though not too good on an empty stomach.. oh well.

Now it was time for Faithless.. I've seen them quite a few times before and every time they've been ace.. and they didn't disappoint. We managed to get about 15 or so rows from the front.. it was just comfortable weather too.. not too hot and not not too chilly. Played all the faves.. think Insomnia was third track in.. as soon as that came on.. the whole place went mad.. I looked back and for as far as I could see they were people dancin in the sun.. superb stuff. They introduced a new singer dude on stage who was just okay.. nowt to write home about.. but it was like a white bloke sorta rappin.. weird stuff and I didn't think it worked too well.

God is a DJ and we come one got similarly superb reactions.. everyone shoutin "ONE!" after maxi went "WE Come....!" Kewl stuff. It wa sonly spoilt by maxi givin it the usual snoresome bit about Iraq, Bush and Blair.. blah blah blah boring.. heard it all before.. at least there doing summin about it etc etc. Anyway, apart from that, they were great.

They went off and it was time for the Charlatans.. we walked up the back for this to get a better view.. heard "The only one I know" and I had a dance and a sing to meself. Kate ain't really into them so doesn't really appreciate them, I don't think. Walked down to the shops and heard a lil bit of Keane on the NME stage. Mooched aboot the shops and had a bite to eat.. then went back to the main stage to watch Dido.. she was really good.. first time i've seen her, she has a gorgeous voice and she is PROPER FIT.. really gorgeous and pretty.. even if she does have a bit of a crazy name.. "Dido Florian Decloud Bounaeville" or summink like that anyway ! Mad name.

After an hour of her we decided to make our way to the dance tent JJB arena, cos kate wanted to see Kelis.. but it was rammed and the retired coppers security were stopping anyone else going in. Walked back to the main stage abd strangely Embrace were on the NME stage we went back. They weren't meant to be but we heard "My weakness is none of your business".. still sounds good that one.

Got back to the main stage and they were setting up for Muse. They came on.. they are so good live.. second time i've seen em now.. very good indeed. Did all the usual hits.. "Unintended", "Plug in Baby" etc.. they did that right before they went off for the encore.. we left for the car then as it was gettin reet chilly and we didn't wanna get stuck in hours of traffic.. we got a crepe on the way baack though.. cheese and ham.. so nice.

Got back to the car and we were off site in four minutes ! Some benefit to arriving late I suppose !

Got home in one hour, 45 minutes.. in stead of three hours to get there. Next year, I think we'll go for the whole weekend, depending on who's playing. Good day out, all in all.

A passenger in a taxi tapped the driver on the shoulder to ask him something. The driver screamed, lost control of the cab, nearly hit a bus, drove up over the curb, and stopped just inches from a large plate glass window. For a few moments everything was silent in the cab, then the driver said, Please, don't ever do that again. You scared the daylights out of me."

The passenger, who was also frightened, apologized and said he didn't realise that a tap on the shoulder could frighten him so much, to which the driver replied, "I'm sorry, it's really not your fault at all.

Today is my first day driving a cab. I have been driving a hearse for the last 25 years.

Ed finally decides to take a vacation. He books himself on a Caribbean cruise and proceeds to have the time of his life--until the boat sank.
He found himself swept up on the shore of an island with no other people, no supplies...nothing...only bananas and coconuts. After about four months, he is lying on the beach one day when the most gorgeous woman he has ever seen rows up to him. In disbelief, he asks her, 'Where did you come from ? How did you get here ?' 'I rowed from the other side of the island,' she says. 'I landed here when my cruise ship sank.' 'Amazing,' he says. 'You were really lucky to have a rowboat wash up with you.' 'Oh, this ?' replies the woman. 'I made the rowboat out of raw material I found on the island. The oars were whittled from gum tree branches. I wove the bottom from palm branches. And the sides and stern came from a Eucalyptus tree.' 'But, but, that's impossible,' stutters Ed. 'You had no tools or hardware. How did you manage ?' 'Oh, that was no problem,' replies the woman. 'On the south side of the island, there is a very unusual strata of alluvial rock exposed. I found if I fired it to a certain temperature in my kiln, it melted into forgeable ductile iron. I used that for tools and used the tools to make the hardware.' Ed is stunned. 'Let's row over to my place,'
she says. After a few minutes of rowing, she docks the boat at a small wharf.

As Ed looks onto shore, he nearly falls out of the boat. Before him is a stone walk leading to an exquisite bungalow painted in blue and white. While the woman ties up the rowboat with an expertly woven hemp rope, he could only stare ahead, dumbstruck. As they walk into the house, she says casually, 'It's not much, but I call it home. Sit down
please. Would you like to have a drink ?' 'No, no, thank you.' he says, still dazed. 'Can't take any more coconut juice.' 'It's not coconut juice,' the woman replies. 'I have a still. How about a Pina Colada ?'

Trying to hide his continued amazement, he accepts, and they sit down on her couch to talk. After they have exchanged their stories, the
woman announces, 'I'm going to slip into something more comfortable. Would you like to take a shower and shave ? There is a razor upstairs in the cabinet in the bathroom.'

No longer questioning anything, Ed goes into the bathroom. There, in the cabinet, is a razor made from a bone handle. Two shells honed to a hollow ground edge are fastened on to its end inside of a swivel
mechanism. 'Wow ! This woman is amazing!' he muses, 'What next ?' When he returns, she greets him wearing nothing but vines-strategically positioned-and smelling faintly of gardenias. She beckons for him to sit down next to her. 'Tell me,' she begins suggestively, slithering closer to him, 'We've been out here for a really long time. You've been lonely. There's something I'm sure you really feel like doing right now, something you've been longing for all these months. You know...' She stares into his eyes. He can't believe what he's hearing:

'You mean---', he swallows excitedly, 'I can check my email from here ?!'
