So Miss A and I went down to the beach yesterday to go shopping for cute summer hippy clothes at Picasso Moon. Well, we couldn't find it, so we somehow managed to decide to go get our bodies pierced instead. So I have a nice new piece of metal through my eyebrow, and the lovely A has something sticking through her bottom lip.

I put it down to temporary insanity.
Here's a preveiw, I'll take anotherwhen the swelling's gone down a bit. Unfortunately, I didn't get to take A's pic yet.

Also, it's only April and my freckles have already multiplied by 1000. Ack.

02:18 pm - This is why I love the Angela:
We get into these conversations. Bizarre, random weirdness abound when we're together. For example, today we were talking about books, and I said I wanted to be cremated with my books. Then I told her about one of my favorite words: Cremains (cremated human remains.) Then she said it csounds like some kind of cuisine. For there we get to "Let's watch what happens now that we've secretly replaced Emeril's Bam Powder with human cremains."

And there was much laughter.

Book update:

10.The Good House Tananarive Due. Decent horror novel that involves voodoo and a house.

11.A Demon in my View Ruth Rendell. Another good one by my favoorite mystery author.

Plus I'm almost done with two more (I know, the suspense is killing you.) I've haven't finished as many as I'd hoped so far, too much WoWing, studying and crafty-ing.

:cries:

Firefox somehow managed to delete ALL of my bookmarks. I am super ultra mega pissed. Hours spent looking up stuff, organizing etc. etc. gone with the wind. I googled to see if there was a solution, tried system restore, making sure FF hadn't accidentally reated a second profile, all for naught. I feel so lost on the big scary internet now.

I'll gratefully accept any essential or just plain cool links people might want to post.

09:25 am - AIDS, Foo Fighters, and bad words
I want to talk about something that's been chapping my ass lately. It's the Foo Fighters. I'm not exactly a huge fan, so I'd never heard before that they're a bunch of GULLIBLE FUCKING IDIOTS. Why would I think so? because they're HIV deniers. They have a link to here: http://www.aliveandwell.org/ on their website. It's a site about how AIDS isn't caused by the virus HIV (contrary to 20 years of research and the medical opinions of 99.9999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999% of doctors and every person with two brain cells to rub together.)

There's also an article here: http://www.motherjones.com/news/feature/2000/02/foo.html about the band and their links with Alive and Well. Here's a juicy little quote:

"In January, Foo Fighters bassist Nate Mendel helped organize a sold-out concert in Hollywood to benefit the group. Foo fans were treated to a speech by Alive and Well founder Christine Maggiore, who believes AIDS may be caused by HIV-related medications, anal sex, stress, and drug use, and implies that people should not get tested for HIV nor take medications to counter the virus. Free copies of Maggiore's self-published book, "What If Everything You Thought You Knew About AIDS Was Wrong?," in which she declares "there is no proof that HIV causes AIDS," were also passed out to the concert-goers."

The sad thing is that article is over 5 years old, and they're still linking to that site. This isn't momentary madness, it's long term, dangerous loonyism. Fuck them. They're as bad as Holocaust deniers with the added fact that they're influencing their young people with this garbage. How many kids are going to read that crap and convince themselves that HIV really doesn't exist, so why should they have to wear a condom? It's hard enough to get teens (and I know, I was one) to practice safe sex without fucking morons like this making it harder.

Ok, rant off.

Oops, sorry about the entry that was here. Instead, I shall update my book list.

8. BTVS: Tales of the Slayer vol.1 by various authors

Ok, not a great work of fiction my any stretch. It entertained and was a bit of a Buffy fix.

9. Liquor Poppy Z. Brite

I really liked this one. A couple of guys open a restaurant in New Orleans. If you like food, or books with a bit of a thrill, give it a try.

02:46 pm - Supreme Court does something right.

Supreme Court Strikes Down Death Penalty for Juveniles

By Fred Barbash
Washington Post Staff Writer
Tuesday, March 1, 2005; 1:28 PM

The Supreme Court, in a landmark death penalty decision, today barred executions of people under 18 years of age at the time of their crimes.

By vote of 5-to-4, the court said in a case from Missouri that there is now a "consensus" in American society that juveniles, along with the mentally retarded, are "less culpable" for their crimes because they lack sound judgment.

Execution is therefore a "disproportionate" sanction that violates the 8th Amendment's prohibition of cruel and unusual punishment, the court ruled, overturning a precedent it established in Stanford v. Kentucky in 1989.

This makes me very very happy.  I'm against the death penalty, and it has always upset me that the government has seen fit to punish children as if they were adults (especially giving them the death penalty) instead of trying to rehabilitate them. Every teenager does stupid things and makes bad decisions, some in the extreme. Is it really right to give up on a 15 year old? Are we to think a sixteen year old is a hardened criminal beyond all hope for redemption?  Now if we could convince those in power to put our resources into prevention and rehabilitation instead of punishment we'd really be getting somewhere.

11:55 am - Shed of 1000 Spiders (ok, just one big one.)
Instead of renting a storage space for all the crap lying around this house, I decided to clear out the shed thing out back and make it a usable space for stuff. Angela generously offered to come and help, and we got started yesterday by clearing a pile of brush left over last autumn. So far, so good.

Next we get the shed open and begin pulling stuff out. Oh look, the used motor oil my dear husband was 'storing' is now all over the floor. Great! So we start shuffling, sorting, and sweeping. And then Angela looks at me and says "Sarah, you have a spider on your shirt." I look down, expecting to see a little one, already starting to freak a little...

...and let out a scream of pure panic. And then I completely and totally lose it. A giant arachnid of evilness is on me. I'm caught between "ohmygod there's a huge SPIDER one me getitoffnow" and "oh shit I have to TOUCH the SPIDER to getitofmenow." And my mind breaks. I start screaming and screaming and screaming.

I manage to get out of the shed, but Angela won't come out because she's laughing. I persuade her I don't mind and a few cigarettes later I've calmed down. I braved the shed again and we finished clearing out.

We found the spider near the end, and Angela smooshed it for me. I know, we shouldn't have killed it, but my sanity trumped it's right to existence. Sorry Mrs. Spider!

One good thing, we found a bag of stuff I used to keep in my old car. There were a bunch of buttons and stickers, my ancient Hot Topic badge, voodoo hairbraids, a collection of purple matchbox cars, and my old tapes. Now I get to listen to them and find out what's one them. Yay!

07:05 pm - Hold on to your hats, I'm updating!
Today was interesting. I had anatomy lab, and got to look at buckets of organs! I was a bit disappointed last year that we didn't get to see any human remains last semester, so I was quite excited. Dr Mitchell showed us hearts, including one with serious arteriosclerosis, lungs, and kidneys. We also got to see the spleen of a man with acromegaly (giantism in adults) it was huge! An organ that is usually about the size of an open hand was about the size of a liver.

I have two tests tomorrow, math (ugh) and anatomy lecture. I love Dr Mitchel, but he's definately harder than the profs last semester. On the other hand, he really makes you want to learn the material.

I realize I never posted about my grades from last semester, so I'll do it now.
Anatomy & Physiology I: A
Intro to health professions: A
GPA: still 4.0

I promised Angela I'd post pix of my hair, so I'll do that tomorrow. Tonight, I study! ...and watch Lost.

Do you get phases of musical obsessions? Songs that you have to leave on repeat for days on end? Bands you hear and immediately go out and purchase their album(s) and listen to over and over, until your SO/roommate/hedgehog ends up whimpering in a little ball in the corner? If so tell me I'm not alone, please!

My current compulsion is to play The Faint over and over. Some mentioned them in their LJ and so I tripped on over to the site to check them out. A couple days later I went to my lovely local indie shop and bought Wet From Birth, a few days after that Danse Macabre. My husband thinks they're terrible. Ha, sweet revenge for making me listen to Oasis and Coldplay over and over and over.

I think Against Me! might be headed for the treatment, they really blew me away last week.

So, tell me, what are you listening to?

09:42 am - Time to write a real enrty
I'm making myself sit and write. Why is writing so hard for me? I see the blank page/screen and my mind goes blank too. Then I start writing, read whatever I've written and it all sounds stupid, stilted, or silly. The words just flow out of my mouth, why can't they flow from my fingers?

Classes are going ok, I'm worried about the test I took in A&P; lecture yesterday. I seriously need to set aside an hour every day to read over my notes and generally study. The problem is that I can usually take a test and get an A or B with only an hour or two of halfhearted cramming beforehand. The trouble comes when I'm not understanding the material, I look at whatever it is and my brain freezes up. That's what happened with yesterday's stuff, I was playing eenie meenie mienie moe on about half the questions. Yikes. I do much better with Lab, it so much easy to study when I can see what I'm looking at. Want to know where your platysma or pronator teres is? Sure! Ask me to explain the molecular structure of myofibrils? I can spout off the right words, but I don't actually get it.

Off to learn about the nervous system!

I went to see The Bouncing Souls & Against Me with Angela last night. Against Me were great, talented guys with tons of energy. They played like they really wanted to be there and were enjoying themselves. The Souls were very enjoyable, but looked a little tired. I got soaking wet, an elbow to the jaw, and a set of ringing ears. Also, my toes kept cramping up. It's a sign I'm too old to be doing this (or maybe that I need new shoes.)
