how not to celebrate a baseball victory.
last night i witnessed something truly inane. something so appalling i had to write about it. on wednesday night red sox fans filled the streets around fenway park to celebrate a victory over the yankees. i dont know what im more distressed about....the behavior of the fans or the extremes abuse of power on the police's behalf. fans were dancing a cheering on lansdowne street around 1am when police began shooting rubber bullets in a relatively random fashion. one bullet struck a girl in the eye right near me, which proved to be a fatal wound. see this article. i ended up photographing this situation among other horrible acts of violence. i have chosen not to share the images of this young woman in respect to her family and graphic nature of the photo. but i do plan to use these pictures of this senseless loss of life as to prevent anything like this to happen again. this girl was NOT being violent or breaking the law in any way, but she died while others who lit cars on fire simply because they had a new york tag on it got nothing but a shove and were told to "go home". when will this go to far? there is a fine line between celebration and and breaking the law. i beg of my fellow boston residents to not let this happen during the world series or even again....fun can be had without breaking anything. and more so to stand up and say that the police officers were out of line thursday morning, excessive force was used on those who did not deserve it. and we want different tactics to be used in a situation like this. thank you.
