Everyone, especially cat and/or dog people, should read today's (Wednesday's) Questionable Content strip. If you're reading this after, say, 11 pm or so on Thursday (when the new strip is usually posted) click the "Previous" link at the top.

Almost as funny as the strip is the creator commentary on the righthand side.

In general, everyone should be reading this strip anyway. It's that good. I dare you to go the the first strip and read all the way to the present. I was hooked by strip 25.

Shoot. Really good-looking Jay Leno episode tonight- Deion Branch, Bill Bellicheck, and *coughavrillevignecoug*.... But I was up at 4am today, worked 13 hours overtime, and need to be up at 5am tomorrow for my regular 24....

Oh. And Sara's house if fucking huge. Especially the basement. The basement blows my mind like few things have.

All of a sudden I'm having these busy weeks. Fuckin' annoying. [Feb. 1st, 2005|02:02 am]
[mood | lethargic]

Monday: Recover from work on Sunday, lower urge to kill supervisor relax. [Ok, so maybe not so busy.]

Tuesday: Work at 4pm for 15 hours. Which means everything after 3pm on my Thursday 24 (the point at which I'll hit 40 hours for the week) will be overtime. Bwuahahaha.

Wednesday, 7/7:30am: Leave work, go to Kate's for breakfast.

Wednesday, when her mom comes home noonish: Go home and sleep.

Thursday, 7am: Work.

Friday, 7am: Leave work, race home for a nap.

Friday, noonish: Tentative lunch with Sean and Andy in Wootown.

Friday, evening: Night out in Wootown maybe, with a layover? No point in driving all the way home and then all the way back on:

Saturday, morning: Painting party at Sara's, I think?

Sunday, 8am: Work. Same supervisor as last week from 5pm-midnight.

[info]thelittlehound is right, whoever made that list needs a beating.

In other news, it's snowing again. Yeah, we really needed the extra 8 inches. The 4-foot snow drifts were really starting to sag in the...... 10 degree temperatures....

It's not stopping till tomorrow. Again. Right before I go to work. Again.

Interesting, if short, article on "The Therapy Reflex" in response to the tsunami disaster.

"This kind of approach is anathema to a swath of contemporary mental-health workers. Dubbed 'trauma tourists' by some mischievous colleagues of mine, they are quick to impose Western-style therapies without regard to victims' needs, their natural healing systems, or their very conception of what 'mental illnes' might be. 'This is not what a doctor should do," says Ganesan who has tried to talk agencies out of sending grief counselors.'"

I think half of what makes this article funny is the url itself.

Democratic Senator tells Europe: "Get over" Bush election.

These people seriously have nothing better to do on a weekday? Methinks they need to take Senator Biden's advice. If Kerry had won, I'd be pissed- but there's 5 million things I could possibly find to do that are more important, more meaningful, and less expensive than going to Washington DC on a sub-zero day to bitch and whine that I didn't get my way.

100 Years by Five for Fighting

"Every day's a new day...
15 there's still time for you
Time to buy and time to choose
Hey 15, there's never a wish better than this
When you only got 100 years to live"

2004 was about thinking and reflecting - but isn't every year?

General Notification [Jan. 1st, 2005|03:23 pm]
[mood | calm]

I recently (this week) switched cell phone carriers. One of the side effects of this is that my caller ID is not linked to the text-messaging feature. As such, when you send me a text message I have no idea who it is.

As a result, I would request for the sake of my sanity and timely replies to your messages, you hereafter "sign" your text messages when sending them to me. I know it'll probably be annoying for you but everyone will be happier in the end. I won't have to root through my cell's phonebook looking for your number, and you'll get a quick reply.

Thank you,

The Management

Ps- Happy New Year!

Craptastic weather, mm? [Dec. 28th, 2004|02:40 pm]
[mood | rejuvenated]

Define nerve-wracking: Transporting a 6-month old baby on an interstate highway covered with about 4 inches of unplowed snow. o.o;;;;

We did arrive safely however, no thanks the the Massachusetts DOT, or the hospital plow guy in Providence who made me stop, on a hill, so he could plow out the ambulance parking area.

Thank you to those who wished my partner Erin well in her sickiness. She's much better. ^_^

Christmasy stuff: copier/scanner/printer from the 'rents, plus an assload of clothes because my mother apparently decided she hates everything I wear. That 70's Show Season 1 DVD from Chris, which made me very happy. Old Navy sweater and engraved St. Florian medallion from Kate. (All together now: "Awwwww....")

Yesterday got to hang out with Josh for a while before he flew back to Alabama this morning. We met a boatload of URI people (most if whom I've met and befriended on past, similar occasions) at the Mews Tavern in Wakefield. The Mews is famous in Southern RI for a few things, like the tradition of writing something funny on a dollar bill and stapling it to the ceiling in the main barroom, their insane amount of beers and liquors to choose from, and the flippable signs on every table that say "NEED BEER" or "GOT BEER," depending on your situation. Very helpful if you're too drunk to summon a waitress. ^_~

After dinner we took over their new "Marilyn Monroe Room," which is upstairs and features comfy couches, loveseats, a plasma TV, a special martini menu (if you're like, a girl :-p), and a bar in the next room over. Apparently they're trying to do something approaching what the Boytnon did to themselves but not as severe a change since it was always kind of a respectable establishment to begin with, not just a get-shitfaced bar like the ol' B was. The Mews has made a clear deliniation between its restaraunt and its bar, but both types of patrons are welcome. The Boynton, on the otherhand, has olbiterated any indication that they want heavy drinkers in their establishment. Sure, they'll give you a bucket if you ask for it, but you feel like a criminal drinking it. -_- I mean come on, the place was given a glowing review by 50+ Avdocates.com for Christ's sake!!!

The only negative is the drive it takes to get there for most of the crew that we usually go with, considering that they've all now graduated URI, which is only about 5 miles away. For comparison, the Mews is about 30-40 minutes from my house depending on the time of day. Still, if any of my out-of-state crew ever wants to sample some of the multitude of beers and other drinks, I would be willing to put together an excursion.

Luckily due to our sheer numbers (12) we didn't have to share the room. Might have been a different situation if URI was in session and/or we went on a weekend night (when it's packed to the walls). It was good seeing everybody again (especially Josh, haven't seen him since he went to 'Bama), plus met one or two new people, including our friend Chris's new (read: first) girlfriend! She seems very nice, Chris seems very happy, and nobody (at least in the URI crew) deserves it more than he does. ^_^

Anyway. Gotta go get dressed, I accepted a 12-hour OT shift tonight starting at 6.....

Edit: Almost forgot- if you catch me on AIM you can take my quiz, link is located in my profile. No, I'm not posting it here.

Don't mind me........... [Dec. 22nd, 2004|01:53 am]
[mood | cynical]

Do you ever feel like breaking down?
Do you ever feel out of place?
Like somehow you just don't belong
And no one understands you

Do you ever wanna run away?
Do you lock yourself in your room?
With the radio on turned up so loud
That no one hears you screaming

No you don't know what it's like
When nothing feels alright
You don't know what it's like to be like me

To be hurt
To feel lost
To be left out in the dark
To be kicked
When you're down
To feel like you've been pushed around
To be on the edge of breaking down
When no one's there to save you
No you don't know what it's like

Welcome to my life

Do you wanna be somebody else?
Are you sick of feeling so left out?
Are you desperate to find something more
Before your life is over

Are you stuck inside a world you hate?
Are you sick of everyone around?
With the big fake smiles and stupid lies
While deep inside you're bleeding

No you don't know what it's like
When nothing feels alright
You don't know what it's like to be like me

To be hurt
To feel lost
To be left out in the dark
To be kicked
When you're down
To feel like you've been pushed around
To be on the edge of breaking down
When no one's there to save you
No you don't know what it's like

Welcome to my life

No one ever lies straight to your face
And no one ever stabbed you in the back
You might think I'm happy
But I'm not gonna be ok

Everybody always gave you what you wanted
You never had to work it was always there
You don't know what it's like
What it's like

To be hurt
To feel lost
To be left out in the dark
To be kicked
When you're down
To feel like you've been pushed around
To be on the edge of breaking down
When no one's there to save you
No you don't know what it's like

To be hurt
To feel lost
To be left out in the dark
To be kicked
When you're down
To feel like you've been pushed around
To be on the edge of breaking down
When no one's there to save you
No you don't know what it's like

Welcome to my life

Yeah, so I accepted an offer from work for 13 hours of overtime tomorrow.

Apparently I'm the ONLY person who hadn't seen tomorrow's weather forcast when I accepted that slot.

That plus the location and time of the shift pretty much forced me to sleep at work for the night.

And I'll probably smell when I get there. >.<

Which also means (thank you for the call to remind me Dad) that I have to reschedule/cancel my echocardiogram that was supposed to be tomorrow. I predict a snowball's chance in hell of getting it done this week.

Grar.

Also, Kate helpfully reminded me last night that in 2 weeks I'm going to get older. How thrilled do I look?? YEAH! -_-;

A.C.L.U.'s Search for Data on Donors Stirs Privacy Fears

By STEPHANIE STROM

The American Civil Liberties Union is using sophisticated technology to collect a wide variety of information about its members and donors in a fund-raising effort that has ignited a bitter debate over its leaders' commitment to privacy rights.

Some board members say the extensive data collection makes a mockery of the organization's frequent criticism of banks, corporations and government agencies for their practice of accumulating data on people for marketing and other purposes.

Daniel S. Lowman, vice president for analytical services at Grenzebach Glier & Associates, the data firm hired by the A.C.L.U., said the software the organization is using, Prospect Explorer, combs a broad range of publicly available data to compile a file with information like an individual's wealth, holdings in public corporations, other assets and philanthropic interests.

The issue has attracted the attention of the New York attorney general, who is looking into whether the group violated its promises to protect the privacy of its donors and members.

"It is part of the A.C.L.U.'s mandate, part of its mission, to protect consumer privacy," said Wendy Kaminer, a writer and A.C.L.U. board member. "It goes against A.C.L.U. values to engage in data-mining on people without informing them. It's not illegal, but it is a violation of our values. It is hypocrisy."
