FAQ Question #50

» What can I do to help stop my journal from ending up on search engines?

There is no guaranteed way to stop your journal from being indexed by search engines. However, you can make it tougher to be indexed by checking the "Block Robots/Spiders from Indexing your journal" option found in the Personal Info page.

If you check this option, your User Info and journal pages will be updated to include META tags which tell search engine robots to not index your pages. Additionally, if you have a paid account, a robots.txt file will be added to your paid URL (such as http://exampleusername.livejournal.com/). Not all robots respect the rules, but most of the popular search sites' robots do.

If your journal has been listed in a search engine, you will need to contact the search engine to have it removed from their listings.

However, even if your journal gets indexed by a search engine, you can take measures to make sure that your personal information is not available from the search engine results. You can do this by making your entries Friends-only or Private. Additionally, if you make sure that none of your Public entries contain identifying information about you, you will increase the chances of your journal remaining anonymous.

You also have the ability to not display your e-mail address and other personal information on your User Info page. Since some search engines can store this data, you may wish to only display this data to people on your Friends list. You can set these options at the Personal Info page.
