Does anyone know of a good place listing explanations and practical resolutions for Stop 0x00 errors and other BSODs? I see so many every day that I'm not familiar with, and it would be helpful to find a place with actual solutions, since the MS Knowledge Base tends be overly specific or just plain uninformative. |

Metanoia. Magic lives in Glen Helen | Jan. 30th, 2005 @ 06:52 pm |

They say there is no such thing as perfection. Today is in the running to break that trueism.
I've not showered in 3 days. I've got an intermittant cough. Babi told me she's officially dating whatever dude it was she liked better than me.
But it's water under the bridge. It honestly fazes me not at all. This weekend...words cannot describe the feelings that are erupting inside of me. I don't understand why I didn't feel this when I was a retreatant. Strike that, I do, but it would take too long to write out for a guy running on 5 hours of sleep out of the last 48. Maybe it's an endorphin high, I don't know, but I really feel like I've gone through one amazing spiritual experience. Previous Metanoians, back me up on this. Matt, I presumed to pass along you, Megan and Joy's love to the retreatants . I'm gonna bet you're ok with that. Tell the girls I was thinking of them.
Normally, I'd post such a subject with a dumbed down, sarcastic comment, cause I'd be embarassed by such mushy thoughts. But this is too powerful. I hope you all are well. I'm damn good.
PS- Matt, do you remember Jane Rombach?

Last one for the night. I just wanted to recommend Matisyahu. The site's farked, cause he was on Carson Daly last night. He's the only hasidic reggae artist I've ever heard of. Very good, very surprising.

I have a particularly stubborn subject at work just now that I'm hoping for some input on. It's a Win2k Pro Desktop, about 3 years old. Upon startup, I receive messages that some system files are corrupted and need to be be replaced, and I need to insert the Win2k CD to replace the files. Inserting the CD gets you past the notices with a minimum of fuss, but the problem reappears upon restart. Adding to the fun was Symantec AV's refusal to un/re-install. We have an automated installer for the most recent version that should remove whatever version is currently installed, and it seemed to get most of the original install, but the new version was nowhere to be found. Retries garnered you errors, but nothing useful. Finally had to perform a manual removal of all previous installs, and fell back to the second most recent version, which installed, but would not update. Manually downloading the updates seemed to work fine. At first I thought the installer service was hosed, but obviously, I was able to install progs. Oh, also, the event log was corrupt. I've run chkdsk, but to no good. Nothing seems to faze this thing.
I'm also blocked from getting Windows Updates. I give you the error, but I dozed off writing this twice already; I just can't remember.
Any help at all is appreciated.

Sadly, those of you who know me well know this is utter shiat. I actually did very little. I think I slept more than anything. So what's up this year? Well, spirits for one. Rent, for another.
Just.one.final.semester.left. Then, I'm scott free. I still am of the opinion that I'm doing the year of service after I graduate. I'm leaning towards Americorp. Guess I should apply now...
So what's up this year? School is actually down. Only seven hours. Couple of big caveats, though. First, OPS 480 is with Dr. Kanet. Dr. Kanet is a swine. I despise this man as a teacher. As a human, I find him mildly irritating, but the fact that I have to be evaluated by a man utterly unable to perform his own job, despite having a doctorate, makes me freaking ill. I quite literally get heartburn just being around him. I haven't exchanged two words with the man since OPS 301 a year and a half ago, and he has returned us to where we left off: him blathering inanely, pretending he's making sense to some poor bastard somewhere, and me having my wonderful stress twitches in the corner. It usually takes me half a semester to develop facial tics in response to stress, and it usually involves multiple midterms. Shitforbrains managed to initiate full involuntary-left-eye-blinkings by the end of the first class. This man is more than my kryptonite. He's...whatever it is that makes Superman go batshit, that's what he is. Lex Luthor in bed with Lois Lane or something. Ew, I just associated sex with Dr. Kanet. Ick.
So on to better news. OPS 495, my senior project. My real senior project. Because the first one (for my Entrepreneurship degree) was almost rinkydink in comparison. My project is with NCR. We're modeling the order submission/selection process for them. Apparently the process has become needlessly bloated due to over-planning, and it needs paring down. The project carries a real-world, multi-million dollar value, both in saved costs and revenue returned from elimination of wasted time (:ahem:, non-value-added, non-selling time, to be syntactically accurate). Now, for those of us (yes, oddly enough, I'm still in this group) who don't really value money above all else, this is semi-interesting, at best. My big thing is that this is a big challenge, a bigger responsibility, and most importantly, my teachers judged that I could do it. I like that. I like it very much. It's cheesy, and I think it comes from reading way too damn much medieval-based fiction during my formative years, but earning the respect of teachers that I respect...yea, that does it for me. Can't say much more about the project, cause o' the NDA, but rest assured, it'll be nice. O! One last thing...they've offered free Green Belt Training in 6 Sigma. That won't mean much to a lot of you. Six Sigma is a process control method that basically allows you to minimize defects in your production, whatever your product is; could be bon-bons, cellphones or even cleared checks (6sig can be applied to services, too). The important thing is that NCR's 6 Sigma program is well regarded, and 6sig is highly sought after these days. I know of one instance in which NCR Green Belt training made a $15,000/yr difference in a man's salary. I'm sure that's an outlier, but damn, it'd be nice to not live check to check anymore. If I'm lucky, I'll get hired for similar money without having to do the 6sig work; cause Six Sigma is freaking boring work, man. It's also one of those annoying management fads, but it's pretty vital stuff to a number of organizations at this point.
I think I'm bragging a little. That's new. Well, it's about time I had something worth bragging about, dang it!
Moving on, the weekend of the 28th is Metanoia. I'm really looking forward to it. We're going to knock these kids for a loop. I'm always constantly amazed by the power of this retreat. It seriously changes you. I saw some amazing stuff happen on that retreat. What I like about it is that it's non-invasive. At Metanoia, though at times we push people in their comfort zones, is more about inviting people out on their own. And man, do people respond! There was one student when I went, who was quite vocal about not wanting to be there the first night. She stayed, and by Sunday, she was crying at the thought of leaving. Every retreat is contrived to some extent, by necessity. But Metanoia's the most honest of all of the retreats that I've ever been involved in -- and considering how many I led in high school, that's saying something. I'm so proud to be a part of that family.
Aww...too touchy feely for you? Eh, tough.
Time for bed. I must at least give a shot at arriving to work on time tomorrow.
PS- Does anybody know how I can resize the width of the text column on my friends page? I'm about to return to the old/ugly blue format if I can't fit more on the page. This is just annoying.
And finally, in solidarity with the wonderful folks who brought back my sad little conduit to the world...

To all the really random people who have been friending me lately...um...who are you? Injakra I know, but there are like four people I'm completely unaware of. Where'd ya'll come from?
If I don't add you back, don't take it personally. I'm paring down my friends list, as it's gotten waaay out of control. I might make a "random people I don't know" filter, but I'm not entirely excited about the concept, considering all the time I'm going to have to waste cleaning this thing up as it is.
PS, if anyone wants to get me a cable package with the Food network, you can have my innocence. Yea, I said it. Iron Chef America is great stuff. PPS, Not valid if you're male. Sorry, I know.

FLCL is the craziest anime I've ever seen.
Jimmy Dean commercials amuse me greatly.
Old school Saturday Night Live is infinitely better than the current crop. Tina Fay is the only saving grace on that show these days. And I don't care if I spelled her name wrong.
I should stop staying up all night. I need to get more done in the daytime so that I'll go to bed on time, I guess.

If you get a chance, watch "The Natural History of the Chicken" on PBS. It's damn hilarious, and surprisingly interesting. It'll make you think twice about the chicken you eat, too. Eek, those factories are disturbing.

( What the heck. )
So I have contacts now! Yea, it's kinda cool. Hell, half of you have never seen me without my glasses on. I look hot!
Ha. Ok, really, it's neat. Kinda peeved at the eye doctor, though. He really didn't give me a chance to ask about different kinds, or anything. Just kind of railroaded me. Not very happy about that. I go back in 2 or 3 weeks for a checkup, so I'll interogate him then.
I got a laptop, too. My folks tricked me into helping them pick it out, telling me it was for my mom. We left to get lunch and to give them time to install more memory, and my mom hands me a warranty. I handed it back, thinking it was hers, and she's like "No, that's yours." Schmucks. So yea, my folks rock. This was my graduation gift early, apparently. I guess Tom got a nice bonus or something. Of course, I broke the thing in the first night. Well, I didn't really break it, but I wanted to put XP Pro on the machine, but my copy of it was scratched at some point, so some files were corrupted. I've reinstalled Home Edition, but I'm not going to put anything on it. I'll reformat with Pro tomorrow at the office.
My Dad (biological) has been kind of pissing me and my sister off recently. He and I talk every 4 months or so, mainly because after about four months, I get fed up and think, "Jeez, it's been 4 months since my father and I said a word to eachother, guess I'll call him again." My sister hears from him a lot less. He calls her once a year. Once. Just before Christmas, he calls to see what she wants. That's it. Same for me, actually. That's the only time he ever actually calls me. Come on, Dad, you can do better than that! So this year, we went passive aggressive. I didn't call him on Thanksgiving, and I didn't call him this Christmas, either. Dude can call me if he wants to, let's just see if he really even wants to talk to me.

God, I should seriously get a normal sleep cycle.
Before I finally shove off, I just want to ask, because I know my Daytonian friends have been involved in a bunch of random stuff, can anyone think of a good service project that could be arranged in approx. one month in Dayton? I'm in charge of arranging for our Metanoia team's service project, and I'm not really up on all that sort of thing in our area. I have about 21 people, give or take a few due to the inevitable scheduling conflicts.
Any thoughts?
Also, anybody know how much catering would charge to loan out those thermos/dispensor thingies that you use to keep coffee or hot chocolate warm? I'm thinking we could do a hot drink stand in the ghetto sometime during January(I'm also in charge of publicity).
