  Axis of Evil Wannabees
by John Cleese

Bitter after being snubbed for membership in the "Axis of Evil," Libya, China and Syria today announced that they had formed the "Axis of Just as Evil," which they said would be more evil than that stupid Iran-Iraq-North Korea axis President Bush warned of in his State of the Union address.

Axis of Evil members, however, immediately dismissed the new Axis as having, for starters, a really dumb name.

"Right. They are just as evil . . . in their dreams!" declared North Korean leader Kim Jong-il.

"Everybody knows we're the best evils . . . best at being evil . . .we're the best."

Diplomats from Syria denied they were jealous over being excluded, although they conceded they did ask if they could join the Axis of Evil. "They told us it was full," said Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

"An axis can't have more than three countries," explained Iraqi President Saddam Hussein.

"This is not my rule, it's tradition. In World War II you had Germany, Italy, and Japan in the evil Axis. So, you can only have three...and a secret handshake. Ours is wickedly cool."

International reaction to Bush's Axis of Evil declaration was swift, as within minutes, France surrendered. Elsewhere, peer-conscious nations rushed to gain triumvirate status in what has become a game of geopolitical chairs.

Cuba, Sudan and Serbia announced that they had formed the "Axis of Somewhat Evil," forcing Somalia to join with Uganda and Myanmar in the "Axis of Occasionally Evil," while Bulgaria, Indonesia and Russia established the "Axis of
Not So Much Evil Really as Just Generally Disagreeable."

With the criteria suddenly expanded and all the desirable clubs filling up, Sierra Leone, El Salvador, and Rwanda applied to be called the "Axis of Countries That Aren't the Worst But Certainly Won't Be Asked to Host the Olympics".

Canada, Mexico and Australia formed the "Axis of Nations That Are Actually Quite Nice But Secretly Have Some Nasty Thoughts About America," while Scotland, New Zealand and Spain established the "Axis of Countries That Want Sheep to Wear Lipstick."

"That's not a threat, really, just something we like to do," said Scottish Executive First Minister Jack McConnell.

While wondering if the other nations of the world weren't perhaps making fun of him, a cautious Bush granted approval for most axis, although he rejected the establishment of the "Axis of Countries Whose Names End in
'Guay," accusing one of its members of filing a false application.

Officials from Paraguay, Uruguay, and Chadguay denied the charges.

Israel, meanwhile, insisted it didn't want to join any Axis, but privately world leaders said that's only because no one asked them.

Nah, it's not even that interesting. But how else am I going to hook you into reading? Today is a co-worker's bridal shower, the whole office is invited. I feel under an ENORMOUS amount of pressure to get this girl something. Lists were circulated or her bridal registry, suggestions made, etc. But *I* made a cake. An evil cake. A chocolate torte, which is so moist that it's seriously like a sponge soaked with butter and gooey chocolate goodness. I gave up on the velvet glaze (as I am a COMPLETE freak and went to the mall last night for some Goddess-unknown reason, more on that later), and made a really simple mousse. In honor of the occasion, I used the *good* vanilla (the Madagascar Bourbon, and if you don't know the difference, you are a shameless heathen and I must bake for you sometime). The mousse was fun, but I had a moment of panic.

(brief interlude for a chocolate lesson)

Melted chocolate does NOT like small amounts of water. Large amounts are fine, but small amounts will cause your melted chocolate to "seize", and become grainy, nasty and completely unlike chocolate. Therefore when you are working with melted chocolate, you must be sure that your hands and all utensils are dry.

(lesson over)

SO in making this chocolate mousse, you melt 6 ounces of your chocolate of choice (or whatever you have in the house because your boyfriend ate all the good Swiss bittersweet), and then you add 1/4 cup tepid water. Yikes. The directions say to have an extra tablespoon of water on hand in case it starts to seize. (Once chocolate has a seizure it can NEVER be rescued. It's garbage.) So I put about a tbsp of water in a small measuring cup and quickly added the 1/4 cup I already had. The chocolate started to seize, ack! So I added that other tbsp, and lo and behold, the chocolate recovered. Amazing how such a little amount can make a difference, but there it is.

Wow, that was a pretty pointless story. Let's see, what else...

I thought it was going to be warmer today, so I wore my new yellow short-sleeved top. It's not. It's only going to get to 44 or so. But I was out the door before I noticed. And I got chocolate on it. Oh, that's the other neat thing about this cake. I pulled out the last of my chocolate modeling clay from the freezer and made chocolate roses. They look AWESOME! I wish I had a camera.

Going out tonight to Big Fish with friends, I love that place. Now, if I can just not gorge on bread and oil...

Well, dearies, I suppose I should find some work to do. I'm off like a prom dress.

Name that song and win my undying devotion.

Anyway, here I am at work, yet again. The chronically late girl has just shown up (at 9:25 am), the owner of the company has already yelled at me (He always yells. I cannot begin to express to you how very odd this man is) and I have NOTHING to do. Whee. I'm going to go check on my Star Trek writing group stuff.

Organic Standards - Important!!
Friday, the 28th of March, 2003 at: 09:45 AM
In the final hours of developing the spending bill, House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert inserted a provision that would allow livestock producers to label their meat, milk, and eggs as organic, even if they were not fed organic feed as is mandated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Organic Standards. According to the NY Times, Fiedale Farms, a Georgia chicken processing company had asked for the provision. Despite the fact that over $10 billion of organic business a year is following the National Organic Standards, one company that can't follow the rules, has threatened to weaken the standards for all! Hmmm...
Monday, the 24th of March, 2003 at: 12:15 PM
Compared against a baseline index of approximately 5,000 'standard' responses, your responses indicate the following:

Diagnostic Overview:

Your apparent normality conceals a hotbed of twisted desires and passions, straining to break free so you can rape and pillage at will (just like everyone else). You have an apparent mistrust of your family and friends, as well as authority figures and co-workers. Hmmmm, maybe you're not so normal after all. People who answer as you did often like to masturbate excessively, sometimes in public.

Long-Term Prognosis:

You will need intensive therapy to succeed in living a normal life, however this also means you may make an excellent politician. Your answers clearly indicate you need a better wardrobe; this is often because of micro-manifestations of the id, conflicting with your unconcious mind (the one you use at work).

music: "War" - Edwin Starr
War
Edwin Starr

Oh no-there's got to be a better way
Say it again
There's got to be a better way-yeah
What is it good for?
*War has caused unrest
Among the younger generation
Induction then destruction
Who wants to die?
War-huh
What is it good for?
Absolutely nothing
Say it again
War-huh
What is it good for?
Absolutely nothing
Yeah

War-I despise
'Cos it means destruction
Of innocent lives
War means tears
To thousands of mothers how
When their sons go off to fight
And lose their lives
I said
War-huh
It's an enemy of all mankind
No point of war
'Cos you're a man
*(Repeat)

Give it to me one time-now
Give it to me one time-now
War has shattered
Many young men's dreams
We've got no place for it today
They say we must fight to keep our freedom
But Lord, there's just got to be a better way
It ain't nothing but a heartbreaker
War
Friend only to the undertaker
War
War
War-Good God, now
Now
Give it to me one time now
Now now
What is it good for?

Why do people block out the incorrect address on RTS (return to sender) items? I'm getting catalog returns and I can't correct our database on some of them because the dorks have either put another label over the old one, or blacked it out in magic marker. Argh.

What is the frelling point? You're going to continue to get things from us if you do this, idjit.

If anyone can name that quote, I will love you forever. Anyway, work is tedious. I just got a snotty email from our mailroom because I just did a mail run and didn't coordinate my labels with my letters. (I thought they were in reverse order, though granted I didn't tell them that. It's also the first mail run I've ever done here, so excuse me.) They "do a good job and take pride in what they do." yadda yadda yadda. Bite me.

I have 1 hour and 40 minutes left before I can leave. My wipers are still broken, either they are on (fuse in) or off (fuse out). I AM IN A PISSY MOOD. I really, really, really just want to go home, have pizza and beer until I'm so stuffed and drunk I can't move. Really.

I think I have SAD. I think ANYONE would have SAD in this winter. I think I've lost my travel vouchers from xmas, which means I've lost $500, basically. Good news, Scott found my new Bruce Lee book last night under some catalogs (because we are house o' catalogs.) whine whine whine, bitch bitch bitch. I'm annoying myself, so I'm going to go.

I hate posting at work, but I can't seem to bring myself to do this at home. I've had a nasty cold for the last week, culminating in laryngitis for about 3-4 days. Today is the first day I've been able to speak normally since Wednesday afternoon.

I am so tired of winter. More tired than I remember ever being before. I cleaned the kitchen yesterday, not because I had the energy to do so, but because I had to do *something*. I'm so tired of the cold, the white. I can't see the beauty in winter anymore this season, and I usually really do love winter. I want spring and color, but more than that, I want warmth. I have felt cold in my bones for ages, unless I'm sitting in a warm tub.

Scott still hasn't found a job, it's a very rough market, as many of you know first-hand. He's got a couple of leads though, so I'm hoping one of them (at least) will pan out. Not much else to say, really. Perhaps I'll post from home later this week. If I ever get warm...
