Parent's 60th birthday party |
[25 Apr 2005|01:15pm] |
Hi,
My parents are turning 60 next year. So, I hear that it's the kids that are supposed to throw a huge birthday party for their parents.
So, what I want to know is:
What are the related customs? How much should I expect to spend? What exactly is this about? Who's all coming? Is this a dinner party thing? Band? Do I also get them something special too? Should all the kids help or is this a boy/oldest thing?
I have no idea where to start, but I'd love to do something special for my folks so I really appreciate your help. Thanx.

i came across something about dual-citizenships and i was wondering ..
if a child is born in america to a mother who is a citizen of south korea, does that child have a dual-citizenship with south korea & america? i know the child automatically is an american citizen .. but ..

I find this really amusing.
My dog is completely oblivious to the kimchi stain she got on the back of her neck.
Yes. Many jokes can be made.

While not a topic specific to Korea (Japan is probabally does this twice as much), it certainly is something I wonder... Does anyone know where they find the foreign kids featured in any number of Korean (and Japanese) music videos? Considering the population abroad, you'd think they'd be somewhat difficult to come by. There aren't relly all that many white or black people living there to begin with. Of those, not so many have children. Of those, not as many have children that aren't mixed with Asian. Of those, not so many (I'd imagine) pursue bringing their kids into the entertainment industry. That being said, it seems like every video that has them seems to have an entire horde of new ones that I've never seen in any other KMV.
Are these "Army Brats" that are over seas with their families? Are they imported especially for these productions? Do they make them in factories (joking)? I don't quite understand it. Halfies would be a bit more understandable considering the great number of males that have Asian women fetishes, yet the ones that are featured are usually bright blonde, ghost pale white with blue eyes, very dark skinned with stereotypical 'nappy' hair for black people, etc., thus suggesting that they are not of mixed asian-(something else) race.
This isn't intended to be a joke -- I'm genuinely curious on the matter.

Edit: Sorry --- you have to be able to identify the countries' names, which are the captions of each picture. But it's a good exercise if you're a beginner at Korean, like me.

The motto for one would-be South Korean driver likely is "if at first you don't succeed, then try, try again another 271 times."
Seo Sang-moon passed the academic part of his driver's license examination on his 272nd attempt earlier this week.
The repairman, from a small town in the southeastern part of the county who will soon turn 70, said he was illiterate and used the test process to teach himself the rules of the road because he could not read them in a manual.
Since the oral exam was launched, Seo took the test as often as he could, paying about $1,000 in fees along the way. Each failure taught him a little more, and after 271 attempts, he was able to get the minimum score needed to pass the academic test.
Test officials were thrilled to see Seo pass.
"He has been coming here for more than five years and we regard him almost as being one of the family," an official from the exam office said by telephone.
Seo said he was preparing for his road test, and was discussing with his wife what kind of car to buy once he get his license. "Driving seems a bit hard. But after trying 271 times to pass the oral exam, what do I have to be afraid of?," Seo said.

hey! it's been raining real hard here in portland,... i was wondering if you guys mostly go out to have korean food, or do you make it yourself? i am actually vegan now, well i have been a vegetarian for many years, but then i decided to fully become a vegan about a year ago or so. despite a general vegan diet though, i allow myself fish every once in a while. sushi never tasted so good until i actually had it with raw fish. but yeah, so no bulgogi(sp?) for me. i love korean food though, korean and japanese are my favorites. yummy! here are some pictures... that delicious looking food was prepared by my dear mother when i had gone home to germany for a visit. my mom gave me this wondeful custom-made korean dress. it's georgous.

Holy shit.
My baby did it!!!!
My 95 Hyundai Accent did 130km today!!!!!! I can't believe it. I'm almost closed to tears. My baby is way stronger and faster than I give credit for (I mean let's be honest. Of course, I was scared the shitless of her breaking down in the middle of freaking highway. And I smell burned rubbers when I got home, but my baby made me proud)
Ahhh today is going to be the most memorable day of my life.
This makes my Accent the hottest car that I've ever own.
Yeah! H Y U N D A I!!!

soooo...just wondering if anyone is attending the University of Washington. i got accepted and am going there this fall. yay. college.
in fact, anyone from washington? oh and question. i was thinking of transferring to Seoul University maybe next year. my dad told me it's the best college. my mom told me to go to a different college because it's very competitive. besides, she said: "your korean is not good enough to get good grades in college. it is very hard!" i guess my mom came out of the best women's private school in korea at the time(name is something like 이대 or something? means purple flower it think...i can't remember...) anyway, suggestions?

i'm just going to speak whats on my mind.
People these days just piss me off. they think just because i'm korean, i'm all brains and no muscle. especially in my diesel shop. my class was tearing down an engine. i ask politely if i could loosen a main cap. they all looked at me and one said "your too weak to get one loose." i'm thinking to myself, "did he just say what i think he said?!" at that point i just wanted to prove them wrong, so i make some smart ass remark because it took two of them just to get on bolt off. then they finally let me try. i walked up and in my first attempt "pop!" the bolt came loose. i was like "whos weak now freshman?" i finally got the respect i deserved.
has this ever happen to any of you?
