Mmmmm, done my set at work. Don't go back until the night of May 4th.

Work was pretty uneventful, although really busy. For all the time I spend bitching about night shifts, day shifts just eat my soul. 12 hours of pretty much non-stop multi-multitasking.

Got paid last night, and my paycheck completely blew up. I'm assuming I got that quarterly bonus my boss reccomended me for.

I got a new phone the other day, it's a "Hiptop", also carried/branded in the US by T-Mobile as the "SideKick". It's a pretty cool little thing. [info]supersat's been showing me some cool developer-type things on it. Unlimited webbrowsing, email, AIM, phone airtime, and other goodies for $60/mo CAD ... not bad if you ask me.

Other than working, my life's been filled with sleeping and some socializing. Last week was CanSecWest / core04 ... I wanted to go, but I ended up not going to the actual con, just going to meet with friends and stuff after-hours.

Anyways, yeah. This is an update for the people who say I don't update enough :)

So yeah, went in to the office today and met with the CTO ... he had final say on my employment, and he passed me with flying colors :)

First shift is tonight, 7:30pm-7:30am at the NOC. Went in, signed papers, got all my accounts made, got my authentication token (wtf, SO COOL!!!), submitted by biometric scans for the locks at the NOC, and met all the dev staff and project managers.

Now, I have to take a minute and gush about how cool the RSA SecurID hardware tokens are ... that's just rad. The quick and dirty is that for any type of remote access, you need to use the RSA shit. So, you username is whatever, then you have your password, and then you have to tack on the digits that read on your token ... the digits on the token re-generate every 30 60 seconds on both the cards and the authentication server, and the "token" digits are only good for one use ... so if someone managed to sniff your password, not only would it not work if they tried because it's one-use, but it'd change in 30 60 seconds anyways ... that's quite possibly the coolest IT/Tech thing I've seen in a long time.

Word.

At New York's Kennedy airport today, an individual (later discovered to be a public school teacher) was arrested trying to board a flight while in possession of a ruler, a protractor, a setsquare, a slide rule, and a calculator.

At a morning press conference, Attorney General John Ashcroft said he believes the man is a member of the notorious Al-Gebra movement. He is being charged by the FBI with carrying weapons of math instruction.

"Al-gebra is a fearsome cult," Ashcroft said. "They desire average solutions by means and extremes and sometimes go off on tangents in a search of absolute value. They use secret code names like 'x' and 'y' and refer to themselves as 'unknowns,' but we have determined they belong to a common denominator of the axis of medieval evil with coordinates in every country.

"As the Greek philanderer Isosceles used to say, there are three sides to every triangle," Ashcroft declared.

Asked to comment, President Bush said, "If God had wanted us to have better weapons of math instruction, He would have given us more fingers and toes."

Attorney General Ashcroft said, "As our Great Leader would say, read my ellipse. Here is one principle that he is uncertainty of: although they continue to multiply, their days are numbered as the hypotenuse tightens around their necks."

So there was a shooting 1/2 a block down the street from me tonight. At first I went out there not knowing what the hell was going on ... just that there were 18 police cars (I counted), 4 ambulances, an ambulance supervisor, a firetruck, and numerous transit authority guys around. The cops blocked off a 2 block radius of the restaurant where it happened (My Hyong Restaurant, a known Vietnamese gang hangout) and were going into all the local stores and grabbing their surveilance tapes and interviewing people who had condos looking onto Victoria Drive. I overheard one cop saying to another that it was a shooting, and they were taking people away, blah blah blah.

So yeah, through connections in the hospital, I've learned that there was one DOA on scene, one guy was seriously injured and taken to hospital (who died shortly after arriving), and the owner of the restaurant was taken to hospital for a gunshot to the ass.

I took some pictures about an hour after it all happened, and they are here.

Welcome to the East Side.

So, I just booked my road test for my class 7 license. For those of you not familiar with BC's Graduated Licensing Program, there are 3 steps to getting a license.

1) Get a Learner's Permit (Class 7L) ... simple like 40 question paper test. Retrictions are no more than one passenger, can only drive between 5am and midnight, zero body alcohol content, display the 7"x5" magnetic red "L" sign on your car, and must be accompanied by a person over 19 holding a valid Class 5 license. You have to have this for 6 months (now 1 year). Cost is $15 for the test, $10 for the card if you pass. I've had mine for 4 years :)

2) After you finish the learner's stage, you go for a road test for your Class 7 license. Restrictions are the same as the 7L, except you can have 2 passengers, and you don't need a supervisor. This stage lasts for 18 months (2 years now). The sign you have to display is now a 7"x5" green "N" (Novice) sign. Cost is $35 for the road test, and $75 (!!!!!) for your license if you pass. This is what I've just booked ... $110? jesus christ.

3) After you've had your "N" for 18/24 months, you go for your normal Class 5 license road test. This is your normal, all-around license.

So yeah, it used to be 2 years to get to a class 5, now it's 3 years. The kicker is that $75 license issue fee. Ugh.

My appointment is for September 17th, at 1pm in Burnaby. I would have had to wait until November for an appointment in Vancouver (Point Grey).

Let's hope I have $110 by then :)
