wax poetics is such a bad ass magazine time a million. i spent a good majority of my evening at work tripping out on the range and quality of the content.
this day has been one long rewarding good time.
many a good conversation was had and that seems to be a vital part of my survival from here on out for optimal operation.

in order to combat missing my nine am class like i did last semester, i do all that i can to force myself out of bed, assemble a breakfast of animal crackers in my hoodie pocket, and wander off to enterprise. however in all that awesome forcing of the wills i had forgoten that my professor said there would be no class today. i only remembered this when i arrived at class, confronted with an empty room.
MORE SLEEP FOR ME!

2:46 am - funky motherfucking worms
|
dear world-
school has started again and the reading is going to be crazy but well worth it. i plan on getting my learn on this semester. however the neverending battle between music and school wages on. of course if i didn't waste so much time online i'd probably have time for more but i'm slowly working on that. there's a better being bouncing 'round the area, once of six thousand split personalities...
jimmy smith's ill ass organ playing is breaking my train of thought.
i really enjoy this music thing a lot and since i should be reading capital instead of rediscovering a box of fortyfives from under my bed, here are some quotes collected in the wild world of the tower record frontlines concerning the subject of music that i find amusing.
we had to deal with the wrongful notion that music could be available for nothing. But the good news is that interest in music is stronger than ever. -clive davis chairman/ceo of bmg north america.
my philosophy is that we are all human beings. it really doesn't matter where you are from or your background. if you get hit, it hurts, if you tell a funny joke, you laugh. that's the beauty of music: you can share emotions. -dj krush.
i don't know where the ideas are coming from. i don't even realize i have ideas. it's like asking "why are you hungry every day?" that's just what you are as a human being. you're hungry, you eat. you want to create, you want to feel, you want to be loved... it just happens. that's probably the only difference between an artist and a person that does work that needs to be done. an artist is doing a job that he gives himself. he is the only one who can tell himself what to do. and in another job, someone else is tell you what to do. there is something that has to be done and if you don't do it, someone else will. in art, you find that thing in your heart that needs to be done and if you don't do, it no one does it. then it gets stuck. and this is why you actually do it. -jan st warner of mouse on mars.
ps. i've noticed over the last couple days that my notebooks i tend to write in have lyrics to would be sars songs spanned acrossed their pages. it's interesting to think about. there is also much music and great awesome fun times to be had in the semester just beginning...

3:41 am - more battling laptop styles...
|
as told by the people behind the event:
The fall out of the future begins now
Question: What happens when technology becomes dirt cheep, all the software you would ever need ends up at your fingertips and the entire catalog of recorded sound through human history is free for your taking & manipulating? Answer: The Midatlantic Laptop Battle! On February 12th, a diverse group of technically proficient laptop jockeys will square off at DC 9 for one of the most challenging cutting edge cultural phenomenon’s sweeping the nation. The battle revolves of contestants using only their laptop soundcard to musically outperform each other in a series of elimination rounds. Judged by a panel of prominent music industry professionals on performance, originality, sound quality, vibe, and crowd reaction. The outcome of each battle is decided out of a total score of 10 in all categories. This sonic melee promises to be an unprecedented unpredictable night of high drama, high-tech hijinx, and even higher volume. Modeled after DMC DJ battles, the laptop battles began last year on the west coast spear headed by Kris Moon of the Fourth city arts collective. Moon himself has been collaborating with negativespace.org to bring the largest yet, of these battles to the east coast. This will be an event representative of the music technology scenes from the entire mid Atlantic region. With contestants from as far way as Philly and Richmond converging on dc for this show of sonic prowess. A number of styles and sounds are sure to represented. Catch it before the RIAA catches us! Feb12th the battle begins at 9pm.
they talk it up so much that i don't even care how nervous i am or whichever, this is goina be hella cool regardless.
come see it even IF sage francis is playing in baltimore.
and people from far away should come to because this is an epic event of the mid atlantic region. it concerns all those from near and afar interested in NOISES (yes sometimes for noises sake) NONE THE LESS EPICNESS IS AWESOMENESS!
that is all.

i am back in fairfax. the crazy aprilian weather in january has given me the most awful headache. slowly i am unpacking and making my way towards eating something good and having the record station setup in the room. i got my second turntable today. i sill need to get a needle.
also, i begin working at tower again tomorrow, twice a week and will more than likely spend three weeknights working at the library.
ps, the laptop battle is less than a month away. im kind of nervous.
the end.

4:41 pm - WHAT ARE YOU DOING ON JANURARY 22nd?
|
i am going to try and go to this if anyone else would be interested in coming.
also, a couple of days ago a friend posted on myspace about this thrift store in powhatan where you pay two dollars and they give you a groccery bag which you area allowed to fill with as much as you can. since my sleeping schedule is totally fucked i was up to be able to investigate during it's business hours of 10am-2pm (on tuesday, thursday, and saturday) my main motivation of course, was records and when the damage was done i ended up getting a little over twenty records in addition to a couple of books, four shirts, a coatm and some cassettes. so far the most promising records out of this batch are an ella jenkins record (who wrote the lovely "i'm going to school today") that is all about playing music and making pretty sounds and then a record entitled "women be women" by a christian lady who says women should center their lives on being wives and mothers.
( in unrelated record news... )

my little brother is building a computer out of legos and had to go to toys r us to get a bigger bottom piece to build said computer upon. he convinced me to go with him, so i convinced him to take me to the goodwill down the street from the toys r us. even though they now charge three dollars a record instead of two, i found some cool things...
"survival of the fittest" -the headhunters "secrets" -herbie hancock "breackdance" -an instructional record on how to breakdance that includes a "detailed poster & instruction rap on how to break" "electronic sounds" -george harrison "the story of star wars" ( and finally.... the best record evar!!! )

3:43 am - part two of my neverending story.
|
still just starting to really dig deep into the crates of knowledge concerning these arts lately i've been obsessed with convincing the world what i do is nothing shy of creative but in the end it's all a listener's opinion so i pretend to talk it up with enough whatever i was going on about probably wasn't worth it.
BUT i won a second turntable on ebay.
ALSO sixtoo is amazing. buying records > having money.
PS i want your audio philez plz. if anyone and everyone out there would be so kind as to record themselves or something else emitting audio into a digital format that i can then play around with i promise to make good use of it. i've been thinking of trying to kick up interest in a sample trading group/community/something similar for silly people who like those sorts of things.
anyways, back to the paper.
current music: body ache summer ep -sixtoo .
