12:11 pm - The More You Know...
|
Some good public advice: Stop feeling sorry for yourself.
The happiest people I know aren't the smartest, the richest, or the most physically beautiful people on the block - they're just people who refuse to feel sorry about themselves. They're people that when disaster strikes, draw up a blueprint for recovery, rather than sitting their ass in the wreckage and weeping - hoping for reason and purpose to be delivered to them in a wax sealed envelope. They're people that don't rely entirely on others to enjoy life - fun is to be had and given as well. They're people that realize that a state of mind largely centers on choice. They're people that know that some stops in life have great meaning, while others have no meaning at all... and there's nothing wrong with that.
In life's misgivings, I always take comfort in a line from one of my friends:
One thing you cannot afford to do--that's to feel sorry for yourself. That's what leads to drugs, to alcohol, too those things that tear you apart. In football we always said that the other team couldn't beat us. We had to be sure that we didn't beat ourselves. And that's what people have to do, too--make sure they don't beat themselves.

9:26 am - New Analogy
|
Since I support a lot of people who aren't technically savvy, I'm always trying to think of new analogies to help explain technical mishap. Well, as of late, a crapload of Windows viruses are spreading throughout the college. So far, two Mac people have called in saying that their colleages claim that they've sent them a virus. I explain to them that, no, the Mac cannot run a Windows virus - and even if the Mac could run the virus, it would ask you for authentication before modifying system files - which is a really stupid idea... I mean, shit, who would want a computer that's secure.
So my new virus analogy is this: pimps and hoes. A pimp is a computer that spreads the virus around and is also infected. A ho is a machine that is infected, but has no means to spread because it has been detached from the pimp (ie, blocked IP). And the Mac is the guy walking on the street who gets to bang whoever the hell he wants because, well, he's wrapped in a six inch thick condom.

9:05 am - Looking for a place close to campus?
|
Hey - just a quick shoutout for my friend, Fumi.. He's moving out of his apartment near Lane and High St. (right by the CVS!) and is looking for a person to sublease. Gas station and CVS right there - can't beat it if you have a late night hunger attack. His roommates are clean and easy going (2 girls and a guy). Let me know if anyone is interested - he's been pretty stressed out trying to find someone to live there while still do all of his art projects.

8:23 am - School still blows
|
I've graduated. And the pointless pain of CIS academia still resonates through my spine. I'm learned more real world application from reading online texts in the last month than I did my entire 4+ year tenure with the CIS department. I suppose it's like this at a lot of Universities... but man, now I have to play catchup with the rest of the people my age who didn't go to college.
I suppose I shouldn't bark about it. When push comes to shove, I'm going to be the one who wrote the assembler, interpreter, parser, executor, and all of that other happy CIS horse pucky. But my interest has always - and always will be - with web development. I learned a healthy dose of void from the University concerning that one. So now I must read, read, and read.
On the TBDBITL front, I'm kind of glad to be done. A year as squad leader was mentally exhausting, always trying to please everyone. For a group that knows how to work hard and keep driving, you'd be surprised at how many people just do exactly what I'm doing here - bitch. "This is bullshit. Why are we doing this? Waste of time." If I could have conveyed one message more clearly it would have been: stay positive. It's really simple advice, and I'm sure that I'm just as guilty. But, think about it: how do you help 28 other young men and women keep their chins up when they're overworked, overbooked, and run by a decaying leader who has lost his touch? Woody quotes can only go so far... I don't consider myself to be a natural born leader... but I'm not a follower either. Maybe more of a disciple. It's really an odd place to be stuck - I never go on power trips, but I can only stand the bitch role so long. Not that I get sassy; I'm very much in favor of discipline . This brings me a current situation at work: I am a systems specialist. Basically, a junior tech who fixes Windows problems all day at various buildings on campus for the college of education. I don't mind this work at all - sometimes it's funny to hear people's explanations of what they think is wrong with their PC - "Yeah, my email doesn't work. I think it's because I had a paper jam in my printer a month ago and I use my cellphone a lot." Right, and your car won't start because you looked at in a funny way. But, back to the point: I sweated 4+ years coding and now I run virus updates. Of course, this partly my choice - I could have tried to find another job. This job does have perks - great OSU benefits, state retirement, prestige of working for "The Ohio State University", great coworkers, and, of course, football tickets after three years. And when I'm not fixing problems, I can sit idle at my desk, doing as I please with a PowerMac G5 they bought me. But I'm still longing for something... So, I think I've come to a standoff: get comfy or get packing? I kind of want both. So...
I am going to start a company. An insanely great company. And I'm setting the lofty goal of being profitable in 6 months. A fellowship of three people: a Windows geek, a Mac OS X geek, and an artist. Can we make it to mount doom and back to the shire? My heart tells me yes.

10:09 am - Hey Intel: April Fool's!
|
Hey Intel: we were just kidding. The PowerPC 970 runs at 2.5GHz, not 1.8GHz... It's about time the f'ing tables turned. http://www-5.ibm.com/de/pressroom/cebit2003/en/highlights/powerpcblade.html Interesting note: the Athlon XP runs at 2.16GHz So, yeah, let's play you're little clock game now.
For the energy consumption of 1 Pentium 4, you can power 2 full powered PowerPCs at 2.5GHz ... and these are "real" MHz! (ie, SHORT PIPELINE!) The puppies also have a VECTOR PROCESSOR for NON-NERD activities like video editing, photo manipulation, etc.
Damn, I'm sick of money hungry fucks running this industry. The PowerPC is a better design... HANDS DOWN.

All that is gold does not glitter, Not all those who wander are lost; The old that is strong does not wither, Deep roots are not reached by the frost. From the ashes a fire shall be woken, A light from the shadows shall spring; Renewed shall be blade that was broken, The crownless again shall be king.

3:20 am - PC Pledge
|
I Pledge (if I am emotionally so inclined, but otherwise make no commitment whatsoever) Allegiance (or if not, at least a passing interest in) to the Cloth Symbol (known by most but not necessarily myself as "The Flag") of the loosely associated group of governmental regulatory bodies known as The United States of America (which may also be referred to as a group of ethnically diversified persons living in the same place at the same time) and to the Republic (please refer to the aforementioned disclaimer regarding the USA) for which it stands, one nation (please refer to the aforementioned disclaimer regarding the USA), under (or maybe even over) an unspecified deity (or not if you so choose so as not to possibly offend any member of the ethnically diversified group herein assembled to recite or not to recite this statement of allegiance or interest depending on the mood of the moment) indivisible (or invisible or visible or whatever) with Liberty (because you have to have liberty even if there is no commitment or responsibility whatsoever) and Justice (whatever you may define that to be) for All (and by "all" we may mean just one lousy individual who wants to, with the help of his A.C.L.U. court appointed attorney, ruin everything for everybody else).

1:39 pm - A Lesson in ISA
|
By now I'm sure all of your are more than used to Intel's famous "Pentium chime" on just about every PC commercial - Gateway, Dell, Compaq... The Intel Pentium 4 processor has reached a clock of 2.6GHz. This means that the processor is capable of running 2.6 billion instructions per second. Wow. Sounds like a hell of a lot of speed, doesn't it? But check this out:
RC5 Performance: 1275MHz Pentium 3 Processor - 3,617 kkeys/sec 2556MHz Penium 4 Processor - 3,644 kkeys/sec
That's a .007% gain in performance over a difference of 1281MHz. The point? The MHz of a microprocessor is secondary to how well it is designed. Intel has successfully convinced consumers that more MHz = more performance... If that's the case, then explain this:
1000MHz PowerPC G4 (7455) Microprocessor x 2 in a Power Mac G4 with only a 133MHz bus.
RC5 Performance: 21,129 kkeys/sec Average of each CPU: 10,564 kkeys/sec
So a 1000MHz PowerPC CPU, which uses *MUCH LESS ENERGY* than a Intel Penium 4 running at 2556MHz, is 2.9 times faster. A 2000MHz PowerPC (2 x 1000MHz) system is 5.8 times faster, and still uses less energy.

which Episode II character are you?
Probably the greatest Jedi Knight of all. Like Obi Wan, you are wise and keep your feet on the ground at all times. You will not be outsmarted by anyone. You are always faithful to your friends. Be careful though, danger lurks around every corner - you could even be betrayed by those closest to you.

2:18 pm - Naptime
|
I think I've finally adapted to college life. I'm now fully functional with only 6 hours of sleep. This is a big step for me... I mean, just last year I would wake up, go to the shower and begin asking myself, "Ok, what must I do in order to sleep again?" Usually, the answer was simply surviving a day of class... or combining class + sleep.. cleep?
Anyway, I'm going to go take a nap now.
