| About: | The Metropolis Museum of Art was created in 1889 when the city was bequeathed a small but signifcant art collection by an anonymous benefactor. Funds for building construction were raised by subscription and the museum opened its doors in 1893. The MMA is at the forefront of art acquisition and conservation, scholarly and scientific research, exhibitions, and educational outreach programs. Private donations from charitable institutions such as the Wayne Foundation and Lillian Luthor Charities International have allowed it to grow and diversify its collections and facilities. In 2002, the MMA opened its Electronic Media galleries, a cutting-edge exhibition space showcasing the latest work in this exciting and fast-growing field. | |
