Palace issue writ against Dowie (new Charlton manager) [May. 30th, 2006|01:14 pm]

premiership

[tomburnell]
Fun and games in south east London today-

Palace appoint Dowie as their new manager [BBC & Charlton].

Then Simon Jordan issued a writ against Dowie for "fraudulent statements about his reasons for leaving the club" [BBC & Palace].

Hopefully it'll, with legal restrictions, prompt Jordan into finally turning in another Observer column - it's been over a month since his last "fortnightly" attempt. I've enjoyed them, even if they're quite sporadic lately.

EDIT

BRILLIANT! Sky Sports News have taken to this with, well, their usual love for anything lively.

There's footage of someone trying to "show up" Charlton at the press conference by approaching Dowie and serving him the writ during it all; he's forcible removed by people but then later was accepted back in to deliver it to Dowie off camera.

I just find Jordan's attempt to piss off Charlton in the press conference so amusing, personally.

Second time lucky [May. 30th, 2006|07:50 am]
thearseblog

Ah fucking crap. I do like this Wordpress system but it’s just eaten the whole of today’s post as I went to publish it. Stupid thing thinks it’s Sol Campbell and my post was an enormous pie filled with four and twenty blackbirds. And by blackbirds I mean roast chickens stuffed with fillet steak. Gah.

Anyway, let me try and recreate it. I mentioned the story about Real Madrid wanting Arsene Wenger as their new manager and then said it was pointless commenting on it because it was never going to happen. Which is true. There’s no chance. More likely is Fabio Capello who probably doesn’t fancy the task of bringing Juventus back up from Serie C1 when they get relegated.

Then there was Jens Lehmann telling his German friends about Theo Walcott. There was a witty aside about how the Germans know as much about his as Arsenal fans because we’ve never seen him play either but that might change with little Mickey Owen injured and Rooney’s metatarsal buckling under the immense weight above it. Maybe we’ll see Walcott get a decent run out tonight as England take on Hungary.

Thierry Henry was complaining about the French fans at the Stade de France while reports in Spain have linked us with Villarreal’s Spazilian midfielder Marco Senna. He’d be a good signing for us and would certainly strenghten the squad but whether or not Villarreal will let him go is another thing. They’ve just added Pires to a midfield with Riquelme and they are going to need a physical presence in there.

And that was it. Just as well there’s very little happening, eh?

[music |Ada plays-Cold Mountain OST]

What we have lost will never be returned to us. The land will not heal - too much blood. All we can do is learn from the past and make peace with it. --Cold Mountain.

There's no sun. There's no wind. It's a clear looking day. But it's bringing back sensations of a vague, nearly forgotten memory.

Restless and confused, I feel. Funny and melancholic, too.

So I'll do what I do best, smile past this uneasy moment.

Campbell on Maradona [May. 30th, 2006|11:11 am]

premiership

[tomburnell]
From here: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,27-2201285_1,00.html

Alastair Campbell reflects on Maradona from the SoccerAid game.

It's an interesting read and - from watching Maradona on Saturday night - he was enjoyable to watch. Gone are the days where he was that massively fat and hospitalised wreck and, from the article, it really does seem like he's incredibly passionate about the sport still.
The adulation shown to him by the players is quite something as well.

Siti Cable network completely down [May. 30th, 2006|01:39 pm]

bangalore

[pramodbiligiri]
Hi,
Does anyone know when we can expect Siti Cable to resume services, as it's been down since yesterday.

Deccan Herald says it's because of a competing network (owned by the CM's wife!) cutting down their cables (http://deccanherald.com/deccanherald/may302006/index2057242006529.asp - link seems down right now). More info on that would be useful too.

Thanks
P.S: I know I should be actually asking this to the Siti Cable executives, but felt the issue is of general interest to Bangaloreans anyway.

Carragher as holding midfielder... [May. 30th, 2006|02:13 am]

premiership

[thecrob]
should be interesting to see how he does...I'm thinking he'll do quite well being as hes always being considered such a great utility player...i was expecting Carrick to be put in there, but from what ive heard his last game was shit. I'm glad that Sven is trying out this 4-1-4-1 tactic. What does everyone else think?

another book tag [May. 29th, 2006|11:59 pm]

nandana
1. What was the last book you read?

Broken Verses - Kamila Shamsie

(Of course, I have to read all her books)

2. What book(s) are you reading now?

Selfish Gene (Richard Dawkins), All for love (Ved Mehta), What looks like crazy on an ordinary day ( Pearl Cleage)

3. Do you have a library card? Do you use it?

Yes. I have two. With my university card, I really don't need a second one. I still got the local library membership. Just in case.

4. How do you choose a new book to read?

Recommendations. People or websites. Blogs, a lot of the time.  Sometimes by cover. Very rarely, but sometimes by title.

When I was in Cochin, it was easy at the Eloor lending library. To find the book if I go with a recommended title, or just browse and find something that looked interesting. Browsing doesn't work in huge univ libraries. I would need ladders and LOTS of time.  So I let the AI algorithms Amazon uses to tell me what I might like, search for those titles on the library catalogue if I like the suggestions, add to my book bag if found, take a print out of the book bag list, go to the shelves and check the books out.

5. We all had to read books in school. Which was your favorite? Your least favorite? Do you think you would feel differently about them if you read them now?

I cannot think of books I liked very much. But I absolutely loved Malayalam class in my ninth std. My teacher was the most awesome language teacher ever. She was extremely witty, was very good at the language and made learning a pleasure. (Plus she was a family friend and mother to my arch rival.) I can say that my 9th std Malayalam text book was the best thing I had to read for school.

I had to read Hard Times (Charles Dickens). For pre-degree. I did not like it, partly because I did not enjoy the way it was taught.

W(h)ine ahead [May. 29th, 2006|12:06 pm]

mmk
If you knew me when I was reading George B Shaw's Saint Joan, this might be even more amusing than it appears on the surface. At work, for feels like the nth time, we moved cubes again. This time, the entire larger org is finally together in a single building. The building is new, unpleasantly smelling of paint and slightly more purple than I would like. The kicker of course is names on the conference rooms. Now, some floors have had some really good names - "sane", "love", "consistent", "appropriate" (head over, I'm in sane; we are meeting in love, etc). Some have been countries, famous beaches, natural wonders, games etc. Down south, one floor has types of cheeses, with one room being the ex-CEO's name (big cheese, heh).

However, just as luck would have it, the floor I moved into has wines for conference room names. And on no, not any old wine, here's a selection: Carignan, Chenin, Gamay, Mourvedre, O Muscat, Sanjiovese, Tempranillo and finally, my favourite Gewürztraminer. Needless to say, for the sake of sanity, everyone has switched to directional navigation, rendering conference names useless.

The next time around that there's a chance to suggest names, I'm going with the obscure characters in the Mahabharata theme: Barbarika, Hidimbi, Mayasura, Iravan, Muchukunda (more Mahabharata names if you want to spend a couple of hours on wikipedia).
