Applied for a freelance movie poster design gig this morning and have to attend a screening of a unreleased movie tonight and that would be all well and good, wonderful, fun, exciting etc... but I was counting on using tonight to burn a bunch of CD's and do some last minute practicing before the show tomorrow and I'm now having to take most of tomorrow off work now just so I can be ready for tomorrows show and the designs for the movie thing all have to be done by monday and I have to help my dad with his PC on sunday...

Flip to page 32 of any book (preferably a book you're reading or one that is within arms reach). Type the first line/first sentence as a comment to me, then post this in your own journal with your sentence in the subject line.
Concept stolen from amaena even though no one (at least as far as I know) knows at this time what was actually meant when she posted this.

Coded = 2 |
[27 Jan 2005|08:40am] |
Coded is, for this show at least, myself and my super talented friend Brandon Jahrig (bran).
Well we're gearing up for the show in a week and a half. All is going well and our setlist if finally coming together. We'll be performing a few tracks from the new (and currently untitled) album as well as a bunch from Cholinesterase Inhibitor. As well as practicing for the show Brandon and I have collaborated on a few tracks that we may throw into the mix improv style as well.
This post is also a call for anyone with a couple of keyboard stands to let me know if we could borrow them for the show..(2 stands of the adjustable X variety will do) I wasn't anticipating having a second member for this show but brandon knows most of my material already (he's played with me at the Fox and hound and a little outdoor thing I did in Onoway a few years back) and I think the second person helps with the live dynamics.

SID synth |
[17 Jan 2005|02:36pm] |
I've been in this weird mood lately and I'm totally craving a challenging circuit bending/synth building project. I've also been craving a genuine SID chip synth. The SIDstation is currently out of production and the VST emulators I've tried seem pretty sketchy.
As luck would have it, I found this today. The actual hack can be found here with many pretty pictures of completed SID/C-64 modifications.
I think It's just difficult enough to be a challenge but easy enough that I wouldn't be too overwhelmed. The only problem is that I don't have an old C-64 lying around. This is essentially a call to anyone that happens to have a C64 that they don't need to donate it to my little project. Or you could buy me one if you were so inclined?!
(X posted to my BLOG because I desperately want to do this up and I'm broke)

My current recording rig. |
[16 Jan 2005|04:48pm] |
Clocwise from the eMac: eMac g4 700Mhz Roland VM3100Pro Mixer M-Audio Ozone Audio/Midi interface Korg microKORG Synth Roland Juno-106 Analog Synth
This setup rocks... everything is within arms reach.
The live rig will be slightly stripped down I think. iBook, Ozone and microKORG are all I should be needing. We'll see what happens on Feb 4th. The iBook has all the same programs and files on it (and I've got backups) so, unless there's a huge fuck up, everything should run as smooth as silk.
New single ALMOST finished. It SHOULD (praying to the audio/lyric gods) be done by wed/thurs so greg can give it a few plugs during the next few Saturdays. Yes it's dancy-enough for a saturday crowd (in my opinion). It's WAY more poppy than the CI material.

SID 6581 chip Emulator |
[26 Nov 2004|03:11pm] |
http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/QuadraSID6581/
Any musicians familiar with the Sidstation and any computer geeks familiar with the famous SID sound chip from the classic Commodore 64 may find this interesting. There are a few of these SID emulators for Mac and PC. Some have touted this chip as being a Ultra Super Mini Micro Moog, but it's glitchy funky analogue sound IMHO is much much more. I've wanted a Sidstation for quite a while, and now I almost have one.
For the sake of history these chips were made specifically for the C64 and there are almost no more chips in existence. The only people that have any anymore are the fortunate owners of the Sidstation and that box sold out in 2003. I've seen Sidstations sell on ebay in excess of $1500. The makers of the actual chip made numerous mistakes when writing the original technical documentation for it and therefore no one (not even the makers) knows the full extent of the SIDs capabilities.
Emulators are great but if I could get my hands on an original SID chip or Sidstation with it's original analogue filters I think I'd be in heaven. If you have an old C64 sitting in your garage/attic can you donate it to an obsessed geek?
Thank god there are people that still give a crap about these old chips. And thank god for /.

Sales people can go and Die. |
[24 Nov 2004|02:08pm] |
Sales people are the scum of the earth. Either learn how to walk your fat ass down to my department with the work orders - so that I have enough time to do the work, or find another job. Learn that 6 color artwork is not the same as 2 color. Learn how to fill out the damned work order properly. Learn that, even though I'm the artist, ANY sort of description/sketch that I can work from is better than nothing. Learn that, if the customer has a fax and/or email that I can send proofs to, INCLUDE IT on the order so that I can do so. It is NOT my responsibility to chase your customers when they don't approve their shit.
I am not your friend. I don't care that you can't draw. I don't care about your quota. I don't care about you losing your commission (you make twice as much as I do anyway). I don't care about your trip to the states for some embroidery show. I don't give a flying fuck about you.
Get it together, or go home.
I desperately want a gun right now.

Internet Exploder |
[19 Nov 2004|03:41pm] |
Looking at the Dark Alberta site stats I'm absolutely amazed by how many people are still using Internet Explorer. If anyone reading this seriously cares at all about viruses/spyware/privacy on their computer they should not be using IE. To prove my point... the guy in charge of the security division at Microsoft won't even use it.
There are MANY browsers that actually are safer and have more features than IE. I only use IE as a last resort if a page isn't loading properly. Mozilla, Camino and Firefox are all great FREE alternatives from mozilla.org. Opera is a great browser that you can pay for (or don't pay and watch some crappy ads). For Mac there are also Safari and OmniWeb($) as well as all of the above alternatives. Almost all of these Browsers have a built in google search function and popup blockers.
All the alternative browsers are 100% compatible with all the current web standards. If a site doesn't work in one of the alternative browsers, the site is most likely using IE extensions that are not standards anyway. Sites that don't look right in IE are sometimes fully standards compliant but M$, being the horrible bunch of coders we've all grown to hate, didn't write IE very well and it sometimes makes mistakes rendering compliant sites.
I personally use Safari with a smattering of Firefox. (I gave up entirely on M$ almost a year and a half ago, as most of you know)
I want to know which browser you use and why? If you use IE what would give you the incentive to switch / why haven't you switched already?

Anti-aging German Beer! |
[18 Nov 2004|03:34pm] |
Those feisty beer swilling Germans have done it! A German brewery has invented anti-aging beer! The only catch (besides the fact that it's effects haven't been proven at all) is that it may not be able to be labeled as beer because it has ingredients other than Hops, Barley, Yeast, and Water and breaks the Reinheitsgebot the worlds oldest valid law, which restricts beer to those four ingredients.
