What I really meant to post about earlier is this: When I was talking to my mother last night about chronic illnesses, it turns out that aside from her, very few of my relatives have had breast cancer. Like, it's just her and some great-aunt of hers, so I can stop thinking that my getting breast cancer is a given. There was more to the post, about the stigmatization of cancer when my mother was small, and suchlike, but I want to sleep. I hate vague, open-ended homework assignments.

Also - Meredith (![]() Let me amend that - a front squat looks like every thing anyone with carpal tunnel has ever been told to avoid, rolled into one movement. All it needs is a keyboard.

My parents visited briefly today, taking me grocery and miscellaneous household item shopping - they were out in the area to take my brother to a yoyoing tournament at UMass-Amherst. I now have a blender! Wooo! Also now have a TI-89 calculator to replace my beloved TI-83, which I managed to dump water all over a few months ago. I feel a bit more conflicted about this though - you know how when you've been using an operating system for a long time and you update to what is allegedly an upgrade of it and all the little things that are different drive you insane? "No, I didn't want a different calculator, I wanted a more capable TI-83!" Disturbing: the packaging advertises in big letters on the front that it comes preloaded with review questions for the AP Calculus Exam..... Tomorrow I'm meeting with Rabbi Lisa and two other students who are interested in converting.I'm looking forward to that, especially since I hadn't expected to be able to start studying with her this soon (ah, scheduling). Will try to remember to post tomorrow about it. Unfortunately, the only time they both had free was Monday between 12:15 and 1:15, so we'll be meeting in Wilder, the Kosher/Halal cafeteria. I am not all that fond of the food there, and since I have class from 8:30 to 12:15 and again from 1:15 to 3:00 that day, I'll have to eat lunch there. Oh well. At least tomorrow's a dairy day there.

I'm probably going to make a real dinner tonight. Would anyone who's going to be down in South Hadley for Rocky Horror like to come over before hand for dinner?

Recently, I had the misfortune to pick up off of a shelf of "pleasure reading" books that are kept in the lobby of my college's library a book by George Carlin, a comedian who must be relatively well known because his name was vaguely familiar to me before picking up the book ( and we all know how well versed I am in popular culture). I was surprised to find that pretty much all of the material in it was really ... not funny. I have encountered far more witty fortune cookie messages.

I am now used enough to my touchstream that today in engineering when entering a bit of code on the instructor's laptop, I found myself hitting the home row for shift. *gigglesnort*

So, yes, It's a month into the new calendar year, and I'm just now making my resolutions. But, I just started a new semester, so it feels like a new year or something like that for me. Alternately, you could pretend that I'm a tree. Anyway, I have two resolutions. One is to take better care of my health. This means remembering to refill my prescriptions before I run out, remembering to schedule appointments, and finding an occupational therapist and possibly a chiropracter out where I go to school. The other is being prompt about sending and replying to email.

Dear cafeteria: while taking a dish that contains milk and replacing said milk with an approximately equal volume of vegetable oil might technically make it parve, it does not make it edible. Please get a clue and perhaps a vegan or kosher dessert cookbook. Susannah, who will be staying home and eating pesto.

So, today I need to figure out whether I'm applying for any summer internships/research positions that have application deadlines of January 31. This is incredibly nerve-wracking. If you don't see me this weekend, this may be why. So, it's 1:30 now. I really ought to go grocery shopping for at least the bare minimums (salad stuff, notebooks (yes, not really groceries, but the grocery store has them for much less). I have 2 options; I can either walk down there and carry stuff back in my backpack (it's too icy to ride my bike, I think) or I can try to coerce someone with a car into taking me there (it's only about a mile from my house, but down a steep hill). If I walk, I should go now. I have something I have to be at at 5, and then more stuff that will probably run until 8:30, and I might want to go to the recyclemania meeting, which is at 4, so the only way I can walk there in daylight is if I go now.

My school's mail system is currently incredibly fucked up. Pissy bitching regarding that to follow this evening. The upshot however, is that my Mount Holyoke email address is not a good place to send me mail currently. If that's what you usually use, try my isomerica address (susannah *at* isomerica *dot* net). This is also the email address that livejournal comments go to, so I might not see comments for a while.

My hair is now purple. I have a largish bag of clothing that was left in the hotel room at Arisia. I have a pair of Lucky's pants and some other peoples' socks. Also, someone left a granite colored over-sized d20 in my room at home. Jamie, is this yours? Packing now for the mad dash back to school.

Back from the con, sort of. More about that after I am fed and washed. Mel, I bought a book on Imperial Mongolian cooking for you.

So, I finally got tired enough of having an extension cord running out my bedroom door at home to the front room where my brother's computer is temporarily, so I got my father to supervise (I've never done this before) while I put in a grounded, three pronged outlet into one of the outlets in that room. You see, when this house was last rewired in 1961, someone had enough foresight to put ground wires everywhere, but not quite enough to make the actual outlets three pronged and grounded..... Tomorrow I'm going to make all the outlets in my room grounded. While I was talking about doing this with my parents, I discovered that my little brother would also like to learn how to do electrical and home telephone wiring, so perhaps I'll get some books and such on that and we can learn together. My mom is enthusiastic, which is understandable, since the telephone wiring in this house is a rat's nest. Incidentally, if you know of any books on either of those topics, please leave a comment with the title.

I just discovered that sabriel thinks that it's five hours earlier than it is, and moreover that I apparently never installed an ntp client on it. Bleh? Meredith is back from Peru!!! Yay!

So, for some reason, the gesture on my new touchstream keyboard for Enter works just fine in graphical programs, but in in the terminal and in terminal emulators shows up as ^. There's a normal Enter key, so I'm not desperate for a solution, but it would be nice to know what's going on.

So, my shiny is here. I like it, somewhat unsurprisingly. It comes as a major relief to me that it doesn't take anything particularly special to just type at it. Yay, other people will be able to use my keyboard. More importantly, I won't have to leave another keyboard out for people to use. I should go read the manual now and figure out how to do the special things.

Whoa. My parents are going to get me a Touchstream keyboard. Silly marketing hype on the page aside, I think that it really will be easier on my hands than what I'm using now.
