The first Wes Stitch'n'Bitch will be held in the Nic lounge on Thursday at 8pm. We may watch the OC special if the TV works.

Beginners are welcome. I can teach some people how to knit. If you are an experienced knitter, and are planning on coming, please bring any needles that you'd be comfortable with other people using. I'm afraid more people will show up than I have needles & scrap yarn for. So if you can, bring your own supplies.

So, Nic lounge, 8pm, Thursday 9/23

See you there!

xoxo Marianna (and Andy)

Okay, is there any way to get from here to the airport [Bradley/Hartford/Springfield], and back from the airport to here, without 120$ worth of cab fare, when it's not shuttle-holiday season? Because that is more my plane ticket cost in the first place.

3:39 pm - Subject: Help call on the GOP to stop voter suppression

ebsith
Thought this is easier than e-mailing everyone...

Dear friend,

I hope you will join me in signing this petition from MoveOn. It's about Republicans' use of voter suppression tactics, which undermines fair elections and the rights of all Americans to vote and have their votes counted.

http://www.moveonpac.org/suppression/

Preventing eligible voters from voting is a basic affront to our democracy. It undermines the basic principles of our electoral system and calls into question the legitimacy of our elections.

Join me in calling for President Bush and the Republican Party to publicly disavow voter suppression tactics and to condemn and hold accountable those in their party who use them.

http://www.moveonpac.org/suppression/

Thank you.

11:01 am - tonight--6-7pm, Activism 101 @ Wes!

activist85
**Please forward as you see fit, and tell first years you know!**

ACTIVISM 101 @ Wes!!

Chances are, you heard about Wes students being being activists, and all liberal and radical, before coming here. Now you're here, and can make your own judgements on the truth of that.

You might be overwhelmed with the issues upperclassmen expect you to know about: chalking, queer stuff, race and class privilege, environmental issues, the presidential race, Israel-Palestine relations, and so much more.

OR, you might be wondering whatever happened to the radicals on campus, what activism is actually going on, and what issues are current.

Whether you've done lots of activism and are looking to get involved here or you don't have much experience, but want to work on certain issues...

Come to Activism 101 @ Wes, hear from upperclassmen, and discuss.

Thurs, Sept 16th, 2004
6-7pm
200 Church lounge
Snack-type food provided.

**The discussion will focus on people's perceptions of Wesleyan student activism, what that looks like, and how to get involved. Upperclassmen in attendance will share their experiences with some of the activism and organizing that has been happening at Wes recently, answer questions, and be able to direct students toward existing campus groups/networks working on their issues of interest.**

So, see you there! And, please, bring friends!

With the Fall Equinox less than a week away I'm wondering if anyone knows how to get in touch with the Pagan community here (there must be one, come on, this is Wesleyan)

I'm looking for people to observe with or talk with or anything, just connect up with. Is there any sort of student organization? Or do you practice at all? Or can you give me information on how to contact people who do?

leave a note here or email me:

2:20 pm - Chain Mail Worth Passing Along

Remind Your friends
By Helen Wolfe
Subject: The Right to Vote

The women were innocent and defenseless. Forty prison guards wielding clubs -- with their warden's blessing -- went on a rampage against 33 women convicted of "obstructing sidewalk traffic." They beat Lucy Burn, chained her hands to the cell bars above her head and left her hanging for the night, bleeding and gasping for air. They hurled Dora Lewis into a dark cell, smashed her head against an iron bed, knocking her out cold. Her cellmate, Alice Cosu, thought Lewis was dead and suffered a heart attack. Additional affidavits describe the guards grabbing, dragging, beating, choking, slamming, pinching,
twisting and kicking the women. By the end of the night, the women were barely alive.

Thus unfolded the "Night of Terror" on November 15, 1917, when the warden at the Occoquan Workhouse in Virginiaordered his guards to teach a lesson to the suffragists who were imprisoned there because they had dared to picket Woodrow Wilson's White House for the right to vote.

For weeks, the women's only water came from an open pail. Their food-- colorless slop-- was infested with worms. When one of the leaders, Alice Paul, embarked on a hunger strike, they tied her to a chair, forced a tube down her throat and poured liquid into her until she vomited. She was tortured like this for weeks until word was smuggled out to the press.

Now this year, in 2004, some women won't vote because -- why, exactly? We have carpool duties? We have to get to work? Our vote doesn't matter? It's raining?

HBO has a new movie called "Iron-Jawed Angels." It is a graphic depiction of the battle these women waged so their granddaughters could pull the curtain at the polling booth and have their say. What would those women think of the way we use -- or don't use -- our right to vote?

In this production, it's jarring to watch Woodrow Wilson and his cronies try to persuade a psychiatrist to declare Alice Paul insane so she could be permanently institutionalized. And it is inspiring to watch the doctor refuse. Alice Paul was strong, he said, and brave. That didn't make her crazy. The doctor admonished the men: "Courage in women is often mistaken for insanity."

Please pass this on to all the women you know. We need to get out and vote, and use this right that was fought so hard for by these very courageous women.

OK

so Whoopi Goldberg, my favorite actress ever, is doing stand up at Holyoke Community College (Holyoke, MA...about an hour away) on Saturday, September 25th. I would really like to go...but I don't have any transportation...

anyone who likes Whoopi Goldberg and has a car wanna come too? or maybe someone has a friend they want to visit at Mt. Holyoke.......

I don't know if it would be a done deal if someone does have transportation, just because I don't know if it's sold out and I don't want to buy tickets without knowing if I can actually go...

anyone?

current mood: hopeful

On the voter registration form, would I put my Wesleyan address as my home address if I'm registering here? Also, there's a section called ID number that says I need to see item 6 in the instruction for my state (what the heck?). I'm going to register here in CT since it's too late to get an absentee ballot for NY, but is there somewhere in Middletown I can go to fill out the necessary forms and all that? Thanks.

Or just do you just hate SUV's?
Either way, come to the first meeting of Wesleyan's
Environmental Organizers Network!
Monday night, 9 pm, in the Science Center Woodhead Lounge
Note: We're not crazy, or ecoterrorists, or a pack of hippies. We're just really effective. No experience necessary.

Are the auditions this week (for the various acapella bands, Wesleyan Singers, etc.) the only chance we'll have, or will there be another chance to audition? I wanted to audition for the Singers, but I couldn't find any flyers today (shocking, I know), and I forgot the audition time.

current music: "Sparks Are Gonna Fly" by Catherine Wheel

Okay, I know there are some Argus people here, so I beeseech for your wisdom: I missed the Argus recruitment meeting last sunday - so how do I go about signing up to be a staff writer for the paper and start doing the grunt-work? And when are the Argus office hours 'cause last time I went up there, it was locked. Any info is appreciated.

Due to scheduling conflicts, we are going to postpone our pilgrimage to the Destina Theatre to view Garden State until next weekend. In planning for today - we forgot that many people have their BiLeGaTA at 2, and then there are the A Capella groups, and Dinner, and soo much going on.

So - here's the plan:

Fabulous Times at the Destina Theatre viewing Garden State will occur next weekend. Keep your eyes peeled on LJ for the details :)

Enjoy your last day before classes
