05:04 pm
Had a fun time today. Fun started when two guys lost their cells in the hotel. One phone was in the lobby, the other in a room. No prob. Around 2, a guy calls the front desk because someone near his room is smoking pot. I walk down the hall and can definitely smell smoke, but since I don't know what pot smells like (never been around it), I can't positively identify it. I call my boss, who tells me to call everyone on 1st floor (except the guy who called, leaving three) and tell them we'd received a complaint about someone smoking pot and if it didn't stop the police would be called. There were no more complaints before I left, so I'm done with it.

Went to the bank, got gas, then went to my dad's office. He locked his keys in the car, and I have the spare set. Let him in his car, go to K-Mart, and get Van Helsing. Been wanting to see that. But I didn't get the normal Van Helsing; I got the special edition, which comes with the original Frankenstein, starring Boris Karloff, Dracula, starring Bela Lugosi, and The Wolfman. Fun times.

Work again tomorrow. yay. Other than that, not much else going. Talk to ya'll later.

Went to Salem to spend Thanksgiving at my sister's. Took about, oh..... Two and a half hours. Or three cds (Restored, by Jeremy Camp, Devotion by the Newsboys, and Welcome to Diverse City by TobyMac). Good cds. And on the way back it was Worldwide by Audio Adrenaline, Empty Me, which is a worship album by various artists, and a third that I can't remember at the moment.

I had a good time at Vicki's. Spent time with my nephews Collin and Evan, dinked around with my brother-in-law's guitar (he hasn't changed the strings in YEARS!!! I think I'll just buy him a set....), made the potatoes, stuffed my face, laughed at my sister's latest t-shirt design (she and her husband operate TummyWear, at http://www.tummywear.org They sell maternity shirts.) It read, "Don't mess with a pregnant woman." How true....

Anyways, good times had by all. Talk to ya'll later.

02:24 pm - Today....
Today after class I went to K-Mart. I looked at the Christian section of cds, but was disappointed. They did not have what I was looking for. Then I saw the electronics clerk pulling stuff out of boxes. There was a chance. I asked him if they had received a cd released today. He looked through the box, and pulled out what I had sought after.....

Restored by Jeremy Camp.

I may be the first person in The Dalles to get it. Kind of a cool feeling. I'm the first person at K-Mart, anyway. That was cool. Now I just need Burden Me...

Last night I gave Tristan and Stephanie a ride home. It was the second time I gave someone outside of my family a ride. The first was Bryce (I'm not counting Kat, since I wasn't solo; my dad was still with me). Tris and Steph live on a road that is not a through-street. This I did not know. Nor did I know that it's narrow. Or that I'd have to be backing around a very misleading corner. At night.

So, I'm in a truck that steers like a tank (going forward), does not back well, it's dark, the road is narrow, and I have to back around a corner to get out. It was a corner that has sidewalk, then a lane of grass, then curb, then street. The grass looked like the street to me. I wondered why that truck was so far out, and then it dawned on me. Next time, I'll drop them off where I can still get out.

Not much else going. Talk to ya'll later.

05:27 pm - Some Thoughts on Tolerance
I have been thinking more and more about tolerance lately. About what it means to be tolerant. About the differences between tolerance and acceptance. What does it mean to be tolerant, especially of others?

The dictionary definition of "tolerance" is "The capacity for or the practice of recognizing and respecting the beliefs or practices of others." The dictionary definition of "acceptance" is "Favorable reception; approval."

Taking the dictionary defintion of tolerance, allow me to propose a hypothetical situation:

A man is walking down the street and sees a stranger holding a sign of protest. The man keeps walking, not paying much attention to the stranger. This is tolerance; he respects the stranger's right to protest.

Now, let's say a different man walks by and sees the same stranger. This second man walks up to the stranger and starts talking with him. Soon the second man is holding a protest sign. This is acceptance; he agrees with the stranger's position.

And now a third man walks by and sees the stranger. Rather than walking by, as the first man did, or joining him, as the second man did, this third man yells at the stranger, using such terms and phrases as "bigot" and "narrow-minded." The stranger says nothing. The third man continues yelling. The stranger stills says nothing. Finally, the third man moves on.

The first man demonstrated tolerance. Although he did not agree with the stranger, he allowed him his right to speak. The second man demonstrated acceptance. He agreed with the stranger and joined him in protest. The third man demonstrated intolerance: he verbally attacked the stranger.

All of us have different opinions. We all have different backgrounds, which affect the way we think. Not all of us agree on every position. That is ok; we do not have to. But if we disagree, we should be as the first man and allow the stranger to speak.

Sometimes the most "tolerant" of us are the most intolerant. We say we accept all others, regardless of race, sexual preference, age, occupation, etc. However, if someone offers a different opinion, they are quick to be labeled a narrow-minded bigot. These "tolerant" individuals are furious when they are opposed or things do not go their way. Rather than accept others' opinions as valid, or even attacking the issue, they attack the person.

An example is this past election. Rather than admiting that people voted for these issues, -- whether they be President Bush's re-election or the passing of constitutional ammendments in 11 states banning same-sex marriage -- they rant and rave, attacking those who voted on the issues.

If you live in the United States, and voted, I want you to know I appreciate what you've done. You have voiced your opinion, as have millions of others. Now accept the results. If you voted for Bush, congratulations. If you voted for Kerry or another candidate, you tried. You were heard.

For those who voted against the winning candidates/measures: you voiced your opinions. You voted for what you felt was right. Now you must be tolerant of the decisions of others. You may not agree with them, but they were in the majority. You can try to change things next year.

To both sides: the election is over. Whether you won or lost, show your maturity by refusing to attack the other side.

Today is November 2nd. Election Day 2004. I have a question: did you vote?

If you voted, that's awesome. I don't want to know who you voted for. I really don't care. But you voted. Good for you.

If you didn't vote, but were eligible, why didn't you? What kept you from the polls?

09:21 pm - Semi-interesting day
Had a semi-interesting day. After church I picked up the roll of film I had developed. I hoped it had a certain picture on it. Nope. But it did have some other really good ones. Of our *cough*modest*cough* accomodations in Mexico. And a really good pic of Jamie S.

Also got Police Acadamies 2&3, which I have noticed go down in ratings. The original was R, 2 is PG-13, and 3 is PG. Progress. I want the whole set on DVD. What can I say? I like the series.

Ate at Ixtapa with Rich, Tris, Shelby, Emily, Daniel, Ben, Ben, Kevin, and Ryan. I miss anyone? Anyway, good food.

Not much else. I'm happy about the pics, though. Especially the one of Jamie. It was a good shot.

Talk to ya'll later.

08:59 pm - A Good Run of Bad Luck
A high roller even when the chips are down
To win her over, I’d seen the tables turn around
She’s ten the hard way, I can feel it in my bones
She’ll be makin’ my day and not another night alone
'Til it’s time for a windfall and not a single moment too soon
I’ve been too long overdue, now I’m gonna shoot the moon

I’d bet it all on a good run of bad luck
Seven come eleven and she could be mine
Luck be a lady, and I’m gonna find love comin’ on the bottom line

I’ve been to the table, and I’ve lost it all before
I’m willin’ and able, always comin’ back for more
Squeezin’ out a thin dime ’til there’s no one hanging on my arm
I’ve gambled on a third time, a fool will tell you it’s a charm
If I’m bettin’ on a loser, I’m gonna have a devil to pay
But it’s the only game I know to play, it doesn’t matter anyway

I’d bet it all on a good run of bad luck
Seven come eleven and she could be mine
Luck be a lady, and I’m gonna find love comin’ on the bottom line
I’d bet it all on a good run of bad luck
Seven come eleven and she could be mine
Luck be a lady, and I’m gonna find love comin’ on the bottom line
A Good Run Of Bad Luck by Clint Black

Love that song. I want to learn how to play that on guitar. It's a cool song; Clint Black knows how to sing.

Anyway, on to other things. Gave Jamie her first lesson today. Showed her how to tune a bass and got her started on a cheat sheet. She wants to start on Jesus Freak. That's a difficult one to start with. I can teach her, but I'm going to have to show her other things, too. But she wants to play Jesus Freak at Fine Arts, so that's the need.

Not a whole lot else going on. Talk to ya'll later.

Found out last night that my brother broke his hand. He's a cop down in Coos Bay, OR. He was taking down a suspect, who was resisting. Ken went to hit him between the shoulder blades, but missed and hit the pavement. He'll be on the disabled list for at least six weeks.

On the plus side, he might be able to join the family for Thanksgiving.

Rain is good. Except when you're doing 70 and passing a semi. Then it's bad. The road is slick, the rain is making it hard to see, and the semi's tires are throwing a sheet of water onto your windshield.

It's raining hard today. Going to Hood River was fine. PARKING in Hood River was another story. I found out that I'm not supposed to park where I've been parking, so I couldn't go there. Every open spot was either a meter or handicapped. All the parking lots are private. But I finally found a spot (about three blocks away) and started walking to class.

I think I'm getting the hang of driving around. It's not that hard, and it's a heckuva lot easier than walking everywhere.

Not much else going...... Talk to ya'll later.

I've got the internet again. Kinda nice; it's only temporary. We're going to have the computer de-fragged. But we've got it for a little while.

Tomorrow I'm going to the church earlier than usual. I'll be setting up my worship powerpoint, that way I can tweak it how I want to.

I haven't finalized my list, but I know it's going to have at least Not Ashamed and probably Blessed Be Your Name. I'm thinking of doing a new song or two, but I'll think about that later.

Plan on going to the Old Mill Bargain Center this afternoon. Might call Ryan and see if he wants to join me. They've got some wonderful sharp pointy things. I've only got two swords. Well, one sword and one dagger.

Speaking of sharp pointy things, I'm disappointed that uscav.com doesn't have the selection they used to. No, I didn't plan on buying any at the moment, but they used to have a wonderful collection. Not anymore, though. Hmm.

Not much else going. Talk to ya'll later.

02:14 pm - News
So last night Pastor Zach announced the two mission trips of 2005: one to the Wallowa area during Spring Break, and the other to Cambodia in August. One will cost just over $100; the other about $2000. At the moment, I plan on going on both. Finances won't be a problem; God's bigger than that. At the moment, there are only two things that can get in the way: not getting the time off from work (which shouldn't be a problem; my boss goes to my church), and the Cambodia trip reaching the cap. See, if the cap (around 30) is reached, students rightfully have priority. I'll be going as a leader.

I'm looking forward to Wallowa because (a) it gives me another chance to be Steven the Sound Guy (Kids Quest), (b) Wallowa Lake is an incredibly gorgeous area, and I love the woods. I'll probably bring a tent and camp out (if I'm allowed to). You can't stay in the woods and not camp out.

Cambodia is different. That's going to another country. And it's not a Vertical Fusion (our youth group) missions trip. It's a district trip, meaning it's a bunch of different churches. I just hope an equal number of guys and girls go, or more guys than girls. It'd be safer that way.

Those of you who are Vertical Fusion students: Yes, I knew in advance about the Cambodia trip. I couldn't talk about it. Anybody thinking/praying about going?

Ending thought: The single greatest trick of Satan isn't convincing people God doesn't exist; it's convincing them he doesn't exist.

I got off work at 7 this morning. I had a class in Hood River at 10. I had to leave The Dalles at 9. About an hour and a half of sleep. Oy.

So why am I here? Well, I had a math test. Took it, have plenty of time, so I'm checking my e-mail. I WAS going to check out my Jeremy Camp pics (taken on my dad's ancient digital camera; uses floppy disks), but I grabbed the wrong disks. Grr.

Current Music: Sea of Faces by Kutless. Good song. Good group.

03:08 pm - Hey ya'll who care
I have in my possession the world's scariest document.....

My driver's license.

Yes, I am now able to drive. I have my own wheels (a 1977 POC Chevy Pick-up). It's interesting. Yesterday I drove to Hood River. And back. Then to CGCC. And back. Stopping first to get some transmission fluid and a short sword (Old Mill Bargain Center, near the on-ramp for Hwy 197 S).

Today was speech. I had to give a persuasive speech. So I did one on why guitars are better than pianoes. One girl took offense. She plays piano. But she couldn't fight my argument that guitars are better because they're cheaper, smaller, cooler (ok, so that's opinion), and better for individual notes.

Tomorrow, I will again bring my acoustic guitar, as well as my electric guitar and electric bass. This will be fun.

Talk to ya'll later.

So, I'm on-line comparing products. I'd prefer going with Dell, but it looks like I'll be getting a Mac. I'm talking Laptops. While Dell has the programs/configurations I prefer (I definately prefer PC to Mac), Mac's iBooks come default with the specific capabilities I'm looking for at a lower cost than Dell.

I should give my brother-in-law a call. He's paid to know about this stuff.

Essentially, I want a laptop with video-editing capabilities. Video-editing so I can make films, a laptop so I can work on them anywhere. This is what I've got on the Mac:

CD/DVD burner (standard)
Video Editing (standard)
GarageBand Music Editing (standard)
$1100 without shipping

That's what I'm after. Speed isn't the biggest thing on my mind at the moment. Now, if Dell or Gateway has something with those same capabilities (and I will compare RAM, memory, etc) for the same price, or just a little higher (say, within $100), I'm getting a Dell. But if not, a Mac.

That's the biggest thing at the moment. Talk to ya'll later.

03:04 pm - Speech
Looks like my speech class will be a lot of fun. I need to type out an out-line and turn it in sometime this weekend. Probably tonight, but I don't know about that.

Tomorrow I have to give an informative speech. I will be giving a speech on The Creation of Middle Earth and the Conclusion of the War of the Ring. Or something like that. Basically, I'm going to talk about how Tolkien wrote the Lord of the Rings. Could be fun.

Class tomorrow, starting at 9 am. Giving my speech then. My class this term is really small.... There aren't even twenty of us. Odd.

Talk to ya'll later.

03:40 pm - Carnivorous Underwear
Hello, my name is Basmati Kasaar. I am suffering from rare and deadly diseases, poor scores on final exams, extreme virginity, fear of being kidnapped and executed by nostril electrocution, and guilt for not forwarding out 50 billion freaking chain letters sent to me by people who actually believe that if you send them on, then that poor 6 year old girl in Arkansas with a leg on her forehead will be able to raise enough money to have it removed before her redneck parents sell her off to the travelling freak show.Read more... )

So classes started today (for me). My math class got out an hour early, so I have time to post on-line. Fun times.

Road construction at Hood River. Right on the freeway on-ramp. That sucked big time.

Not much else going on at the moment. Will update when I can. Later.
