1:53PM - Insensitivity

Calling attention to your leather coat, accessories, or your meat based diet to someone who you know is vegan is no better than telling rape jokes in front of a survivor just because you know it will get a reaction. It certainly begs not a desire for connection.

8:00AM - Take Action! To Protect Religious Freedom

"Government can and does work collaboratively with faith-based organizations. When these organizations receive public dollars, however, they must play by the same rules as other non-profits. Whether an organization is faith-based or not, there must be adequate protections in place to protect individual civil rights and religious freedom. The Job Training Improvement Act would eliminate these necessary protections. Rep. Bobby Scott of Virginia is expected to offer an amendment on the floor to restore civil rights protections."

Although I hate even the thought of any animal being slaughtered, I also want poultry to be covered by the humane slaughter act so that additional suffering and trauma can be avoided. Please click and act.

7:26AM - Organic Catsup and Lycopene

Wow! Organic catsup has 3 times as much lycopene as ordinary. I would assume that includes homemade catsup made with organic tomato paste.

8:32AM - Personality Disorder Definition

from Coping With Trauma: A Guide to Self-Understanding.

DSM-IV defines personality disorder as " an enduring pattern of inner experience and behavior that deviates markedly from the expectations of the individual's culture, is pervasive and inflexible, has an onset in adolescence or early adulthood, is stable over time, and leads to distress or impairment."

Ok, this is really, really loose and extremely disturbing. By this definition, any vegan who is distressed by the sight of meat and slaughter of animals would have a personality disorder. In fact, anyone who acknowledges the violence in their culture, resists participation in the harmful acts and reacts emotionally to very real violence could be pathologized. I can foresee the privatization of mental institutions, similar to the privatization of jails, with peace protesters and other dissenters pathologized and locked away or, more likely, drugged into submission. Urgle!

Note: Used em and strong in this post as opposed to "i" and "b". I want to get into this habit because the em and strong tags can be interpreted by equipment for the visually challenged.

12:49PM - Spicy Roasted Potatoes

When prepared correctly, potatoes can be a very nutritious accompaniment to any meal. Baked or roasted potatoes are an exceptionally healthful low-calorie, high-fiber food that offers significant protection against cardiovascular disease and cancer. Additionally, potatoes contain complex carbohydrates, which should be consumed in proper proportion for maximum health and vitality. Complex carbs with lots of fiber are rich in sources of necessary vitamins and minerals. Simple to prepare and much more healthy than french fries, these spicy roasted potatoes can be served alongside your main dish. To get even more nutrients and flavor out of this recipe, try leaving the skins on the potatoes. You can also use sweet potatoes!

Ingredients:

1 tbsp Dijon mustard
1 tbsp vegetable oil
1 clove garlic, minced
1 tsp dried tarragon
1/4 tsp paprika
1/8 tsp red pepper flakes
2 large potatoes, peeled and cut in 1 inch pieces
salt, to taste (optional)

Directions:

1. Combine mustard, oil, garlic, tarragon, paprika, and pepper flakes.
2. Wash potato pieces and pat dry with paper towels.
3. Add to spice mixture and toss to coat well.
4. Very lightly grease a baking sheet.
5. Add potatoes in a single layer.
6. Bake in a preheated 350F oven for approximately 35 minutes or until potatoes are tender.
7. Sprinkle with salt, if desired.

Makes 4 servings.

4:38PM - Corollary to Previous Post

If you take offense if someone calls you a woman, think about the experience of women in your environment. If you don't want to be compared to an animal, think about why that is...and how it would be to actually be an animal, especially an animal slated for slaughter. Stirred to violent thoughts or even actions at being called a queer? How would it feel to be homosexual and carry the burden of that unnecessary stigma?

It's about flaunting rebellion from indoctrinated stratified mindset and developing empathy for those who are degraded. Let's find our empathy muscles and flex them! :)

3:52PM - Movie Binge (discount coupon time!)

The Manchurian Candidate - Grim, Intense. Some of the blatant stereotyping is disturbing.

Elephant - Grim^3 because it's based on an event most Americans understand to be very realistic. I thought the visual metaphor in the last scene which pointed out, very graphically, the connection between animal and human victimization. Someday people are going to catch onto this fact. Another note: the Nazi death camps were designed after US slaughterhouses. It's the glue which holds stratified society together. IF violence or a particular type of degradation is normalized against one group, all one has to do is degrade one another group to to the status of one of that group to do the same thing to them. (Here's a horrible example: http://209.157.64.200/focus/f-news/1314304/posts ) This is a common way to absolve guilt of horrible violence...if we declare our enemies to be "animals", they deserve "it," right? And if a man in a society in which it is degrading for him to be compared to a woman is said to have behaved as a woman, then it becomes ok to treat him as a woman for purposes of humiliation (thinking of tampons placed in lockers by coaches of sports teams). It's only stratified mindset which allows these things to happen. So, why not upgrade the status of all to equal of consideration of experience and protection against violence and degradation? Each of us is only as safe as the most vulnerable among us so let's make those most prone to victimization invincible!

The Reagans - I recommend it. Scary in a very different way than above movies. Shows the horrific fallability of those in power.

Super Size Me - Definitely recommended. Especially Alex's detox diet. I felt nauseous just watching him eat all that crap. And I was stunned by the children in the introd chanting a fast-food ditty. I'd never heard that before. We were still singing ring-around-the-rosie when I was a kid.

6:19AM - Addition to UserInfo

Without ambition or initiative, the compact mass[majority] hates nothing so much as innovation. It has always opposed, condemned, and hounded the innovator, the pioneer of a new truth. ~Emma Goldman

Why would anyone want accept a status quo which participates in and normalizes the unnecessary slaughter of vulnerable beings? It seems counterintuitive to a stance of compassion for those at greatest risk for victimization. It's the elephant in the room which no one wants to see.
