music: The Arcade Fire - No Cars Go

[as you open your friend's page you find a mysterious scroll...]

I Aaronin 1. Interpol was awesome. I just want to get that out of the way. 2. The lead signer, and the guitarist (on the left side of the stage, I honestly couldn't see the right) are incredibly good looking men. Seriously. 3. To all those who were dancing at the Interpol show, I would like to refer you to "The Rapture" show for a brief lesson in "how to dance" (for Indie Kids). 4. Q and not U was alright. They sounded a lot different than I remember from when I was playing them at the radio station.

II Aaronin 1. I'm going to spend my lonely vacation working on an EP. I keep scrapping every musical project I undertake. 2. I think this one will work. 3. I don't mean success, I just want to make something that I'm happy with. 4. I really should invest in some better equipment, but there are too many shows coming up. 5. And my domain name is expiring soon. 6. I would like to start a serious musical project without my vocals. 7. This is a big step, I've decided that I really don't want to sing anymore. 7. But I am on the EP I'm working on. I spend so much time attempting to record decent vocals.

III Aaronin 1. I was considering renting Napoleon Dynamite at Blockbuster. 2. A man walked by me and said it was definitely worth renting, 3. But (and then he whispered somewhat under his breath out of earshot of his wife) only if you're high. 4. Is it worth seeing? Is it worth seeing only high? I think I'm the only one who hasn't seen it.

IV Aaronin 1. Needless to say, Life has been interesting the last few weeks in particular. 2. I think spring is coming, and I'm feeling fairly optimistic about things. 3. Those two are not necessarily connected thoughts. 4. Today I'm feeling quite relaxed, and unstressed. 5. The extreme state of relaxation may just be a result of sleep deprivation. 6. haha. 7. Fog.

mood: soo excited and giddy!
music: Robbers on High Street - Spanish Teeth

Dear Diary,

I finally asked ticketmaster out! OMG. I couldn't believe it. She so said yes! so we went out. and we have an awesome time. we talked about our lives and we even planned a second date! I was sooo excited. But then! Things got really fucked up. When the check came, it was about 22 for each of us right? Well we each ordered the ticket platter so, that's cool. We agreed to split the bill (dutch treat! how modern!) but when we looked at it we had to pay this "convenience fee" that added another 8 dollars each to the meal! when we complained, the waiter was so kind as to inform us that we missed yet another fee-the Bill processing charge! Suddenly a 40 dollar dinner turned into a 65 dollar debacle!

Needless to say, we left no tip. Despite the night I'm so excited about our next date! <3 <3 <3!

[TRIPTYCH]

I'm a girl in a coffee shop in 1983 with a thick french accent.

I'm a boy on a bridge in Vienna, thinking he's living a film noir.

I'm a woman reading Virginia Woolf because she saw The Hours.

I'm a man watching the hours tick by in drops of whiskey.

You're an anchronism too. But you won't admit it. Not here. You won't dare tell me that you wish to death that there was a need for revolutionary enlightenment thinkers in 2005. You send Robespierre off to the canvas gallows and throw sand in the fire. All the great philosophies have been unburied from the sands of obfuscation. All the great poems have been written; all the great fictions have been stated.. All that's left is to rebel against the status quo. I'm a punk writer The Horizon seems so bright on the Eastern Morning. and the Eastern Morning seems so bright as you watch it set in the west.

You're an anachonrism too. You feel it in your bones when you creep down the stairs in the middle of the night avoiding the creaking spots.

music: Colin Meloy - The Bachelor and the Bride

[Interview with Aaron Knoll [January 2005]]

Aaron Knoll, of Voban and Aaronin fame, has been relatively quiet as of late. His online weblog [Livejournal.com/~aaronin] has fallen mostly quiet as of late, and his record label [digitalisrecords.com] seems to have gone underground. Amidst all of this silence, the "low-fi pop songwriter with great potential" [splendid 9-01] is working beneath the airwaves in both his private and public life, to come up with a grand return that realizes, and perhaps steps beyond that potential.

Aaron, a lot has been made of your absence, can you tell us a bit about why, and perhaps why for so long?
A lot of it has to do with some changed [sic] in my state of mind, personally. Firstly, I've been investing a lot more time in my music. I've also been putting a lot more effort into my writing. I've been taking some classes I really enjoy to work on writing fiction. I've just been taking some time out to find more about what I want from my life, and I havn't been writing as much as some of my fans would like me to [laughs.] I don't even know how many are left?

I get the impression that you have some sort of direction now you didn't a couple of years ago. Could you please elaborate?
I've taken a liking to travel. I've decided that I have to make that a part of my life while I'm still young. I've also decided on some direction in my artistic endeavors. I've been writing a lot more, and think perhaps that will become a much larger part of my life than I would have expected.

Where do you want to travel specifically?
[laughs.]

During your sabbatical, what artists have inspired you, or been influential during this tumultuous past year?
Definitely, the Decemberists. Colin Meloy has a unique voice and a brilliant sense of songcraft. I also have really been listening to the Arcade Fire and Joy Division. Joy Division is one of those bands that I regret never really appreciating at a younger age. I've always liked them, but the other day my friend sent me one of their CD's and I was like, 'how did I miss this for so long, they're brilliant.'

Do you have any plans for your return?
Yes and No. I have definite plans and energy for something, but right now it's sort of undefined. I might be getting involved in something more experimental with cellos and clarinets. I think it's time for a bit of a departure from the singer-songwriter thing for a while. I need to do something. Whatever it is, it won't be Voban and it won't be Aaronin. I'm not out to relive the past. It's time for something new. and if not, I've been asked about interest in an industrial band that's like "modest mouse and radiohead in a fist fight." [laughs.] I don't know. Maybe I'll stick with whistful emo cello pop and paula cole covers.

So there's no album in the works?
Loosely. There's "5" which would be a collection of home-recordings I've worked on since "Epicycles around town." But, there's no plans of a tour in support of that. If there's any shows, they'll be in support of whatever else I work on.

Well that's a bit of a disappointment.
I thought Interviewers were supposed to be objective?

[laughs.] So tell me a bit about what you'd want to be up to right now. If you could be anywhere in the world, right now, where would you be?
You're really pulling out all the stops here. Umm. Ibiza?

Why Ibiza?
I guess I don't know. I think the answer could really be anywhere. - though warm would be a big improvement - [laughs] Though I'd also settle northern europe. amsterdam- or getting lost in Tokyo.

Have you seen "Lost in Translation"?
I love sofia coppola. Yes. I've seen. I'd prefer to get lost in another city, just to have a unique experience never had by anyone else before, but you know- getting lost in tokyo is a cultural reference point that, thanks to Bill Murray, a lot of people can sort of relate to.

So what are you reading right now?
A collection of British short stories collected by A.S. Byatt. I really love Byatt's work, so I guess I have to trust a collection that she put together.

Leave us with some parting thoughts, to tide us over until your next website update...
That's pretty broad. I guess I can say anything right? How about the best parts of life are the good books, the good music, and the people that you can share them with.

Thanks Aaron
Thanks a lot.

[My Annual Best of List: (with mp3s this year! wooo)]

Here's my annual best albums of the year list. It's tough every year to come up with the top 10 most defining albums for a given year (at least for me), but I think I did a good job of narrowing it down. As always, it's difficult to do, but here they are:
