Missing Diagram Designer

I discovered last night that there is no longer a Database Diagram Designer in SQL Server 2005. The current word is that the team responsible for this is considering whether to put it back in or not. This should not even be a question. Have you tried to create a relationship between two tables in Beta 2? This is really ugly and not necessarily intuitive. I was going to add this to the Beta 2 bug repository until it insisted I fill out a survey first and then I would receive a response in 48 hours and then I could enter my issue.

No thanks.

Unit Testing in Visual Studio 2005

I think I already said this over on Jason Alexander's blog but here it is again.

Unit Testing support should be included with all versions of Visual Studio 2005 and not just with Team System.

Virtual PC

I've been using Virtual PC for several months now and I think it's a great program. When I got the March CTP, I loaded it in VPC on my laptop since it is the most powerful machine I own. When I got the May CTP I decided I really wanted to run it somewhere other than the hard drive on my laptop. I have an external hard drive that connects with USB 2.0 so I decided that was where I wanted to load it. Now, being the lazy person that I am, I really didn't want to install another version of Windows XP so I decided I wanted to try to move the existing virtual drive from the hard drive on my laptop to the external drive. Staying with the lazy theme, I opened the settings for VPC, selected Hard Drive 1 and changed the address to the directory where the Virtual drive would reside on my external drive. Before I accepted the change I cut and pasted the .vhd file on the external drive and then clicked ok in the VPC settings. Click on the VPC instance in console and surprise! it worked!

Is that cool or what?

May CTP is Installed and Running!

I've had a lot of problems this week getting VS 2005 installed and running. Hopefully, the following is going to help others having similar problems.

When trying to create a winform app, if you cannot open the designer but instead receive an error informing you that there is no editor available for the file type '.cs', try the following:

1. Start a VS command prompt and type gacutil /cdl
2. Run devenv.exe /resetskippkgs
3. Run devenv.exe /setup

If you are having problems with the MSDN library, check this out.

I feel much better now that I have documented this.

It's Here! It's Here!

Since I installed Office 2003 some months ago, I had to revert to using Lotus Notes again since Notes Connector only worked for previous versions of Outlook. But no more!

Notes Connector 2003 is here!

Amost makes me want to run back to office and install it.
