Horse Sense

Oh, fer cryin' out loud.

I've heard enough from the cultural conservatives about Laura Bush's routine at the Correspondents' Dinner. It's all the latest (out)rage...especially the one about the horse. However, since these cultural cons have sunk the discussion to a level that is now inappropriate for some readers, you'll have to click on "read more" to see the rest of this post.

It's Always A Headlight

Today's tip: when transporting a ton of marijuana, make sure both headlights are working:

Felix D. Estrada and Jorge Mauricio-Zamora were charged in U.S. District Court with one count each of conspiracy to possess with the intent to distribute 1,859 pounds of marijuana and one count of possessing with the intent to distribute same amount of drugs. The two men were arrested Monday after the Kansas Highway Patrol stopped the semi-tractor trailer they were driving on Interstate 435 in Overland Park and discovered the drugs in the back of the trailer. The trooper noticed one of the truck's headlights was out and stopped it about 6 a.m. as the two men were eastbound on I-435.

Needed: New Sooner Baseball Coach

So the University of Oklahoma's baseball coach apparently made a racist remark about one of his players...to ESPN, displaying both the open-mindedness and intelligence that are the hallmarks of OU athletics:

Tuesday, before the telecast of the Oklahoma-Wichita State game on ESPN2 and ESPNU, Cochell used a racially-insensitive term in off-camera interviews with ESPN to describe Sooners freshman outfielder Joe Dunigan, an African-American.

In related news, I know this is kind of a Mark Mangino/Mike Stoops/Brent Venables move, but I'd be happy to be considered for the soon-to-be open position of head baseball coach at the University of Oklahoma.

Finals

It's that time of year again...for the last time. Five finals left, two and a half weeks. Time to study and outline and go temporarily insane.

Once finals are over and I've recovered I'll resume posting more frequently than I have over the past month. Also, I'll try to vary the content a bit more than I have over the past couple of weeks.

Full House: Having A Gay Old Time

My roommates and I have decided that Full House was in reality one big gay inside joke. As my roommate puts it:

Full House is a charming situational comedy based in San Francisco. It features a household where 3 grown men with jobs in the entertainment business try to raise 3 young girls. In San Francisco. 3 men living together. In entertainment. Raising 3 daughters. In San Francisco.

Floyd lays out the full reasoning on his site. Once you see the evidence--including the incriminating dialogue from the pilot episode--I think you'll agree that Full House was a show with definite homosexual tendencies. I mean, come on..."Uncle" Jesse?

"More Than Merely Philanthropic"

Another from the "you can't make this stuff up" files:

The 10th Earl of Shaftesbury, whose death aged 66 was confirmed yesterday, demonstrated the dangers of the possession of inherited wealth coupled with a weakness for women and Champagne.

That might be the best opening sentence of any obituary, ever. The rest of the obituary is just as entertaining, containing gems like this:

It was said, after his mysterious disappearance from a Cannes nightclub, that the 10th Earl, like Gladstone, had been devoting himself to helping vulnerable young girls working in nightspots on the French Riviera to start new lives. But as the mystery deepened, it seemed that his interest was more than merely philanthropic.

There's little that's more entertaining than a well-written obituary for a person who lived a colorful life.

Ba-a-d Idea

Oregon State football player caught drinking and driving...with a gay sheep:

Beavers player Ben Michael Siegert was apparently caught driving the getaway vehicle that whisked a ram away from the university's Sheep Center, according to police....The ram lives at the research facility on 35th Street near Campus Way and is part of a study on homosexuality in sheep, said Sheep Center manager Tom Nichols.

You can't make up stuff like this.

Puppies!

I attended my third Royals' game of the season yesterday (also, the third of the week) as part of my 21-game partial season ticket package. On the bright side, I got my hands on a John Buck batting practice jersey (Buck: batting .120 so far this season. What a tragically appropriate giveaway.). On the down side, the Royals are now 0-3 when I'm in attendance.

Maybe the games would be more entertaining if they took Floyd's suggestion, as recounted by dn:

FYI, Floyd once had an idea for homerun celebrations at Kaufmann Stadium. The scoreboard would flash "PUPPIES!!" as handfuls of puppies would be tossed earthward from atop the scoreboard. You probably had to be there.

...Before Peterman Was Cool

Back in the early 90's, my family discovered a great little company that offered unique merchandise. As good as their products were, the catalogs sent by The J. Peterman Company were even better. When the new catalog arrived every few months, I'd take an hour during the afternoon to just sit and read through the poetic product descriptions and the watercolor illustrations in the "Owner's Manual," as they called it. J. Peterman was one of my family's favorite little discoveries.

Then Seinfeld discovered Peterman, and it wasn't our family's own little discovery anymore. Everyone knew about this great little company with the cool catalogs...and now it wasn't so cool anymore. I went to college and then law school and stopped reading the catalogs and ordering the products. I didn't think about the company anymore except when certain Seinfeld reruns would air. For some reason, I was under the impression that the company was actually now defunct. This morning, however, in the course of my browsing, I found that J. Peterman is very much not defunct. So if you like simple elegance...products that are new but seem to be a throwback to an earlier age...browse on over there and take a look around. You'll enjoy it, even if you don't buy anything.

Thanks to Dan for getting this site linked on Lawrence.com. First Instapundit, then the Wall Street Journal, and now Lawrence.com. I've finally hit the big time...
