Local Latina Legend

Yesterday the local Latino community lost one of its legends. Becky Jaramillo was a journalist, activist and stalwart supporter of Hispanics in the area.

She bravely battled cancer for years on end while still working as an editor and reporter for Dos Mundos. Her stories were not only accurate and well researched but also comprised of powerful prose that often advocated for Latinos when no other news outlets were willing to provide coverage.

She was a pioneer, a class act, tenacious and talented . . . the very best of everything that comprises the term Latina.

Few reporters or writers leave such a lasting legacy with the communities they cover, Becky Jaramillo will be greatly missed both personally and professionally. (The Star)

Thanks for reading folks

Lots of new visitors this week. Lots of new blogs and spirited posting going on in the local blogosphere . . . it's all good. The great thing about blogs is that there is no authoritative voice, no final word, there are merely millions of individual voices communicating, yelling, linking, flaming and crying out. Very much like that joke about the thousand monkeys on typewriters and the time it would take them to come up with something akin to Shakespeare. And that's the way it should be, I think.

As always, thanks for reading have a fun and safe Saturday night. Take Care.

Kay "TIF" Barnes

EXCLUSIVE

Last night developers of the 1601 Jefferson project revealed to neighbors that they are hoping to use TIF money in order to finance their plans for luxury condos overlooking the city. The price range of the property would be more than one million dollars per unit.

What does this mean?

People with enough money to afford a living space worth a million bucks would be using YOUR TAX DOLLARS to finance their property.

Talk all you want about urban renewal and gentrification . . . in the end it comes down to a simple question: Do you want public money financing millionaires who want to live in luxury condos overlooking us all? So far, the mayor has yet to give her outright public support to the developers but this plan has her thin, witch-like fingerprints all over it. Currently, Country Club Kay is just returning from a vacation to Mexico, where she probably spent her time sending more local jobs south of the border.
