have a portfolio (7.9mb pdf).
10 17 2005: waaaaay too early this morning, we launched a freshly redesigned and rebuilt home for we are scientists, virgin music’s newest recruit. enjoy: it’s pink. with kittens! album release in the united kingdom is today, and in january for the united states. have an ep instead, for stateside chairdancing.—pk
09 23 2005: our longtime client gawker media launched their invite-only commenting system today. this is the culmination of a lot of backend development work from tim appnel, who developed the custom invitation system.—pk
09 15 2005: the design encylcopedia, a gift from under consideration to the design disciplines, is now live. i’m proud to say that i had nary a single thing to do with this—but su did: he built it. not an easy task. enjoy.—pk
09 05 2005: the devastation of new orleans has hit us quite hard. su and i and i met there; the city is our surrogate home.
without new orleans, su and i wouldn’t be a couple and pretty wouldn’t exist. we never would have met our friends jonno and richard, who patiently hosted us for the first few days of our relationship. i wouldn’t have met nick denton. and if that hadn’t happened, the face of gawker media would be quite different.
without that region, an irreplaceable part of our culture will end. the arts of the gulf coast cannot be synthesized—the buzzing humidity of the deep south is their only possible incubator.
chicagoans can donate to the mccormick tribune foundation, which will match 50% of donations for disaster relief.—pk
08 01 2005: the head of marketing at the mountain laurel center for the arts laughingly calls her currently employer “the little art house in the woods.” actually, that’s kind of a lie: the place is huge. we’re helping them kick off their first full season this year with a new site featuring custom imagery for each major event, a quickly-updateable schedule, and a design that has more to do with being outside that looking at the web. currently in progress, so don’t be scandalized by the occasional error.—pk
07 25 2005: thirstype, former host to my typeface collections, is now part of village. village is owned and operated by chester, friend for over a decade and fellow former thirst. pretty welcomes its new canadian overlords!
if you’re interested in any of my type collections, try fastgirls, gia or commodity.—pk
07 09 2005: wonderbureau, owned by jason (an old roommate of mine from my post-college years in knoxville), opens a new site for usa networks. you’ll recognize wb’s name from their help in bringing our vision for radar online to life. great work, jason.—pk
07 05 2005: su and i have just completed another round of imagery for longtime client hewitt associates. hewitt is the world’s largest provider of outsourced human resources. for their offices, we created a suite of award panels, a timeline, and seventeen large-scale illustrations. our work with hewitt begain in 2002 in a partnership with wdw design, who created interior architecture to house our design. our work is now shown in chicago, new york, boston, lincolnshire (illinois) bangalore and bangkok.—pk
07 01 2005: pretty officially welcomes milan today. we’ve actually been working with young milan for some time now. it’s a pleasure to finally be able to call him part of the family.
milan’s an astounding typographer and colorist. so far he’s lent a hand on a couple of gawker properties, jalopnik and oddjack—both of which feature custom typeforms he’s made—and radar. since we’ve promised not to dump him headfirst into the manhattan gossip whirlpool, you’ll see more from him elsewhere soon.—pk
06 28 2005: a few words from roger black of danilo-black and myself on aesthetics and visual organization at this is not a blog for nyu journalism.—pk
