On Monday evening, Cindy McCain and Laura Bush solicited hurricane donations at the Republican National Convention wearing vastly different footwear. Mrs. Bush opted for comfortable, unexciting slingbacks (at left) while Mrs. McCain went with considerably higher, coquettish black peep-toe pumps—hot!—and an imposing mustard-yellow dress that Salon called a "rain slicker."

Verdict: Cindy's been keeping up her tan better.

Republican footwear became an issue when Sarah Palin wore snappy red heels bearing uncanny resemblance to Dorothy's ruby red slippers to the announcement of her vice-presidential candidacy (lucky for the GOP, shoe bloggers unearthed them for  read more »

In St. Paul, a Funny Charity for a Worthy Cause

ST. PAUL—With much fanfare, this evening’s session of the Republican National Convention was turned into a fundraiser for hurricane relief. Laura Bush and Cindy McCain appeared onstage beneath a video screen that projected a web address, www.causegreater.com, which was set up by the McCain campaign. Visitors to the web site, as well as delegates in the hall and viewers on television, were redirected a charity called The Aidmatrix Foundation, along with several statewide organizations, some of which were likewise affiliated with Aidmatrix.

What is the Aidmatrix Foundation? On Fox News, correspondent Bret Baier referred to it as “eBay for charitable contributions.  read more »

Republicans Congratulate Republicans for Nonpartisan Disaster Preparation Effort

ST. PAUL—The latest word is that Hurricane Gustav has been downgraded to a Category 1 storm and that water levels in New Orleans are receding – strong and encouraging signs that the Crescent City and the rest of the Gulf Coast will be spared tragedy and destruction on the scale of Hurricane Katrina.

And now, at the Republican National Convention, the effort is underway to portray this good news as a triumph of Republican leadership.

Just before 5:00 p.m. (E.S.T.), with the scoreboards in the Xcel Energy Center prominently displaying the words “Country First,” First Lady Laura Bush was called to the stage, where she spoke of the human toll that the storm threatened to exact and the need for support from all Americans for any recovery effort.  read more »

The Show Goes On: Bush and McCain (Laura and Cindy) Talk About the Weather

Speaking now at the Republican National Convention, Laura Bush explained why President George Bush couldn’t make it.

“Our first priority now today is to ensure the security of those living today in the Gulf Coast region,” said Bush, who added, “When such events occur we are reminded that first we are all Americans.”

Dressed in white, she introduced the governors of the Gulf states, who, she noted, are all Republicans.

Governor Rick Perry of Texas appeared in front of a revving Air Force plane.

“We’re taking care of the citizens. That’s what we do,” he said.

Bob Riley, governor of Alabama, said he wanted to personally “thank President Bush for his leadership.  read more »

Laura Bush and Cindy McCain to Speak Tonight, But Without Segue Music

On a conference call just now, McCain campaign manager Rick Davis said that Laura Bush and Cindy McCain will make brief remarks during the Republican National Convention this afternoon and that Governor Sarah Palin had arrived in St. Paul.

“Governor Palin is in town, she got in last night,” said Davis, who also said that she had no public schedule. “She is working on her speech.”

Davis said that the first lady would introduce Cindy McCain after the official business of the delegates had taken place, at around 4:50 p.m., and that both their remarks would conclude about 20 minutes later.

“In keeping with the nonpolitical” nature of the day’s events, Davis said, there would be no dramatic music or videos between the two speeches.

The first lady gave an unofficially political speech at a delegate breakfast this morning.

After Laura Bush's speech, the delegation sat down for breakfast. Ricky Roberie, a 47-year-old delegate from Baton Rouge, said over a plate of eggs and grits that he was "very excited" to see the first lady who, he said, "is always proper."

When asked about her definitely-not-apolitical comments about the lack of experience in the Obama campaign, he said, "I was O.K. with that because it's true. She didn't say it to be politically aggressive—she is basically stating a fact. Mr. Obama does not have experience."

"Some might call it a political jab," he said. "But I don't because it's true."

Mike Bloomberg Will Be Available for Laura Bush

Mike Bloomberg and Schools Chancellor Joel Klein will be joined by Laura Bush at an elementary school in Manhattan tomorrow to make an announcement about library grants, according to the mayor's public schedule.

When President Bush visited an elementary school in Harlem last month, Bloomberg just happened to be in Mexico.

All of which could be seen, if we're looking for some deeper meaning here, as an indication of who the more popular Bush is in the White House right now.

Events for Friday, February 2, 2007

At 7:30 a.m. a Groundhog Day's prediction is made at The Staten Island Zoo.

At 9:40 a.m. Laura Bush joins a roundtable with doctors and patients to discuss the American Heart Association's "Go Red For Women" campaign, at the Bryant Park Hotel.

And in D.C., the Democratic National Committee holds their winter meeting.

A tidbit from the meeting of the Clinton Global Initiative at the Time Warner Center today: Laura Bush will participate in September's second Davos-on-Hudson.

Murdoch will be there too, of course. And the main underwriter, again, is Tom Golisano, incongruously seated front and center between his wife and Democratic partisan warrior John Podesta.

WOOD WAR XXXIX

Both tabs give a half-page to Coretta Scott King's memorial, each in its house style. The News presents a full panorama of the assembled presidents and first ladies, under a small-caps headline--dignified, neatly composed, and indecipherable from more than two feet away. The Post chops the same visual idea to its essence--George W. Bush, Laura Bush, Bill Clinton--and pops out a snappier headline, in a more readable font.

But on its lower half, the Post gets too brisk for its own good, compressing its local-news story to an indecipherable squib. The news is that a teenager phoned LGA with a bomb threat because she was running late for her flight. The Post burns two of its eight words--"LOVE" and "Beau"--on the tangential point that she was flying off to chase around after her boyfriend. It's not just in the dictionary where WHAT comes before WHY, fellas!

"PERV ATTACKS MED STUDENT," on the other hand, couldn't be any clearer.  read more »
