Introducing Dell Demps

At long last, we've got a definitive leader of the team's basketball operations. As with the coaching hire, the Hornets went through a thorough, yet quick search process. And just as with Monty Williams, there's reason to believe the Hornets have made a great decision to conclude the process.

After the jump, an introduction to your new GM.

Hugh Weber Expects to have GM by Tomorrow [Updated]

Hugh Weber, seen here looking kind of smug, hopes to announce a new GM by Wednesday.

Hugh Weber, seen here looking kind of smug, hopes to announce a new GM by Wednesday.

By collating information from multiple sources, it appears that Hugh Weber hopes to present Dell Demps, currently the Spurs' VP of basketball operations, as the new Hornets GM on Wednesday. First, from John Reid at the Times-Pic:

San Antonio Spurs vice president of basketball operations Dell Demps remains the frontrunner for the vacant New Orleans Hornets general manager's job according to sources, and team president Hugh Weber said Tuesday he would be disappointed if they don't name someone by Wednesday.

*snip*

Weber said he interviewed seven candidates.

"I would be disappointed if we're not talking about tomorrow a filled position,'' Weber said. "But again, in fairness to the individuals that have not been contacted, I'd would not say what we are down to."

A couple of minor details: Weber went on to state that doing the interviews at Summer League made the process go much faster. Demps is also a candidate for the Phoenix Suns' GM position, where he would not be in control of basketball operations. At New Orleans, Demps would have total authority on the basketball ops side of the organization.

The Field Guide to Commenting

Over the past two months, we've seen a great increase in readers and commenters on At the Hive. Conversation here has been, for the most part, smart and well-mannered. As more and more users access the site, now's as good a time as any to establish some site ground rules.

1. NO POLITICS

Any posts engaging in political partisanship will earn the commenter a warning. Obviously, with the sale of the team to Gary Chouest, the Hornets are inherently tied to politics to some degree. However, we can still discuss the team and ownership without turning At the Hive into the set of Crossfire.

2. NO RELIGION

Thou shalt not talk about religion.

3. NO PROFANITY

This will be enforced more leniently than rules one and two, but at the same time, we don't want one word comments in a game thread, for example. I understand that the average conversation, especially among sports fans, tends to be profane. That said, I think we can achieve better and more nuanced discussion by using the full capacity of the English language, rather than resorting to profanity.

Read about other, equallly fantastic restrictions after the jump!

Hornets on the Internets: No Surprises Edition

Hornets_on_the_internets_medium_medium_medium_medium

The Hornets are buzzing around the internets with vague press releases and strange interviews. First, via the Times-Pic, Chris Paul says he's happy with the changes in New Orleans:

Three-time All-Star point guard Chris Paul said he likes the current changes under way with the New Orleans Hornets and believes they are moving in the right direction involving their search to hire a general manager.

*snip*

Paul avoided speaking specifically about Jeff Bower's sudden departure after 15 years last week or his alleged wedding toast in New York last weekend, in which he predicted the formation of a big three with the New York Knicks involving himself and Carmelo Anthony - with the two joining newly acquired Amare Stoudemire.

It's pretty simple. He wants to stay in New Orleans, likes the direction the team is taking, but will leave if New Orleans isn't able to compete. Not particularly stunning.

So now we know that the Hornets have talked to three people

- Dell Demps, twice
- David Griffin, once
- Kevin Pritchard (his agent)

Any that I'm forgetting?

Quincy Quickly Quality

On draft night, I was exceptionally pleased with our 26th overall pick. We traded down, acquired another draft pick, shed salary, and still got a player whose statistics and skill set rivaled those of guys drafted in the teens. Q's play in summer league only enhanced my opinion of the selection.

On Saturday, we glimpsed Quincy's NBA potential. After the jump, a breakdown of 27 plays from Q's final Summer League game and what we can learn from them.
