The East Coast Bias: BIG EAST Roundtable, July - Part IV
GonzoBall recently participated in The East Coast Bias' BIG EAST Roundtable for July, where Eric SoHayda answered four questions pertaining to Seton Hall and the BIG EAST. We will post each part of this roundtable as TECB posts them on their blog. We encourage you to venture over there to read up on answers from an array of BIG EAST bloggers. In today's edition: Seton Hall, UConn, DePaul, Georgetown, Marquette, Pittsburgh, St. John's Villanova.
Q4: For the last 2 years, some media members have remarked that the Big East will be "down next year." Has the league been "down" recently (and define what down would mean to you) and will it be next year?
GonzoBall: Over the course of the last few years the mainstream media has thought that the Big East conference would be "down".
Of course the conference is going to be down, how many times have can one conference get two teams to the final four? Nine teams to the Big Dance? The Big East, in basketball, is what the SEC is in football; a conference that features the best teams with the most depth from top to bottom. Is the ACC good? Yes. Is the Big 12 good? Certainly. Can they compare to the Big East? Can Pat Sajak compare to Vanna White? No. If the Big East is "down" like this every year...doesn't life just stink??

The East Coast Bias: BIG EAST Roundtable, July - Part III

Q3: How is the recruiting for 2011 going? Who is your team looking at?
GonzoBall: Coach Willard and his staff are working hard hitting the tough recruiting trail and not just in the United States. Clearly a vast expansive ocean will not prevent some good players from overseas from coming to Seton Hall.
The first 2011 commit is that of Aaron Cosby from Kentucky in the good Ole USA and will be at the guard position. He is a good defender and able ball handler who will be a welcome addition to Coach Willard's roster.
The players who Seton Hall are involved with are numerous and the coaching staff is doing a great job of keeping that hush-hush and playing things close to the vest. Next year will be a huge year in terms of recruiting when as many as 5 scholarship players may leave. If Coach Willard thought he had holes to fill this year, he will have gorges to fill next.

Bobby Gonzalez Pleads Not Guilty
Gonzalez spoke during the five-minute arraignment only to verify his address in Harrison, N.Y. His attorney, Anna Cominsky, entered the plea on his behalf. Neither commented after the proceeding.
Gonzalez is accused of taking a satchel worth about $1,400 from the Polo Ralph Lauren store in The Mall at Short Hills on June 29. Police said he removed the sensor device from the satchel and walked out of the store without paying for it.
Did he really wear an un-tucked polo shirt to his court date? A court date in which he's pleading not guilty to shoplifting a Polo man-purse? He couldn't be bothered to wear a suit? Did he lease all of the suits he wore on the sidelines? Does any of this surprise you anymore? It certainly shouldn't. Click the photograph here for a full gallery of his day in court.
The East Coast Bias: BIG EAST Roundtable, July - Part II

Q2: Tell us about your recruiting class for next year (about 20 words per player if you need to describe them). Will they have a strong impact?
Arguably the biggest recruit to come to South Orange in four years was brought in by the Seton Hall administration, not the coach. After a tumultuous four years, a new coach has arrived in Kevin Willard.
While the players that have been brought in are important, a change in philosophy and execution might be the most noticeable difference in the 2010 Pirates. With a focus on defense and rebounding, Coach Willard will give the Hall some much needed stability on the sidelines.
In between the lines Coach Willard has brought in players from Europe including recent commit 6-11 Aaron Geramipoor who hails from England.
Teaming in the front-court will be Patrik Auda, from the Czech Republic as well as the first commit to Coach Willard, Anali Okoloji. Okoloji is a 6-8 forward who will see minutes that will enable Pope to have a breather. While Auda and Okolji are expected to immediately contribute to the team, Geramipoor is looked at as more of a developmental player and at 6-11 and 17 years old, the time will be given to him to develop.
Coach Willard also snagged Ole Miss transfer Eniel Polynice, who will be eligible to play this year after graduating in three years from Ole Miss. Polynice will be continuing his education at The Hall in a communications graduate program that Ole Miss does not offer, allowing him to play immediately for the Pirates. He will compete to break into the starting lineup or possibly settle as the 6th man. A former Bobby Gonzalez recruit, Fuquan Edwin is an explosive player at guard/forward position and the most highly ranked player coming out of high school to Seton Hall.

Part I: Q1: For 2010, which players will be leaving the squad? What holes will need to be filled?
GonzoBall: In 2010 the Seton Hall Pirates graduated Eugene Harvey and 5th year senior John Garcia. While Harvey played an integral part of the 2009 Pirates at the point guard position, he left the reigns of the team in the very capable hands of junior Jordan Theodore. Garcia gave everything he had on the court unfortunately, his knees just wouldn't allow him to play at the highest level for a sustained period of time.
Both of these captains will be missed on the court, but more than anything, they will be missed for their off the court leadership and experience. They were true warriors who fought to the end for the Blue and White.
Also leaving the team due to other circumstances were center Melvyn Oliver (transfer) and wing Robert "Stix" Mitchell, who was dismissed from the team last year.
The biggest hole for the Pirates that needs to be addressed is the health of forward Herb Pope. After collapsing during a workout in April, he spent a month in the hospital recuperating. If Pope is able to play again at the level the Pirate faithful have come to expect, South Orange should have a buzz not seen since the 2000-2001 season.
Another hole that needs to be addressed is at the center position. Pope played out of position at times and a backup for Pope needs to be found. Incoming freshmen may be expected to fill in for Pope at the 4 or 5 depending on which lineup the coach will run out on the floor.

JP's Reaction to the Aaron Geramipoor Signing
Editor's Note: J.P. is without internet access for the next few days so he's asked me to post this in his absence. You can reach him here: J.P. Guerette and on twitter, here: @JPGuerette
The difference between Bobby Gonzalez and Kevin Willard is practically black and white when it comes to the recruiting trail. Whereas Gonzo's over-the-top, shall we say, "enthusiasm," netted a few recruits per offseason, Willard's confident calmness appears to be paying off in droves compared to his predecessor.
According to Adam Zagoria of SNY and Zagsblog.com, Seton Hall signed another freshman for next season- 6'11", 225-pound Aaron Geramipoor from Manchester, England.
Geramipoor (what a name! I'm already thinking of possible nicknames for him.) was a teammate of fellow Pirate incoming freshman Patrik Auda (who I've dubbed "The Auda Convertible," by the way) at Canarias Basketball Academy. He averaged 20PTS/11REB/3BLKs per game last season for CBA.
In addition, he also plays for England's U-18 National team, where he not only starts, but averages over 8PTS/8REB as well.
Coach Willard on the signing:
"Adding another talent from the Canarias Basketball Academy, one the premier schools in Europe, will bolster our frontcourt lineup for next year and beyond... Aaron is incredibly long and has great tools for a man his size. We look forward to his growth in our system and believe he can be a real asset moving forward."
JP's ANALYSIS: I can't go on much here because I've never seen the guy play. There aren't even any YouTube videos on him. In the linked article from Zagoria above, he says that Geramipoor is "regarded as having good hands and footwork in the paint." Regardless, you can't teach height, and with the departure of Melvyn Oliver, Geramipoor is now the tallest Pirate, and thus will almost certainly get playing time given the stats he's put up in his career with CBA. Not to mention, the Pirates will have to spell Herb Pope for stretches of time this season and Geramipoor will certainly add depth along with sophomore Ferrakohn Hall.
Follow the jump for more on the recruiting class as a whole and what it means for next season.
6'11 Englishman, Aaron Geramipoor C, Signs With Pirates
Nice work by Willard in landing a true center for the '10-'11 campaign. Geramipoor is 6'11/225 and a former teammate of fellow recruit, Patrik Auda, where the two played together for the Canarias Basketball Academy. Aaron averaged 20PTS/11REB/3BLK last season for CBA and is currently playing for England's U-18 national team.
Where I Come From: EA Sports NCAA Football 2011 Available Now
This post is sponsored by EA Sports NCAA Football 2011
When you go to a particular school or grow up around college football, you are more than just a fan. It's who you are. We thought we could leverage this pride in your roots and show that "where you come from" is more than just a statement about geography. By positioning NCAA Football 11 as a game that understands this pride and is authentic to these traditions, the takeaway should be that anything that is in college football is in NCAA Football 11.
And this doesn't just include game play (though that's a huge part of it). It's rivals and mascots; it's legends and stories. It's those things that are at the very fabric of the game itself. Of course the game is great this year as well. With authentic entrances, mascots and specific offenses for each team, the term "where I come from" takes on a much larger meaning. While playing NCAA Football 11 is ultimately a great sports sim, it should also give you a sense of the pride and emotion one has for being a fan of a team they will never not be a part of.
