MARION, IL (KFVS) - A Marion man wants to erect a religious monument in downtown Marion, on the town square.
Ken Kessler got the idea to place a monument with the ten commandments on it, after seeing a similar one in downtown Mount Vernon, Indiana.
"I saw that monument sitting in front of the courthouse there in Mount Vernon, and I thought it would be fitting for a continuing foundation of faith for the folks here in Marion," Kessler said.
He knows not everyone in the community will agree with his idea.
"If our church underwrote it then we'd probably put it on our own property. But, if it comes together by donations from throughout the community we'd like to put it on the square, if the council approves," said Kessler.
Some of the people in the Marion say they wouldn't mind seeing a religious monument downtown.
"Can't say that it would bother me. I don't think it would be a bad idea," said Joshua Smith.
"It wouldn't bother me any, I'm for it. I don't really see a problem with it," said Rachel Schultz.
Kessler couldn't agree with them more.
"It would serve as a reminder to hundreds of people day by day. So I think it would be a good thing," Kessler said.
The next step for his plan is to make a formal proposal to the Marion City Council. They will have the final say as to whether or not the religious monument can be placed on city property.
