Senior Editor Jennifer Duffy revisits the race: For months, all signs pointed to a potentially competitive Senate race in California, the first the state has seen since the early 1990s. But, if Republicans were really going to be able to mount a credible challenge to Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer, a few things needed to go right. So far, they have, starting with the nomination of former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina.
Given Fiorina’s strengths as a candidate and her ability to put some personal money into the race, combined with the national political environment and California’s beleaguered economy that has voters clamoring for change, this contest is shaping up to be one of the most competitive of the cycle. While Fiorina still has a lot to prove, the race moves to the Toss Up column.

Chuck Grassley and Democratic attorney Roxanne Conlin from the Solid Republican to the Likely Republican column, and we did so without comment. Given some recent developments that frankly have very little to do with this race, we are moving it back to the Solid Republican column.
