All the Panthers' 2010 Picks

Florida Panthers News

More depth down the middle; and as OTF's Dirk Hoag observes, Panthers Assistant GM Mike Santos continues to scour for low-cost - and low-risk - talent from his former employer.

The report states Florida gave up a conditional 5th round pick in 2011.

"There’s certainly going to be a lot more eyes on me than on other players, just because of where I went (third overall in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft). It makes you a little more confident, but it does add to the pressure."

Panthers prospect D Erik Gudbranson, commenting on his status among other invitees to Hockey Canada's World Junior Team development camp, via The Telegram.

Panthers Links: where were we again?

Been a long but enjoyable few days away from home - only now beginning to catch up - but here's a cheap cop-out little of what we ran across over the last week or so from the haunts of Stanley C. after the jump...

Panthers latch on to Cincinnati Cyclones as new ECHL affiliate

Cyclones_medium

Replacing the departed Florida Everblades, the Panthers (and by association, the AHL Rochester Americans) have reached an agreement with the 2010 Kelly Cup champion Cincinnati Cyclones of the ECHL.

According to the club's press release, this appears to be a one-year agreement on what is - presumably - a joint-affiliation with existing parent Nashville Predators.

And yes, there are several Kevin Bacon-style connections to be made between the four organizations: Panthers Assistant GM Mike Santos was a longtime manager with the Predators, while new Rochester head coach Chuck Weber was Cincinnati's former bench boss over the past few seasons who resigned to accept the Amerks gig. The Cats will host a two-game Rookie Tournament vs Nashville in mid-September.

How Florida plans to utilize this new partnership remains to be seen. The affiliation with the Everblades was beneficial in terms of geography alone, and then rarely: so few Panther prospects were assigned to Estero that sending them back to junior or loaning them to other clubs or whatever might have been wiser. Carolina ran the show from top to bottom.

With the influx of talent witnessed in recent months, this could be a rather valuable partnership when viewed as more than a simple "waypoint" for in-between prospects, as was the case with the 'Blades.

Wednesday Panthers Caterwaul

Having just concluded a fantastic whirlwind trip - by car, no less - to Caps Territory, I'm currently getting up to speed on the couple of minor transactions and Panthers newsbites from the past several days (which will inevitably result in a massive mail-it-in link-dump this evening; stand by). Much of it might be rather old news to some of you by now, but we're kinda in the middle of summer and all...

That being the case, thought we'd open things up to the floor for now regarding anything you may wish to discuss in the meantime. Oh and hey: how 'bout the newly modified LBC logo? Carries a bit more of a regional feel now. Amazing what a couple of plants will do to warm up a house.

Another former Panthers player ends up in Tampa. Center Dominic Moore was signed for two years at $2.2 million by the Lightning. Not a bad deal for a guy who was signed by the Panthers after the start of the season last year. His excellent performance in the playoffs with the Canadiens is likely what got him a deal before training camp this year.

From the official site:

Bill Torrey Tribute Night will honor original Team President, current Alternate Governor and Hockey Hall of Fame member Mr. William A. Torrey with a special pre-game banner-raising ceremony, South Florida Hockey Den of Honor case dedication, in-game tribute, and more as the Cats take on his former team in the Islanders.

How long overdue is this? Kudos to the club for - finally - setting it straight.

Go get 'em, Dale!

In case you weren't aware, Florida Panthers general manager Dale Tallon qualified for starter status in this weekend's U.S. Senior Open at Sahalee Country Club in Sammamish, WA. His tee-off times and grouping for Thursday and Friday:

  • 9:15 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. -- Dale Tallon, Lake Forest, Ill.; A-Scott Sullivan, Grand Junction, Colo.; Steve Krause, Hales Corners, Wis.

And yes, we said "U.S. Senior Open", which may differ from the Waterbury Open in several key aspects. Inject obvious and overused Shooter McGavin line here. Then again, at least Happy had a Whalers banner in his bedroom. But come to think of it, Gilmour had nothing on this.

For the uninitiated, this is considered a Big Deal. Featuring golf legends such as Mark Calcavecchia, Paul Azinger, Fred Couples, and Tom Watson - among many, many others - Dale has the opportunity of a lifetime; a fantasy camp, where the putts count, in the real world. Very cool.

And to you haters out there crying about the Cats' GM prancing around a golf course for less than a week - in the absolute dead of summer - when he should be aggressively pursuing overpriced UFA deadwood which doesn't fit The Plan: he's entitled to a life, so enjoy the weekend. Let the Rangers have their delusions.

Rounds three and four will be televised by NBC Sports on Saturday and Sunday from 4-7pm ET. If you never gave a hoot about golf (these are the FLORIDA Panthers, yes?), here's your excuse to become a fan for several days; the folks here can help you along as well. Besides, when's the last time a Panther received national exposure on a Big Three network? Other than this guy, of course. Soak it up and savor what may be a pretty sweet few days.

Tallon had previously won the Canadian Junior Golf Championship in '69 but (thankfully) stuck to pucks, becoming Vancouver's first-ever draft pick in 1970.
