Olsen Field Renovations

Recruiting Update II
Brandon Alexander evidently survived Mack Brown's jedi mind tricks, and Brown and his five other cronies left Alexander's house without a commitment last night. Alexander is visiting Baylor today and has a scheduled visit to Arkansas this weekend. I was under the impression that Alexander wanted to play in the SEC, so this Arkansas trip should be interesting. I think Aggie target Andrew Peterson is visiting Arkansas this weekend, also. It would be a major coup for the Razorbacks if they landed those two. I cannot understand why everyone is so worked up over the 3 star Alexander.
Wish More Coaches Would Do This
It would make the word "commit" mean something.

The win sets up a huge game against #1 Baylor on Sunday
Thursday Thoughts
- ESPN's David Ubben as an interesting look at his postseason All-Big 12 football team from last season, and their recruiting rankings. Among interesting finds, Von Miller was a three-star recruit and the #37 defensive end in the nation. DE Lucas Patterson was also a three-star recruit - at offensive guard. The one correlation between recruiting ranking and college success seems to be with junior college recruits, who seem to have a seamless transition between starring at two-year schools and starring at four-year schools. This could simply be because after two years in a junior college, evaluators have a better idea of what they can do. The findings, however, do show the importance of talent evaluation, proper use of personnel, and development at the college level.
- It looks like ESPN's texas network is causing some people to question the NCAA compliance issues involved in having a one-school network televising high school games. ESPN has said they want a significant amount of high school coverage on the new network, while A&M; has been very vocal about questions of compliance and whether the network would give texas an unfair recruiting advantage. I'm just glad $Bill is trying to get out ont he forefront of this, and we have people like Gary Blair monitoring the situation. I think Coach Turgeon is much too optimistic about the NCAA and the organization being pro-active. I don't think that there is any doubt that being able to show high school athletics on their network would be an advantage for texas, and I think it should be limited, if not completely prohibited. Let Fox and ESPN show high school athletics on other channels, not on the texas network. The whole idea of the network is to provide coverage of texas, its athletics, and "cultural" programming. If ESPN can't creat a channel that will survive with that programming alone, maybe they should re-think their investment in this network.
- I read this story of rhabdomyolysis hitting 13 Iowa football players with great interest. Given that they've been doing these same workouts for years, and that they haven't had any previous issues, I'm seriously wondering if a contributing factor might have been drug use by some of the players involved. It will be interesting to see if Iowa decides to test these players again now for drugs after this incident, even though such tests would be kept confidential, and we would never know the results. I don't think this is some just random freak coincidence, though.
Recruiting Update
I wish I could be the bearer of great news but right now the Ags are closing the recruiting season with a whimper. As I write this, Mack Brown and 6 other coaches from the tu staff are in Brenham DE Brandon Alexander's house trying to convince him to commit to tu. This is a kid that the Ags have been on since September and that tu only really started recruiting in December. Somehow Mack Brown has been able to convince Alexander that even though they showed no interest until as of late, they really want him now. I have seen this recruitment compared to Tevin Mims two years ago. The sips swooped in at the last minute to gain a commit from Mims in order to keep him from coming to A&M. His scholarship was pulled after this season. I have seen sips claim that they need Alexander because their depth chart at DE is so bad. I have a hard time seeing how they can have a barren depth chart when they just brought in Jackson Jeffcoat, Reggie Wilson, and Greg Daniels.
I have already discussed the situation with Floyd Raven. the rumor is that our coaches gave Raven an ultimatum and he chose Ole Miss. I have no idea whether this happened or not. Like I have said previously, with Raven you are going to have to wait until signing day to see. If we did give him an ultimatum then I am fine with it because I cannot think of a single one of these "flaky" recruits who ended up a difference maker on the field.
Seagoville TE Andrew Peterson has whittled his choices down to A&M or Arkansas. This kid just seems like the type who ends up at Arkansas to me. The Razorbacks have done very well in South Dallas recently. What Arkansas has going against them is they currently have 5 TEs already on their roster and Peterson evidently is adamant about wanting to play TE. We will have to see how this one works out, but I would say it is 50/50 right now.
A&M coaches are doing an in home visit with Boyd Anderson (Fl) LB Shaun Ward tonight. Ward is a longtime commit who has not been shy about expressing his intent to follow in Von Miller's footsteps. He and USC commit Ken Turene have set a visit to Lubbock this weekend. Sounds to me like Marcus Roberson enjoyed the ladies in Lubbock and suggested to his friends that they too make the trip. I am not concerned about Shaun Ward flipping to the Techians.
Nostalgia: SWC Family Portrait From 1969

Here we are, taking a little look back at where we've come from. The thoughts of some of our conference brethren at the time is fairly obvious:
Baylor: The Bears were 0-10 in 1969 under Bill Beall. Beall was the man who preceded Grant Teaff. The Bear is screeching with indignation because he just saw someone dancing off camera. The winless season didn't help his attitude, either.
Texas Tech: After a 5-5 season in 1969, the Red Raider was feeling a little ornery, like he belonged in this group. Ignore the Coke bottle glasses and his repeated requests to go out back and play cowboys and indians with him.
texas: The horns were 11-0, undefeated national champions in 1969. This was right in the middle of their 30-game win streak, and you can see how puffed up and proud the steer is. Notice how his horns stand out in the crowd. Look at his eyes. He is high on the marijuana smoke and good times in Austin in 1969.
Texas A&M: Ol' Roc is pissed off. They've put him between that g*dd*mn steer and that preppy sumb*tch Peruna from Dallas. A 3-7 record in '69 doesn't help his mood. He hates being here more than he hates Vietnam protestors and Communists.
SMU: The eyes, the face, the snarl, the 3-7 record: none of this makes Peruna happy. If that effing Bear doesn't shut up, he's gonna get medieval on that Baptist @ss.
Arkansas Razorback: He's still pissed about blowing the lead in the Big Shootout, and it shows. His eyes are glazing over; he hasn't let it go yet.
TCU: He's a mythical creature just happy to exist, and is looking behind the camera for his cousin, the equally mythical unicorn. He knows his chances of seeing a unicorn are as likely as him winning a national championship.
Rice: Jolly good sporting fellows, these chaps, a great group of fellows to hang out with, we must get together for a study group.
(H/T to Spencer Hall.)
Tuesday Thoughts
- It seems like I'm not the only person to connect the dots on the ESPN-texas television deal, and conclude that it seems too much like a payoff after a backroom arrangement; Ben Dial of The Sports Jury comes to the same conclusion after a lengthy look at all the players, and what happened last Summer. Dial just comes right out and accuses texas and ESPN of collusion, a point I haven't arrived at yet, but he does make a convincing argument. The question now, of course, is how A&M will react to the creation of ESPN-texas and the possible formation of the Sooner Network in Norman. If OU is able to get their network off the ground, and ESPN has the texas network up and running, and we're still sitting here listening to $Bill talk about the possibility of a television network with the remaining 8 schools in the Zombie 10 (the Big 8 Network, for nostalgia sake?), I would hope such a lack of leadership would lead to Byrne's ouster. Given the leadership shown so far by parts of A&M's administration, I am not sure we have a person in place strong enough to make that move at this time, though.
- I read the emerging Robert Burton-UConn story with great interest. Moving past the early reaction of "Wow, funny, a guy wants his money back because he doesn't get to play athletic director after giving millions to the school", you get to the crux of the matter: UConn athletic director Jeff Hathaway struggles cultivating his school's top donors, and (if Burton is to be believed) keeping his coaches happy. I do think Burton is asking for a lot of input and say for combined donations of more than $7 million to the school and athletic department (FWIW, Bernard Richardson donated more to the 12th Man Foundation to help complete the Zone at Kyle Field than Burton's family combined has donated to UConn), but there is something to be said for keeping your top donors involved and feeling valued. If Burton really wants to learn how to donate moeny and control a school and athletic department, he needs to head over to Stillwater, and check out Boone Pickens' fiefdom.
- There is an interesting story on Jackson State quarterback Casey Therriault I highly recommend reading on ESPN.com. I remember hearing about a juco QB from College of the Sequoias being involved in an incident that left a man in a coma, but never really looked into it. It is nice to see that a positive has come out of this whole situation, and Therriault has another yet left at Jackson State.
- After watching Colorado's Cory Higgins and Alec Burks in the Buffs 82-78 loss to Kansas tonight, I think we've found another team that will give us major problems because of their guard play. Tad Boyle is working wonders in Boulder in resurrecting that program.
- Tomorrow night when texas plays Oklahoma State, OSU will be recognizing the ten year anniversary of the 10 athletic department and support staff members who died in a plane crash after leaving Boulder following a 2001 basketball game. My lasting memory of that time was of the ever-stoic Eddie Sutton breaking down during the memorial service they held a week after the crash. There will be a special halftime ceremony to memorialize the 10. Keep a good thought for OSU tomorrow as they relive a painful time for their school and basketball program.
