Late Night: Greetings From The Professional Left |

Always trying to move hippies to the right... (photo: Neubie on Flickr)
Hi, I’m Ed, and I’m a professional leftist. Here’s my message to you, President Obama, and your spokesman, Robert Gibbs.
I’m big on baby aspirin and some eye-drops for a vision issue. That’s about it for drugs. Oh, and caffeine and ibuprofen. I admit to being both a professional writer and a leftist. I don’t get paid for either.
That may be why reading Robert Gibbs’ views of me and my writing is so aggravating. You and he and your Senior Administration Officials don’t have any idea who I am, or who my colleagues are. That’s because you make no effort to find out. We have readers, Mr. President, hundreds of thousands of readers. That doesn’t happen just because we are professionals, but because people want to know what we think. You don’t.
I have a set of principles about the way society should function. I write about those too, and name people whose ideas motivate me, including Albert Camus, Richard Rorty, Hannah Arendt, and John Rawls. You have never done that, and it makes me think you have no principles.
I don’t insult people who disagree with me. You do, and so do your Senior Administration Officials.
In my first post on this site, I argued that we should demand that you pursue accountability for specific acts of the prior administration. You preferred to court the Party of Bad Faith rather than condemn its violations of our criminal laws.
Where is the accountability for the people who wrecked the economy? No bankers were fired, Larry Summers and Timothy Geithner and Ben Bernanke screwed up and got promoted, Robert Rubin led the deregulation craze and you listen to him and his protégés.
If you click my name, you can read in detail why I think you have failed the left and the country, in detail, with facts and reasoning on full display. It’s a lot easier to punch the air where a dirty hippie might be than to deal with my views, let alone those of my colleagues.
You think I should be a cheerleader for you? Why?

Looking For A Bipartisan Campaign Issue? |
By: Eli Tuesday August 10, 2010 6:01 pm |
Attention Democrats: If you want to campaign on something that appeals to American voters across the political spectrum, how about campaign finance? Overwhelming majorities of Democrats, Independents, and Republicans believe that large corporations and their lobbyists have more control over our government than they do, and want to see candidates who will give us our government back.

BP Escrow Fund Dependent on Additional Drilling? |
By: David Dayen Tuesday August 10, 2010 4:25 pm |
BP makes their money from drilling for, and selling, oil, and so their continued viability in running that business affects whether they have the cash available to pay out the $20 escrow fund for compensation to those hit by the oil disaster. But the deal between BP and the government apparently makes that explicit, and in particular their Gulf of Mexico drilling operations; future drilling revenues are BP’s leverage to permit more exploration and drilling.
How Degrading Is DADT? |

By every measure, Cadet Katherine Miller has been an exemplary officer candidate. But because of the military’s discriminatory policy towards homosexuals, she resigned, and the Army lost exactly the sort of person it needs more of.
House Passes State Fiscal Aid Bill |
By: David Dayen Tuesday August 10, 2010 2:45 pm |
With relatively few defections from the caucus, House Democrats passed a bill providing $26.1 billion dollars to states for their Medicaid programs and education budgets, by a count of 247-161. All Democrats but 3 supported the bill, and all Republicans but 2 opposed it. The specific tallies will be released shortly.
Earlier, Democrats passed the rule on the bill with more Democratic defections, 229-173.
Obama vs. Obama on the War |
By: Jane Hamsher Tuesday August 10, 2010 1:59 pm |
As I wrote earlier, if the White House is wondering why Americans are disappointed with Obama, it’s isn’t because of the criticisms of the “progressive left.” They can find the answer in the gap between what he sold himself as during the campaign, and the policies he has affirmatively pursued as President.
Not a Drug Addict, Mr. Gibbs – My Family is Suffering |
By: wavpeac Tuesday August 10, 2010 1:10 pm |
After hearing Mr. Gibbs’ remarks about “the professional left” needing drug testing, my blood began to boil. This diary is an attempt to share a slice of the middle America pie which has valid complaints about the job left undone by President Obama. Sure, Obama has tried — but when you are bleeding to death, a bandaid is little comfort.
