CIR Members Hit the Streets for Victorious NY State Senate Candidate

After a long and careful process, CIR's New York delegates decided to endorse Gustavo Rivera in his race against incumbent Pedro Espada for the 33rd State Senate seat in the Bronx. CIR’s organizational support helped lift the relatively unknown Mr. Rivera to a resounding victory on primary day. Moreover, the input and ideas of residents helped to shape the policy contours of the race.

At First-Ever Northeast Regional Meeting, Delegates from Three States Strategize the Future of Work Redesign

On Saturday, September 11, 2010, CIR delegates from New York, Massachusetts, and New Jersey came together for the CIR's first Northeast Regional Meeting.  The full day event provided residents the opportunity to share their common experiences from across the country and to strategize how best to move forward on the issues of quality improvement and work redesign within their hospitals.

Change Is Coming to St. Barnabas Hospital

Legal Victory Paves Way for Residents’ Voices to Finally Be Heard
Almost a year after the resident physicians at St. Barnabas Hospital voted on whether to join CIR, their votes were unsealed and counted on June 11, 2010.  With 119 voting in favor of the union and only two against, it was a resounding victory for the residents who have fought for almost two years for a union.  An additional 47 ballots were not included in the vote count because of legal challenges from the hospital.

For the residents who started the organizing campaign in 2008, it was a sweet victory. Many had already started to discuss concrete improvements they could negotiate when the hospital comes to the bargaining table.

The danger we face was brought home in 1999 when CIR member Valentin Barbulescu died in a post-call, single-car accident. Ask any resident: our long work hours put us at serious risk for car crashes, needle stick injuries, complications of pregnancy, and depression.
