bad day for hate speech
one down, 58,000 to go...nytimes:
dr. laura schlessinger, the conservative talk radio commentator under fire for repeatedly using a racial epithet, announced on tuesday that she was ending her long-running radio show.
dr. schlessinger made the announcement on tuesday night on “larry king live,” saying she made a decision not to renew her contract when it expires at the end of the year and suggesting that she did not want her opinions and language, however provocative, to be muzzled.
“i want to regain my first amendment rights,” she said. “i want to be able to say what’s on my mind and in my heart and what i think is helpful and useful without somebody getting angry, some special interest group deciding this is the time to silence a voice of dissent and attack affiliates, attack sponsors. i’m sort of done with that.”
but she stressed that she was not retiring, only ending her show, and would continue to write books and appear at speaking engagements.

the trouble with harry
wtf?
what we can't understand is why somebody in a position of authority, perhaps the president, since the senate majority leader won't do it, doesn't come out and say:
listen, you yahoos. the muslims that want to open the cordoba community center are not only not the same guys that smashed into the world trade center, they hate those guys as much as we do! it's a completely different set of people!
and before you get all self-righteous and cry that it "isn't bigotry," just because you oppose a "mosque" (which it isn't) being "built on ground zero" (which it won't be) because that's "hallowed ground" (which happens to have 5 strip clubs and numerous liquor stores in a three block radius thereof...how frakkin' hallowed is that?), let me remind you of this:
you are bascially ascribing responsibility for an terrible event to a separate group of people who simply share characteristics with the actual culprits of said event. that is the textbook definition of bigotry!
you morons.

ground zero sum game
steve benen finds republicans w/sense:
this morning, mark mckinnon, a former strategist for george w. bush, said of his own party, "usually republicans are forthright in defending the constitution. and here we are, reinforcing al qaeda's message that we're at war with muslims.... i see a bad pattern where we're headed as a republican party."
michael gerson, bush's former chief speechwriter, added today, "those who want a president to assert that any mosque would defile the neighborhood near ground zero are asking him to undermine the war on terrorism."
william saletan noted the ways in which leading republicans have become allies of osama bin laden's propaganda campaign. jeffrey goldberg also explained two weeks ago: "i know feisal abdul rauf; i've spoken with him at a public discussion at the 96th street mosque in new york about interfaith cooperation. he represents what bin laden fears most: a muslim who believes that it is possible to remain true to the values of islam and, at the same time, to be a loyal citizen of a western, non-muslim country."
clearly, the vast majority of the gop, and most of the american public, doesn't want to hear this. it's easier to believe that muslim americans are all dangerous (they're not) and now they're trying to build a mosque at ground zero (which isn't true, either).
but if critics would just pause to catch their breath and consider reason, they'd see there's no value in helping bin laden's dangerous scheme.

gibbs is no stranger
to slimming the left.
on november 7, 2003, a strange new group no one had ever heard of called "americans for jobs & healthcare" was quietly formed and soon thereafter began running a million dollar operation including political ads against then-frontrunner democratic presidential candidate howard dean. the commercials ripped dean over his positions or past record on gun rights, trade and medicare growth. but the most inflammatory ad used the visual image of osama bin laden as a way to raise questions about dean's foreign policy credibility. while the spots ran, americans for jobs through its then-spokesman, robert gibbs, a former kerry campaign employee refused to disclose its donors. - common dreams(h/t - crooks and liars)
