Old Larry wrote on March 13, 2007 12:33 PM:We can only hope the AJ announces his immediate resignation at the scheluled press conference. Then Bush sends a lap dog replacement to the Senate for confirmation. The Senate delays the confirmation seemingly forever. NO AJ IS BETTER THAN ANY BUSH APPOINTEE.

Englischlehrer wrote on March 13, 2007 12:35 PM:My interest in politics has increased so much in the past 6 months that I know that the Attorney General is going to give a press conference in 2.5 hours and I have an idea or rather ideas of what he might say.
Would he still be eligible for arrest and indictment if he quits today?

No chance this is a resignation speech. Nada.
Dem-agog wrote on March 13, 2007 12:38 PM:There can be only two reasons for the press conference:
1] To Resign.
2] To Lie.
My money's on #2.

None of the above. He's entering the Republican race for President . . .
SJH wrote on March 13, 2007 12:45 PM:Insiders tell me he´s going to announce that he has once again modified the Constitution to make lying to Congress and politically motivated firings of USAs legal for the Attorney General.
Joe Buck wrote on March 13, 2007 12:45 PM:I hope someone brings up the Saturday Night Massacre of 1973. Yes, Richard Nixon had the legal authority to fire Archibald Cox, just as Gonzales will claim the legal authority to fire US attorneys. But this act was the beginning of the end for Nixon.
Gonzales is the main man whispering in Bush's ear that he is a king, that he can do anything. If he won't resign, then Congress needs to remove him, by impeachment if necessary.

The lies are accumulating, the liars are falling all over themselves, Leahy's sharpening his knives, and looking for blood. I want a front-row seat for that show - it's long overdue.
Total Disarray wrote on March 13, 2007 12:57 PM:To remind everyone that requiring the Attorney General to testify truthfully under oath to Congress demoralizes our troops and plays into the hands of the al Qaeda types.

EH wrote on March 13, 2007 1:00 PM:I have a feeling we are about to learn what this administration considers to be sacrifice. I doubt he's going to resign, unless there would be a legal benefit to doing so, and I imagine Bush would be headed back from wherever he's escaped to if it were so.
If he's not resigning, he's got to mention Sampson somehow though, doesn't he? I wonder how he'll spin it.
jawbone wrote on March 13, 2007 1:01 PM:he will say that he cannot comment on an ongoing investigation.

Then he will announce that the younbg man already 30 years old will be coming to the DOJ to work for him as an Executive Assistant. You heard it here first.
Mr. Larry wrote on March 13, 2007 1:50 PM:This gets better and better. (or worser and worswer) The DOJ/USAO has been sliding downhill for a long time. Meese's pieces wanted litmus tests for USA's, and AUSA's; GHW Bush replaced competence with political hacks; WJC fired all of the USA's save a four or five with powerful Senator friends and then signed on a bunch of amateurs; and now, this.

Can we start calling him Attorney General Alberto "I know nothing! NOTHING!" Gonzalez?
FerretChick wrote on March 13, 2007 2:25 PM:"I take full responsibility" so why is he still talking?
quinn wrote on March 13, 2007 2:29 PM:great, "we have 110,000 employees....." we are talking about his own chief of staff, not someone far removed from him. What kind of moron is Gonzales to trot that line out there multiple times??!!
RandyH wrote on March 13, 2007 2:31 PM:Abu "I take full responsibilty" Gonzales seems to be indicating that it must have been some "low-level bad apples." He'll be investigating it himself. Nothing to see here. Move along, people.
