Stimulus Hypocrite Gov. Bob McDonnell Now Wants The Federal Government To Give Virginia More Money

Gov. Bob McDonnell (R-VA) During his gubernatorial campaign, Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell (R-VA) repeatedly criticized the Recovery Act, saying that although it was “massive,” he didn’t think it would “have a stimulus effect.” From the Virginian-Pilot in 2009:

Republican Bob McDonnell is the lone critic [of the stimulus], saying “This bill contains significant categories of spending that may do little to help the economy.

McDonnell has praised GOP congressional members who voted against the plan, saying the increased debt “is not going to be good long-term for America,” but he says he believes Virginia should collect its share of the stimulus anyway.

However, now that he’s in office and facing real budget challenges, he’s singing a different tune. On Monday, McDonnell proudly “announced that Virginia will receive a total of $24 million in federal funding to advance health information technology” — money made possible by the stimulus, which McDonnell conveniently failed to mention. McDonnell’s spokesman insisted that the previous governor, Democrat Tim Kaine, applied for the funds, but that didn’t stop McDonnell from touting them.

Yesterday, McDonnell went even further and asked for more stimulus dollars:

McDonnell said he would “support Congress extending the federal stimulus bill to help states cover rising health care costs, a potential infusion of funds that Virginia lawmakers hope will help close a more than $4 billion budget shortfall.” He added that because Medicaid costs have “just grown so fast, until we have some federal health care reform that really addresses cost, if the federal government is willing to help us for a short period of time, that would be fine.”

– In a meeting at the U.S. Capitol, McDonnell urged the state’s congressional delegation to “help him secure stimulus funds to help build a Rolls Royce manufacturing plant in Prince George County.”

Apparently, McDonnell has concluded that the stimulus is now able “to help the economy.”

If he voted against it, he should get nothing. Time to play hard ball. Let his constituents vote him out because he won’t bring home the cash. It’s time to start calling out these SOBs who want it both ways. They are hypocrits, plain and simple.

Republicans are so misunderstood! They’re not against spending taxpayers’ money in general. They’re just against taxing the people who can afford it. Spending tax money is okay, collecting it from Republicans is not okay.
All that Old McDonnell is doing is to ask for more money from people who can’t afford it.

OT but on topic of Virginia and Gov. Bob McDonnell (R-VA)

Maddow: Christian ignorance revives discrimination in Virginia
By David Edwards and Sahil Kapur
    Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

MSNBC host Rachel Maddow on Monday assailed a series of recent moves in Virginia under new Gov. Bob McDonnell, citing the rising influence of the Christian right in exacerbating “discrimination” against gays and women.

Maddow was dumbstruck by state legislator Bob Marshall (R-Manassas), who declared Monday that children born with disabilities are God’s “vengeance” for abortion, quoting scripture to make his case.

“The number of children who are born subsequent to a first abortion with handicaps has increased dramatically. Why? Because when you abort the first born of any, nature takes its vengeance on the subsequent children,” Marshall said, according to the Capital News Service.

A speechless Maddow noted that Marshall stood by his remarks when contacted by her producers. “This is the argument he’s using as an elected official to…cut off any state support for Planned Parenthood,” she said.

Princeton professor Melissa Harris-Lacewell, who grew up in Virginia, called it a “stunning” and “frightening” statement by a lawmaker whose goal is to undermine women’s rights, and who doesn’t really understand Christian literature.

It’s gotten to the point where the GOP’s hypocricy…well it’s still kinda funny but it’s starting to get bland. Lies and hypocrisy comes with being a politician. But the GOP has it down to a science.

  20. fritzthecat says:

He’s a moron. He ran as the “Jobs Governor” and as soon as he took office he cut funding to several programs that will cut jobs – lots of jobs. He’s closing state parks but re-opening all the rest stops in Virginia. So, rather than keep the rest stops closed so people have to go to local business (and usually buy something to use the facilities), he’s re-opening these stops that are a financial drain on the state budget. In his defense, he stated that closed rest stops sent the “wrong message” to those coming to Virginia. So I guess his message is, “Welcome To Virginia, Enjoy Your Pee.”
