Fay Vincent Opposes Reds' Pete Rose Tribute, Says That Rules Are Rules Are Rules Are Etc.

During Fay Vincent's tenure as baseball commissioner, he upheld the lifetime banishment of Pete Rose from baseball and oversaw his investigation. His stance on Rose hasn't softened over the years, and when the learned of the Reds' plan to honor the 25th anniversary of Rose's breaking of the all-time hits record, he had this to say:

" 'When the keeper of the Rules does not enforce the Rules, there are no Rules,' " Vincent wrote in an e-mail to The Post. "That was the quote from [Rose investigator] John Dowd when we discussed what Bud had done. John is correct.

Fair point; although the capitalization of "rules" creeps me out, this is a violation of the rules set forth by baseball. Selig ought to at least stick his neck out enough to amend the conditions of Rose's banning if he's going to allow this to happen. Oh, but wait, here's the best part:

Media Members Making News: Jason Whitlock's Teary 'Explanation,' Jay Mariotti Arrested

Once upon a time, the journalist ideal was that the folks reporting the news would stay out of the news, right? Jason Whitlock and Jay Mariotti haven't done that this weekend.

Whitlock's long-winded "Explanation" of his departure from the Kansas City Star live on radio on Friday was, at times, moving, petty, sad, and bizarre, and thoroughly transfixed Twitter, as the lightning rod-like columnist took his lumps, told his story, and shed some tears. Mariotti, reportedly arrested early Saturday morning on what a source told the Los Angeles Times was a felony charge related to a domestic disturbance, will likely be a target for scorn.

But both writers' actions demonstrate again that neither is above making news that puts their name in a headline instead of a byline.

If The The BYU-MWC Fiasco Took Place Entirely On Facebook...

It might go a little something like what Utah blog Block U concocted over at their site

Actually, their humorous take on the the whole situation actually goes back to the original conference realignment shenangians when Utah left for the Pac-10.

Everyone seems OMG-level concerned, except for UNLV who only seems concerned with hookers and booze. As you might expect.

IS PAC-10 EXPANSION UNRAVELING? (No, Not Really)

Glenn Dickey, who writes for The Examiner in San Francisco, wants to alert you that Pac-10 expansion is "not set in stone." Break out the realignment alarms! Chaos is coming!

Why? Because Chuck Young, a former chancellor at UCLA, is opposed to the move. This could ruin everything.

He has been sending e-mails to the chancellors and presidents of Pac-10 schools, urging them to block the expansion. He has promised not to make the content of the e-mails public (though ESPN has failed to do that) but he agreed to talk to me about his opposition.

Jenn Brown To Endorse Icehouse. Two Please, Bartender.

Jenn Brown of ESPN will be the official spokesperson of Icehouse Beer, according to press releases thrown into your inbox like they're actually news that anyone cares about at all.

Some people do think this might be news, if only because Brown is a college football sideline reporter, and college athletics as a whole tends to frown on alcohol being mentioned at all in association with their sport. Though not expressly forbidden, there is a gentlemen's agreement between schools that alcohol is not sold in stadiums and that alcohol advertising will not be sold inside stadiums themselves. Clearly this has kept college students from drinking alcohol at all, and is a successful policy worth continuing and extending to the media professionals covering the sport.

VIDEO: Nenad Krstic Throws Chair During Greece-Serbia Fight

I've watched way more of Nenad Krstic's NBA games than I'm proud to admit, and I always figured him as a gentle giant. He's known for his jump shot, not his ability to mix it up inside. I guess what I'm trying to say is that he's one of the last players I'd expect to throw a chair at someone.

Except, that's exactly what he did. A huge fight broke out during an exhibition game between Greece and Serbia, and it ended with Krstic winding up and pegging Sofoklis Schortsanitis with a chair.
