John Aravosis Just to moved to another friend's place in Paris for a few days, while he and the roomie are away on vacation. It's simply lovely. And, oh yeah, it has a full-blown pinball machine.

John Aravosis I mocked Serge & Clément for worrying that we would "prendre froid" after leaving the club Sat. night soaking wet with sweat. I suspect the European concept of prendre froid (to take cold) is the origin of my European-born mom's favorite fret when we were young, that we would "catch cold" by going outside underdressed.... Of course, I woke up Sun. morning with a cough that is now turning into a congested chest.

John Aravosis Just a lovely picnic place that every Parisian is already fully aware of. Some of the photos are HDR photos, thus the weirdness (I like to merge photos together that, taken consecutively, show movement.

John Aravosis Paris picnic. In Paris, picnics tend to happen at night. 7 or 8ish, but best around sunset. It never struck me as odd until my friend Matt mentioned it, then I went, oh yeah. A French friend thought I said that this particular picnic was at 5pm, and he was shocked - no one picnics at 5pm! But 7 is just right :) You... can find the main page for the photos here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/jga/sets/72157624658470687/

John Aravosis The guy on the street has an umbrella because it's raining. It's one of those clear see through kind, that comes down low to your shoulders, like a bubble. Both the shoes and the umbrella are totally gay, as we'd say in the midwest. And neither guy could care, and nobody is noticing them. It's funny the difference. I w...ouldn't be caught dead in either in the states.

John Aravosis So I see two guys today. One on the metro, one on the street. The metro guy is youngish, wearing gym shoes, and the gym shoes have a big pink patch on them as part of the design.

John Aravosis It is a scandal, the degree to which the French have let the Parisian Metro degrade into one massive piece of stinking graffiti. It's everywhere. On the worst lines, on the best lines. There's no excuse. And it's been this way for several years. It's on the windows of every train, on the doors, the sides of the car, in...side and out. It's even on the walls of the subway tunnels. It's everywhere. In NYC they put a stop to it by immediately cleaning it up every time. Someone in power has let this happen to what was once a source of pride for Paris and France. Now it's a national disgrace. Where is the outrage?

John Aravosis Crazy French idea of the day. Rather than putting "hypoallergenic perfume" in "hypoallergenic" laundry detergent, what about giving it no scent at all?

      • John Aravosis At home in Dc I do the same. Very hard here in france to find any product that doesn't contain perfume. I have a hard time believing there wouldn't be a market for it, what with the interest in green products etc.
