NY Times: Consumers Want Elizabeth Warren!

I'm catching up on things I missed, and found this article from last Friday on Elizabeth Warren in the New York Times. Actually, it's not so much about Warren as it is about the pressure on the White House to appoint her, which is as it should be.

What struck me, when I reread that article recently, was the bluntness of her language. She used words like “tricks,” “fleece,” and “bribe” to describe the actions of mortgage and credit card lenders. And I think a lot of her appeal stems from that simple fact: she describes abuses — predatory lending, hidden fees, bewildering “disclosures” that hide more than they disclose — in precisely the way most Americans have experienced them. She conveys a powerful sense that she understands what we’ve been through this last decade.

If nothing else, it stands in stark contrast to Christopher Dodd's silly and unnecessary opposition.

She scares the stuffing out of enough on both sides for me to want her in that slot - a bunch!

Scrooo Dodd - he is a has been.

Agreed on both counts. The fact that Ms. Warren has them worked into a lather makes me believe that she's the perfect person for the job.

Dodd's actions are as transparent as they are inexcusable. I'm afraid any goodwill I've had for the Senator has completely evaporated due to his constant toadying for Wall Street.

pretty obvious that the white house has little interest in what "the little people" think, want or desire, it's all about pleasing the republicans. with that as a given, we'll not be seeing dr. warren in that position, ever.

I hope you're wrong on this. Warren seems like the logical choice. I don't see what the President has to lose. Big business types like Mort Zuckerman are going on every channel already slamming Obama as anti business because of one quote taken out of context. Anyone paying atttention can see that big business has gotten its way more often than not. Picking a strong consumer advocate for like Warren is a fight worth having.

I just thought of the "one term president" talk as hyperbole. If he doesn't appoint Warren and disband the Cat Food commission, he's done.

However, I'd prefer his exit take place prior to the start of the 2012 primaries, since there is nothing good that can come of his simply losing to some Right Wing lunatic.

I had few illusions about Obama by election day 2008, but even so he has gone on to both disappoint and disgust me on a fairly regular basis. His problem is not his legislative record, which by normal Washington standards is quite good. Rather his problem seems to be that he refuses to lead either the Democratic Party or the country away from the conservative failings of the past. I will be shocked if he chooses Warren -- she is precisely the kind of appointee Obama has steered clear of at every turn. Obama is a weak (nonexistent?) voice for liberal or progressive solutions to the nation's deep and worsening problems. No amount of past failure will convince Obama that we need a clean (and total) break from the right wing idiocy of the last 30 years. Even in education Obama is a supporter of much of the Right's agenda. Is it possible that someone we thought was so intelligent is actually so dumb that he thinks a good dose of Right Wing demagoguery will cure Social Security? Why then appoint Alan Simpson to the Cat Food Commission?

If the choice in 2010 comes down to one between Obama and the Right Wing lunatic we can reasonably expect, it will be a simple matter to NOT vote for the Winger, but a much more difficult task to fill in the Obama box. I've had enough of his style of presidency.

Not only is she good at what she does, she speaks in a language all of us can understand. There is no sugar coating on her language. I love listening to her and I always learn something.

Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.

a more qualified or more respected candidate. It's certainly not controversial. What the hell? Did she slap down Dodd's unwelcome advances and hurt his feelings?

Ben Bernake said today:

... the exit from recession was driven primarily by fiscal and monetary stimulus measures and inventory rebuilding by businesses, a "hand-off" to consumer demand appeared to be under way.

Which seems to be catching on:

"What we're seeing is that the hand-off to the private sector is not looking as robust as we had previously hoped," said Ben Herzon, an economist at Macroeconomic Advisors.

I'm sure it's just a coinkidink.

If your president does NOT appoint Mrs. Warren and continues with the cat food commission, you in the USA had better be damned sure he does not run for a second term.

I give you--Elizabeth Warren. Born in Oklahoma.

She's a fine example of a no-nonsense person who is on the side of the people. I just hope we can get her in there where she can do some good. It's about damn time.

therefore she does not stand a chance in hell of getting it because corporations run America.

...on the Cat Food Commission is not likely to be comfortable with Warren.

I continue to hope (beyond hope) that Obama will shock me and choose Warren, but I don't believe it will happen. I don't believe any Democratic president in my lifetime (starting with Kennedy, say) has such a pathetic record of appointments. Is there even a single instance of Obama opting for a strong liberal or progressive voice in a position of major importance? I don't think so.

I think Alan Simpson is doing a wonderful job. He is discrediting the right wing's position on changing SS just about every time he opens his mouth or writes a word. I have a great deal of respect for people who take an opposing view:people like Nicole and Karoli and Digby. Nevertheless I think they are dead wrong on this issue. Any serious attempt to get rid of Simpson will be inevitably framed , and not just by Fox News, as a plan to purge the GOP's ideas on SS reform. It is infinitely better to allow people like Simpson to keep going on the public record and demonstrating that they have no ideas worthy of consideration. I also think Warren is the ideal choice to look out for the interests of consumers.
