The Hill to 'Liquid Launch' Allen Into Next Job

We've already reported that The Hill's Jared Allen is leaving the publication for a job in PR as Asst. VP at FD. Here are the internal memos - one, a goodbye note from Allen and another, an announcement from Editor Hugo Gurdon.

A goodbye soiree for Allen is set for next week.
We wish him all the best.

Here's Gurdon's memo:

"I just wanted to remind you that today is Jared's last day here. I'm sure everyone at The Hill wishes him well. Please join him at the Post Pub next [week] after work for a liquid launch of his new career in public relations."

MSNBC's 'The Week Ahead' in its Full Glory

After nearly a month off, NBC Producer Andy Gross is back and badder than ever with MSNBC's Domenico Montanaro and "The Week Ahead."

Among the topics: Hurricane Katrina, political primaries in Louisiana (how will Sen. David Vitter's (R-La.) cheating scandal affect his campaign?) and more...

Things are about to take a turn. Domenico's off next week. Which means, ahem, Andy's in charge. Domenico seems a bit frightened, but Andy is full of confidence.

Bret Baier's With Roger Ailes: Major Garrett Never Got Addicted to TV

baier.jpeg WMAL's "Grandy Group Show" featured FNC's anchor of "Special Report" Bret Baier on the show today. Baier spoke on a variety of topics, including why Major Garrett left FNC for National Journal.

Baier remarked:

"I think Major has always had in his mind that he wanted to do long form print again. I've talked to him since and, you know, he's excited to spend more time with his three kids. Listen, I've been the chief White House correspondent and it gets tiring. I think Major has tremendous stamina but I think he really longed for long-form thoughtful pieces. He's written books. He's written articles. He wanted to go back into that form. National Journal is investing in Washington. He feels comfortable there. We're sad to see him go."

On Fox News being in the front row of the White House Briefing Room...

"We will still be in the front row. Major Garrett or not. ...If he wants to come on TV, something tells me that he'll be doing stories and [will be] back as an analyst or panelist. Roger Ailes said it best. Major said he talked to our big boss Roger Ailes and Roger said, 'You know, you were never one of the ones that got addicted to TV.' I think he's right. I wish Major the best."

Fishbowl's Finest: Shashank Bengali

Photobucket

Photobucket

Perhaps we've saved best for last in McLatchy's Shashank Bengali, our final beauty in Fishbowl's Finest for the week. The exotic-looking Bengali has a single beauty tip: "Moving to DC!" he jokes. "I feel most attractive when it's not 100 degrees."

Bengali grew up in Cerritos, Calif., a suburb of L.A. His parents were both born in India. His first name translates to "part of the moon."

He's a worldly guy. He was McClatchy's correspondent in sub-Saharan Africa from 2005-2009, and moved from Nairobi, Kenya to Washington in January.

He was "very embarrassed" about being on this list, but graciously agreed to answer our questions. Asked to name his favorite and least favorite features (on himself) Bengali writes the following: "Steven Strasburg's arm and Jon Stewart's goatee." His celebrity crush is Top Chef Judge and food critic Padma Lakshmi. Other random details: He's 5'7", approximately 140 pounds (he suspects) - and single.

The FishbowlDC Interview With The Frenchman, Tangi Quemener

fishhead.jpg
Tangi.jpg Say hello to Tangi Quemener, White House correspondent for Agence France-Presse. Quemener hails from Brest, France (that's right, that's the name of the north-western French town in Brittany where he grew up). He studied journalism in Paris. He has been working for Agence France-Presse since 1999 - he worked on the international desk in Paris, on the Middle East desk in Cyprus and as a West Coast correspondent in L.A.

Quemener was a delight to chat with by phone from Martha's Vineyard Thursday afternoon, where he's covering President Obama's summer vacation. He does not appear to fall under any stereotypical French attributes. He's self-deprecating and self-conscious about his English and respectful of his American colleagues in the White House Press Corps. "I'm the newcomer," he says, explaining that the wire service assigned him to the White House beat in December. He told me, "My English is far from perfect, so please feel free to correct any spelling or grammar horror that might have gone undetected."

He does not refer to French Fries as Freedom Fries. "The French Fries are not really French," he says. "They are from Belgium." But he isn't taken aback by the ongoing jokes against the French. "The French are not easily offended," he says. Oh, and the photograph? His choice. He wanted to be an international man of mystery, and I'm not one to argue with a Frenchman.

If you were a carbonated beverage which would you be? Full Sail beer from Hood River, Oregon. Or Diet Coke, the White House Correspondent's drug of choice.

How often do you Google yourself? Once a month. But I confess that I check my byline on the AFP wire more often than that.

What's the worst thing you've ever said to an editor (or vice versa)? You just made me realize how lucky I've been so far. I really can't remember any serious rift with my gentle and beloved brass. I've never fallen [in with] a prick editor. Blame it on the 35 hour workweek, the 61 day a year paid vacation or even our amazing health care system. That's the French way but we work a lot. Every American worker is green with angry or red with rage.

Who is your favorite working journalist? Gail Collins makes my Metro ride a bliss. I have a great deal of respect for my AFP colleagues working in war or disaster zones. But my all time favorite journo is Frenchman Joseph Kessel (1898-1979), a real adventurer and a master wordsmith.

Do you have a favorite word? Two: Ice cream.

Who would you rather have dinner with - First Lady Michelle Obama or Bestselling Author and former V.P. candidate Sarah Palin? Sarah Palin would give me a hard time as I'm French, thus a cheese monkey girlie man cowardly palling around with communist treehuggers. But I'd rather have a charbroiled moose burger than sauteed broccoli. Decisions, decisions.

What's the name of your cell phone ring? My cell is in vibrating mode only. Robert Gibbs doesn't like interference when he's briefing.

When did you last cry and why? I shed a tear this summer after receiving a pic of my young sons that my wife e-mailed from their long French vacation. Corny but true.

What word do you routinely misspell? This summer, its has been "flottille." It's flotilla in French.

What swear word do you use most often? "Bordel de merde." Need a translation?

What word or phrase do you overuse? In English, "Basically." Must be unnerving to others but can't help it.

What TV show do you have to watch? BBC's "Top Gear." I'm a car freak.
Plus it's hilarious and beautifully shot.

Where do you shop most often for your clothes? I usually go on a rampage every year in a shopping outlet like in Delaware or Virginia. You must know [NPR's} Ari Shapiro. He's always very well dressed. I'm not like that at all.

Who do you prefer for daytime talk, Dr. Phil, Ellen, Oprah, Tyra or the women of The View? I have to monitor cable news all day but I'd rather watch Ellen, who has a great sense of humor. The others actually scare me. I'm really scared of Oprah, the way she hands over gifts and cars, maybe she's too powerful, and Dr. Phil is even worse.

Pick one: Leno, Letterman or Conan? None of the above, really. I'm more of a Jon Stewart or Stephen Colbert aficionado.

If you were trapped on a deserted island, which public official would you want to be trapped with and why? Thad Allen seems to have a few boats handy. And his mustache is has soothing powers.

Find out what Quemener's first journalism teacher wrote about him after the jump...

POTUS in Mom Jeans?

THE DEEP END...TIPS FROM THE POOL

Oh man, say it isn't so.

WSJ's Elizabeth Williamson notes in a White House Pool Report sent within the hour that the grey jeans that POTUS is wearing on a six-mile bike ride through a state forest loop on Martha's Vineyard are rather "mom-like."

Sasha came first in white top and brown shorts followed closely by flotus in grey sleeveless top and white cropped pants. After a short break came potus in white shirt and his grey jeans looked to your pooler rather mom-like. He was smiling and laughing, said "hi guys" to pool. Next was Malia, also laughing, in blue sleeveless top and shorts. All four in the family wore helmets, unlike last year when potus did not wear a helmet.

Examiner Column Goofs Up Entire Premise

Rogerson-All_Goofed_Up-24x19-G.jpg
A question we should all ask ourselves: WWGD?
(What would Goofy do?)

In a column published Thursday afternoon about journalists not getting their facts right and "sifting facts from fiction," Washington Examiner Editorial Page Editor Mark Tapscott completely goofs on who wrote the WaPo piece on the impending sale of TWT. It wasn't WaPo media columnist Howard Kurtz who wrote about the rumored reporting process of the TWT sale, it was WaPo's Ian Shapira for the "Story Lab" feature.

Tapscott links to Shapira's story, while saying it was by Kurtz. He also refers to "Kurtz's last sentence" and mentions the word "stupid." The sentence is, in fact, Shapira's last sentence.

"But Kurtz' last sentence points to the key point missed by so many conventional journalists - growing legions of readers would indeed prefer to see the "raw material at first blush" because they long ago stopped trusting what they get from "news organizations that make the calls and do the checks before publishing." Or to put it in a more Clintonian fashion, it's the transparency, stupid.

Fishbowl's Finest: Kaylee Hartung

Photobucket

Photobucket

It's the final day of Fishbowl's Finest...we know, you're devastated. But don't worry, we have plenty more lametastic lists and fishy features up our sleeve. Until then, we give you the last day's picks and we think you'll agree, Kaylee Hartung is really, really ridiculously good looking. At 5'2" this pint-sized beauty is the shortest of our bunch - but really, doesn't that make her good looks all the more potent?

As Bob Schieffer's right hand woman and a CBS News/CBS College Sports reporter, we figured Kaylee has probably bumped into her fair share of celebrities so we asked about her celeb crush. She replied, "Ask Bob, he's embarrassed me in front of both of them."

Hartung tells us if she had a beauty secret, she wouldn't share it but her advice for a pulled-together appearance is to "find a hair stylist and a tailor you trust and heels you can walk, run and dance in." Her favorite feature? "A year round tan." Least favorite? "I'm 5'2"."

Oh, and men of Washington rejoice - Kaylee is single!

major.jpg

Comedy Central's Stephen Colbert leads off his Thursday night show with the announcement that Major Garrett is leaving Fox News for National Journal.

"Nation, it's a tough job market out there, that is why I always like to keep your abreast of the latest job openings...," Colbert began at the top of the show. "Fox News White House correspondent and David Gregory on horse testosterone Major Garrett has announced that he is leaving the network. Now according to Garrett he is leaving Fox News for the National Journal because he wants to talk less and think more. So if you're a reporter who likes to talk but does not like to think, Fox News is hiring."

White House Soup of the Day

As reported by MSNBC's "The Daily Rundown," host Chuck Todd informs that the White House Soup of the Day is: Corn and Crab chowder.

As usual, he slams the soup, saying it lacks diversity, implying that the Friday soup has been this choice before. "I guess you feel like well, you're not going to diversify things for [Regional Comm Director] Amy Brundage, [White House Press Secretary] Robert Gibbs is working there today...you think you'd step it up and see what he wants today?"
